Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services organization that has been around for 93 years. It transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental disabilities across New York City and Long Island. Little Flower prides itself on adapting and innovating to address the unmet needs of those in its community by enhancing current programs and services or developing new ones. They have been able to do that by partnering with individuals, businesses and community partners through special events like their Annual Golf Outing! This year they will celebrate their 25th Annual Golf Outing on September 12, 2022 at Engineers Country Club in Roslyn. Guests in attendance will enjoy a day of golf, breakfast, BBQ lunch, a cocktail and networking hour, along with an inspiring program. Little Flower will honor the past and promise for the future with honoree Grace Lo Grande, former Little Flower Executive Director, and special guests, such as former foster youth, now Little Flower Board member, Bianca Buckridee. Grace served the organization for 19 years, seeing it through growth and transformation, witnessing firsthand the tremendous impact made by Little Flower’s essential staff on thousands of children, families and people with developmental or intellectual disabilities. Bianca has the unique experience of Little Flower through the client lens, having received services as a child in foster care. She credits the social workers who worked with her as a young adult with helping her see past foster care and her potential for the future. She has supported the organization over the years and recently was elected a member of their Board of Directors.

The Support Squad is a monthly giving program, where donors will receive a special “thank you” piece of art made from the youth they serve.

Classic Country Comes To Massapequa Park The classic country music of the 1920s through the 1950s—the music of Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, the Carter Family, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and more—will be coming to the Massapequa Public Library on Saturday, July 2, at 2 p.m. Tennessee Walt’s The Other Great American Songbook is a one-man concert featuring two
dozen songs from country’s greatest songwriters, the likes of Kris Kristofferson, Ernest Tubb, Loretta Lynn and Hank Williams, arranged for voice and piano. It’s also an intriguing, fact-filled look into what has made country music (and its most prominent descendant, rock ‘n’ roll) popular throughout America and beyond. “Think of it as a cabaret show, except that, instead of
voice-and-piano versions of Tin Pan Alley songs from the 1920s through 1950s, these are Music Row songs of the same period,” said Gayden Wren, the musical-theater veteran who performs as Tennessee Walt. “From those two streets have come the lion’s share of America’s greatest songs. Both streets were originally dedicated to pop music, music made for a buck, but in the past 20
or 30 years we’ve come to realize the classical aspects of the songs of Jerome Kern, George Gershwin and Rodgers & Hart. I think it’s time we recognized that there’s that same classical essence in the greatest country songs. “This isn’t what people may think of when they hear the words `country music,’” Wren said. “It’s voice and piano, not fiddles
and steel guitars, and I won’t be yodeling. And this isn’t the country of Toby Keith or Carrie Underwood—it’s the older, purer country music that inspired them and everybody from Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley to Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Ringo Starr. Anyone who comes to this show will learn some things they never knew about America’s musical heritage,

