complex as the nation they helped to found developed. According to History.com, Adams and Jefferson were confidantes in the 1780s. But as time wore on, each man developed a different view of what the United States government should be, creating a rift in their relationship that was only widened by the 1800 presidential election. The men ran against each other in that election, which is

still considered one of the more contentious elections in American history. Jefferson ultimately claimed victory, a result so unnerving to Adams that he left Washington, D.C. prior to Jefferson’s inauguration. The two men would ultimately reconcile, exchanging more than 150 letters before dying within hours of one another on Independence Day in 1826.

OPIOID ABUSE AND OVERDOSE PREVENTION EDUCATION - Massapequa Takes Action Coalition partners with YES Community Counseling Center to provide Opioid Abuse and Overdose Prevention Education for families and concerned community members on Wednesday, June 23rd at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom. Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) is partnering with YES Community Counseling Center (YESCCC) to provide Opioid Abuse and Overdose Prevention Education for families and concerned community members on Wednesday, June 23rd at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom. Expanding the awareness and availability of naloxone is a key part of YESCCC and MTAC’s public health response to the opioid epidemic. YESCCC continues to deliver FREE opioid prevention education and naloxone training across the Massapequas including local governments, first responders, schools, organizations, parents, and residents. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that is used to temporarily

reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, namely slowed or stopped breathing. Naloxone is a safe antidote to a suspected overdose and, when given in time, can save a life (Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service). Students Seek End To Gun Violence A team of science research students from Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus looked at the issue of gun violence from a public health standpoint as they participated in the Medical Marvels competition hosed by Northwell Health. The annual event is hosted by the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and Northwell Health’s Center for Workforce Readiness, and encourages Long Island high school students to pursue careers in STEM fields – science, technology, engineering

and math. Each year’s competition addresses a topic deemed a public health crisis. Ames ninth graders in Kimberly Bruno’s science research class were tasked with proposing solutions to decrease incidents of gun violence. Since the contest was held virtually this year, they submitted a video with their ideas. Ms. Bruno said about 30 schools took part in the event. Students proposed an advertisement awareness campaign for social media, similar to ones that warn about the dangers of

smoking and vaping. They also analyzed current gun laws to see if any improvements could be made and recommended the creation of urgent care centers specifically focused on mental health. All of the ideas had to be approached from a health perspective and demonstrate why these proposed solutions could help solve the problem. National Gun Violence Awareness Day is observed during the first week of June, and Ames students and staff were encouraged to show their support by wearing orange to school on June 4.

While he will mostly live the next four years as a regular college student, Michael will have military obligations including special courses and a few nights of training every week. Each summer he will also spend three weeks at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia. “I always wanted to be in the military,” he said. “I have a love for my country and I want to serve for something greater than myself. To be able to go to college on a full scholarship and be able to serve my country is one of the greatest accomplishments, if not the greatest accomplishment, of my life.” When Michael graduates in four years, he will be a second lieutenant and assume a leadership role in the Marines.
