To assist Town of Oyster Bay renters facing economic hardships, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced the availability of $16 million in Federal funds for those facing housing insecurity as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although this rental assistance program is being administered by the Long Island Housing Partnership (LIHP), qualifying residents can now register at www. oysterbaytown.com/ rentalassistance. After registration, the LIHP will contact applicants to obtain documentation and information necessary to secure these funds. June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month; learn about the Long Island Alzheimer’s and Dementia Center and the work they do! For over 30 years the Long Island Alzheimer’s & Dementia (LIAD) Center has served as a lifeline to diagnosed individuals and their

families throughout Long Island. Their mission is to help improve the quality of life for diagnosed individuals and caregivers living with Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias. The LIAD Center takes considerable pride in its pioneering role in the development of cutting-edge services that foster the independence, dignity well-being and safety of individuals with dementia, thus aiding in the prevention of premature nursing home placement. Their caring professionals help program participants maximize their remaining abilities, while providing much-needed information, support and respite to family caregivers. They are committed to the belief that there is life worth living after a diagnosis. Their services include: • Stage-Specific Day Programs: Monday – Saturday, 10AM-3PM, lunch included. • Virtual Activities • In-Home Respite: Home visits that relieve caregivers and engage with diagnosed individuals. • Day Program Transportation:

General Taxes Due Prior to August 10th to Avoid Paying Penalties Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents that the Second Half of the 2021 General Tax Levy is due and payable July 1st, but can be paid without penalty through August 10th. “New York State laws allows my office to provide taxpayers with a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” said Receiver Pravato. “After the 40 days, State Law requires a one percent penalty be added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to July 1st. So make your payment before August 10th and don’t delay, and you will ensure you aren’t paying more out of pocket than you need to!” Please be certain to sign your check, payable

AMES CLUBS CHALK THE WALK WITH POSITIVITY - Students from the Chiefs Challenge and Active Minds clubs at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus recently joined forces to bring some inspiration to their classmates. The colorful chalk messages were written adjacent to the bus loop, so students read them as they arrived at school on last day of classes. The Chiefs Challenge club focuses its efforts on improving school culture, including tolerance and respect, while the Active Minds club helps students gain awareness and understanding of the impact of mental health. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Oyster Bay Town Board recently honored Sal Cirisano, Plainedge High School Junior and one of only 22 students nationwide to win the NFL “Way to Play” Award, which recognizes players who demonstrate exceptional in-game technique. The

NFL established this award in 2019 to help educate youth football players at the grassroots level on how to play the game ‘the correct way’ with an emphasis on technique and the fundamentals. Sal was honored by the NFL “Way to Play” High School Award panel for his play at the tight end position,

and noted that they were especially impressed with his footwork, pad level, and block sustainability. Supervisor Saladino and the Oyster Bay Town Board commended Sal for his amazing achievement and tireless work ethic, and presented him with a Town citation to commemorate this amazing moment.

Few summertime holidays elicit as much excitement as the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day in the United States. Each year, family, friends and revelers anticipate the arrival of the holiday so they can host barbecues, enjoy the sun, listen to their favorite summertime tunes, and commemorate the freedoms afforded by the monumental events that led to the holiday’s establishment. Independence Day became a federal holiday in 1941, but July 4th has stood as the birth of American independence for much longer. July 4th marks a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. According to PBS, the colonies were forced to pay taxes to England’s King George III despite having no representation in the British Parliament. “Taxation without representation” became a battle cry and was one of several grievances colonists had with Great Britain. Conflict between the colonies had been going on for at least a

year before the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia in June of 1776, says Military.com. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence from England. Two days later, on July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence is an historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer of the declaration writing committee charged with putting the colonies’ sentiments into words. Richard Henry Lee of Virginia was one of the first people to present a resolution for American independence, and his commentary was the impetus for the formal Declaration of Independence. A total of 86 changes were made to Jefferson’s original draft until the final version was adopted. The signing of the document helped to solidify independence, and eventually lead to the

formation of the United States of America. A total of 56 delegates signed the document. Although John Hancock’s signature is the largest, it did not hold more weight than the other signatures. Rather, rumor has it, Hancock signed it so large so that the “fat, old King could read it without his spectacles.” However, the National Archives says it was also customary that, since Hancock was the president of the Continental Congress, he be the first person to sign the document centered below the text. The Pennsylvania Evening Post was the first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence on July 6, 1776. The first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia’s Independence Square on July 8, 1776. We hope everyone enjoys the Fourth of July. Let us embrace our country’s history, enjoy our freedoms and unite over the love of our country.

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! Anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at this farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. You will find organically grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and their mission. The farm is proud to continue operating, however it is in need of some repairs, such as plumbing assistance, fountain repair and roofing work. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate their time and skills to assist in any of these projects, it would be such a blessing to their farm. Musician Is Cellist And Composer Students in the Massapequa High School orchestra regularly play music by famous composers, but it’s rare for them to perform a piece written by one of their peers. That was the case this year, as they learned a composition by senior Adriana Kamor, who started writing original music in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Adriana said that composing was her way of staying connected to music when schools closed down in March 2020. She used a program called Note Flight, which was recommended by her teacher, Marjorie Spagnuolo, to create new arrangements of pop songs she likes. Soon after, Adriana began crafting original pieces. She has three compositions in the process of being copyrighted. “Chaos and Calamity” is a full orchestral piece, “Last Attacker” is a cello duet

and “Sunrise After Sunset” is for a quartet. All three pieces, she said, reflect her emotions going through pandemic, and each have a different tempo and tone. The high school orchestra began learning “Chaos and Calamity” in December. After several rehearsals, the roughly 90-student ensemble performed it in the auditorium for a professional recording, with Adriana conducting. The orchestra played it again at the senior awards ceremony. Adriana said that creating music on computer software produces a digitized version of the song, so the first time she heard her classmates play the 2 minute, 10 second song live was an amazing experience and really brought her creation to life. “I was really excited to have a full orchestra,” she said. “It felt surreal. I was really ecstatic that everyone was into the piece and put

in their full effort.” Adriana, who plays the cello, got her start in fourth grade at Unqua Elementary School. She said she decided to join the orchestra because she felt drawn to string instruments and the wide range of sounds that they produce. Adriana credits her elementary orchestra teacher, Alison Pearl, with guiding her to the cello. Since then, she has learned under the tutelage of Katherine Cahalan, Jeremy Einhart and Ms. Spagnuolo, and is grateful for the opportunities she has had to grow as a musician in Massapequa. Outside of school, Adriana has played with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. In college, she will study computer science at Case Western Reserve University, but still wants to find a way to keep music in her life because that is her creative outlet.

On Friday, July 2nd at 4:30 p.m., as part of the Three Village Farmers Market, the Three Village Historical Society (TVHS) will lead a fun, family friendly, interactive presentation on the United States Flag Code, led by former Regent of the Anna Smith Strong Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution and current Trustee of the TVHS Board Holly Brainard. will also collect any torn or tattered flags to properly dispose of (according to the US Flag Code) at a later date.