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Tom Hand and Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato partnered with Town resident Carmela Shimansky to host a Baby Formula Collection Drive at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa on Sunday, May 22nd. Dozens of residents donated unexpired, unused formula – which was then distributed to families who are experiencing difficulty in finding formula as the nationwide storage continues. “The nationwide baby formula shortage is causing a crisis for many families and leaving many to panic as store shelves are often empty,” said Supervisor
Saladino. “We all know that once little ones move onto food, families are often left with extra formula in their pantries. We ask that you open your hearts and cupboards by donating unexpired, unused formula to his organization so that families facing shortages are able to provide for their newborns.” At the start of the pandemic, Massapequa resident Carmela Shimansky launched a Facebook page ‘One Parent to Another,’ to help mothers in need of baby formula and other childcare necessities. Working with neighbors and friends in the community, Carmela connected with local moms
who had items they no longer needed and asked them to pay it forward by donating them to others. Town Announces American Spirit Home Decorating Contest For Independence Day Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier invite residents to express their patriotism and the American Spirit in advance of Independence Day by decorating their homes in red, white and blue with lights, flags or other decorations through July 15th. “This contest unites our communities through patriotism and love while supporting our local economy,” said
Supervisor Saladino. “Buying decorations from small businesses is also an important way for us to show our support of small businesses while celebrating our American spirit.” “As we continue to experience some trying times in our world, bringing back our patriotic spirit can help unite us as Americans,” said Councilwoman Maier. “We hope our residents will join us in decorating their homes as America celebrates
its independence.” The Town will illuminate Town Hall in red, white and blue. Residents are encouraged to submit photographs of their decorated homes to the Town by emailing photos@ oysterbay-ny.gov. Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier announced that all Town pools are open for the season. The Town of Oyster Bay operates five pool facilities, including Bethpage Community Park, Marjorie Post Community Park, Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park, SyossetWoodbury Community Park, and a saltwater pool at Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing. Pool hours through Labor Day, Monday, September 5th will be 11am to 7pm daily, weather permitting.
Additionally, extended hours until 8pm, will be offered as follows (weather permitting) at the following locations on the following schedule: Monday: Syosset-Woodbury Tuesday: Plainview-Old Bethpage Wednesday: Bethpage Thursday: Marjorie R. Post Fridays: ALL pools open late including Tappen Pool memberships can be obtained at each park location. Memberships are available at community park pools for both park district residents and non-park district
residents. Daily admission rates, nanny memberships and group access are also available. In addition to the great new amenities at our facilities, the Town is offering swimming lessons at local pools to members age five and older. Applications to register for swimming lessons will be available at each facility, with four swim lesson sessions available to choose from. The Town will also offer a swim team this summer at outdoor pools located in Syosset-Woodbury Community Park and Marjorie
R. Post Community Park in Massapequa. Town of Oyster Bay residents aged 6 to 16 are eligible to register for the swim program. Practices will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, from 9:30am to 10:30am. Swim meets will be held Saturday mornings and class meets will be held Tuesday afternoons. Town To Host Empire State Ride Long Island To End Cancer Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced a partnership with Empire State Ride Long Island to host a charity ride to raise funds to end cancer. The ride, which will take place on Saturday, July 23, features 3 different course lengths for riders of all ages and ability. All course routes begin at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, in Oyster Bay. “I am so proud that the Town of Oyster Bay will play host to such an amazing event. Empire State Ride Long Island is poised to make a tremendous difference in the lives of those touched by cancer, and it will be directly due to the actions of our amazing residents who sign up for this fundraising ride,” said Supervisor Saladino. “With two wheels, our residents can change the world. I look forward to seeing everyone on event
day, and I encourage any one of any age or riding ability to sign up for the event, as three course routes will be featured.” The Empire State Ride Long Island is a perfect, family-friendly summer event that features a ride through beautiful beaches, woodlands, and the historic destinations in and around the Town of Oyster Bay, all while helping cancer patients gain access to the newest clinical trials. This one-day bike ride event, held in partnership between the Town and Empire State Ride Long Island, will raise funds for clinical research and trials that will benefit cancer patients at Catholic Health on Long Island and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, the nation’s first cancer center in the United States dedicated exclusively to cancer research. “At Roswell Park, we believe that no one should
have to choose between convenience and quality when facing a decision about where they or a loved one should seek care for cancer,” says Roswell Park President and CEO Candace S. Johnson, PhD. “That’s why partnerships with health care facilities like Catholic Health and the funds raised through Empire State Ride Long Island are so critical to continue to provide the latest clinical trials and treatments to patients across New York State.” The event will feature 3 course lengths: a 10 mile route spanning the shoreline from Bayville to Centre Island (ideal for family and children), a 25 mile route featuring the scenic rolling hills from Bayville through Locust Valley, Glen Cove and Old Brookville (for more experienced riders) and a 62 mile route through Glen Cove, Sea Cliff, Roslyn Harbor, to Port Washington,
and then all the way to Teddy Roosevelt’s home at Sagamore Hill (for advanced cyclists). By participating in Empire State Ride Long Island, bicyclists will have an opportunity to make a real impact on cancer research and patient care through clinical trials at these locations. In 2021, over $100,000 was raised by nearly 250 riders. Registration is now open for this fundraising event with a $25 fee for each participant. Riders will commit to a fundraising minimum which is $200 for adults and $75 for riders under 18 for all routes. To kick start each rider’s efforts, their $25 registration fee will be credited to their fundraising page.
