Students Get Into Character
Why were Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein and Queen Elizabeth at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on June 13? Well, they weren’t, but second graders portrayed them and other famous individuals quite well at the annual living wax museum. A decade-long tradition at the school, parents were invited to come in and experience the gymnasium-
turned-museum, in which students stood still in their spots and didn’t talk until someone tapped them on the shoulder. They dressed up to resemble these famous figures, representing artists, authors, entertainers, inventors, scientists, world leaders and other notable individuals from the past and present. Second grade teacher Kelly Korrow said students selected three people they
would be interested in learning more about, before choosing one to research and portray at the wax museum. Each child created a fact card highlighting key points in the life of his or her person. Ms. Korrow said the goal was for students to learn more about different people who have made positive contributions to the world.

Black Hawk Pilot Visits Birch Lane Fourth graders got an exciting look into military aviation when Capt. Sal Garcia, a helicopter pilot in the National Guard, visited their classroom at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on June 11. Capt. Garcia, the
husband of their teacher, Valerie Garcia, pilots a Black Hawk helicopter. He presented a photo slideshow of the helicopter he flies and of his numerous humanitarian missions. Children got to try on some of the equipment he uses including a helmet,
gloves and vest. He also explained that the helicopters used by the National Guard are named after Native American tribes, a fact appreciated by students in Massapequa, a community itself steeped in Native American history.

The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org
New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties by dealing with it’s underlying causes, rather than merely treating symptoms. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! This organization provides a portfolio of programming delivered by professionals, so that a set of services is customized in a unique way for each Veteran and family they serve. This way they can solve all of the underlying causes of their situation at the same time. They truly believe that this is how you break the cycle of homelessness! Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. This week I would like to share yet another success story. Please note: The name of the individual mentioned in this story has been changed for confidentiality purposes. A Long Island resident, Tina, found New Ground when she was facing eviction from her apartment and had nowhere to go with her two young sons. She had fallen behind on rent because of a significant decrease in her paycheck and she did not have the means to pay off this debt or to afford a new apartment. She moved into the Long Term Housing Program with New Ground, where she paid an affordable rent based on her income and began to receive all the intensive social work and education services necessary to help her turn things around. While in the program, Tina paid off significant debts on her credit report, increased her score by over 200 points, created a savings and secured better paying stable employment. However, her real focus was education. She agreed with New Ground that the way out of her cycle of poverty was a higher degree to ensure greater
income. Tina juggled work, school and raising two boys along with many other life responsibilities during her years with New Ground. She attended an Associate Degree program part time and finished in three years. She then immediately started a Bachelor Degree program, which she completed in three years. Following each accomplishment, she secured better paying employment and used her extra earnings to reach her financial goals. Upon completing the New Ground program and moving into a market rent apartment, she continued her education plan. This May she graduated with her Master Degree in Social Work and this summer she will become a homeowner! Tina stated, “I feel awesome, I feel accomplished. It has been a long journey. I’m just happy and overwhelmed. I love working with people and there is a big need for people to care for other people now. It’s what New Ground did for me, helping me to get where I am. Now it’s my turn to help someone else.” As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available. You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. Making A Statement Ninth grade artists put a new twist on a common practice by using technology to create their artist statements, which analyze their successes and struggles this year. In preparation for the annual art show at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, students in Tildy Becker-DeLuca’s studio in art class recorded their statements, which will be accessible to anyone with a smartphone. Each student will have about a half-dozen pieces displayed at the art show on June 5. Typically, they would post their artist
statement with their work, but this year there will be a QR code instead. Guests can scan the code with their cell phone cameras and hear each student artist recite his or her statement. The students worked with technology learning coach Jarrett Fifield to record their statements. On their Chromebooks they used Vocaroo, an online voice recorder. Students could record as many times as they wanted until they were satisfied. Each artist received a unique QR code which linked to the recording,
and could also download it onto their computers. “This is a good tool for a project like this because it’s simple,” Mr. Fifield said. “Their need is pretty direct in providing a way for viewers of their art to hear their artist statements.” Ms. Becker-DeLuca said that as students prepared their artist statements, they were asked to consider several factors including their favorite and least favorite projects of the year, how they have grown as artists and their overall experiences in the class. Six Schools, One Special Concert
The All Elementary Music Festival is a 63-year tradition in the Massapequa School District and 289 student musicians from all corners of the community showcased their talents on May 20. Music teachers from the six elementary schools selected their top fourth and fifth grade musicians for the band, chorus and orchestra. They performed together during an evening concert in Berner Middle School’s gymnasium. All three groups then came together for the finale piece, “America the Beautiful.” Each song was conducted by a different
member of the elementary music faculty. Kelly Ann Gelfer, the director of fine and performing arts, said that the students are very lucky to participate in a recognized music program, as Massapequa has received the Best Communities in Music Education distinction for the last 11 years. She said the children are beneficiaries of the music’s department devoted teachers who themselves are outstanding and passionate musicians.

A Lesson On ‘Mi Familia’ Family is an important component of the fifth grade Spanish curriculum in the Massapequa School District and students at Unqua Elementary School recently reviewed for their final project. To wrap up the year, each student will create a family album in which they will write about family members and create

Students traveled around the room and asked each other different questions, trading cards at the end, with the goal of collecting as many cards as possible by the end of the activity.

Collection Drive for L.I.’s Homeless Children Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola today announced a collection drive to support birthday parties for homeless children on Long Island. Donations will be collected through August 1st and will support the charitable efforts of Birthday Wishes of Long Island, a not-for-
profit organization located in Hicksville. Through the efforts of volunteers and donations, the organization provided birthday parties to 1,288 homeless children in 2018, including gifts, homemade cupcakes, goody bags, activities and crafts. “Birthday Wishes of Long Island is a wonderful organization comprised of
giving and caring volunteers who help bring smiles to the face of homeless children on Long Island – some of whom have never received a birthday party before,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Help bring normalcy, hope and joy to a homeless girl or boy by donating today to this incredible cause.” To support these birthday
