They say that what you put out into the universe in the form of energy, you receive back tenfold. In some manner, at some point in time, life cycles back around to pay us the karma we are supposedly owed. Most often, this is associated with the negative end of the spectrum; rarely are the positive applications of this theory every truly recognized and appreciated. I have often looked to those who seem the most consistently content and have wondered what it is that makes them able to sustain such a healthy sense of optimism and an inner peace that radiates outwardly into the universe. Simply put, they are

genuinely happy. They savor those aspects of life which many of us often take for granted. They make it a point to appreciate each and every moment, and to pay it forward in the manner in which they interact with others. To me, these are the types of individuals we should all strive to surround ourselves with, each and every day. Any opportunity to associate with a positive, breath of fresh air-type persona should be welcomed with open arms; there is no such thing as too much sunshine. In the end, it makes the inevitable storm clouds which manifest along the way that much more tolerable. Of course, this concept is not so simple as mere happiness by association. True bliss comes from within, as

who we are and who we desire to become slowly transition toward being one and the same. They say people don’t change, but I wholeheartedly disagree with that sentiment. Unqua Elementary School physical education teachers Michael Dellicurti and Melissa Osborne gave students a goal of raising $27,000 for the American Heart Association through the annual Jump Rope for Heart event in April. Not only did they achieve that goal, they exceeded it. Students at the Massapequa elementary school collected $30,315 for the organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke.

Any student who raised at least $200 got to hit one of the teachers with a plate full of whipped cream. Unqua Elementary School student Daniel Etter’s talents will become well-known in the Massapequa School District next year. The third-grader was the winner of the FLES Spanish folder contest, meaning his artwork will be featured on folders given out to all third-, fourth- and fifth-graders. The district’s Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools program features two 20-minute Spanish lessons

each week in third and fourth grade, and next year it will be expanded to fifth grade. Third-graders across the district submitted designs for folders that will printed during the summer and given out to more than 1,500 students to keep their FLES coursework. Daniel’s design was selected out of nearly 600 entries. Each third-grade teacher submitted two drawings, with principals and assistant principals then choosing the finalists.

Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis selected the winner from the six top entries. Ms. Iconis, Curriculum Associate for World Language and ENL William Anderson and Principal Deanna Catapano visited Daniel’s classroom during FLES instruction on June 13th to make the surprise announcement. Daniel was congratulated by his classmates, teacher Jill Corson and Spanish teacher Luisa Marino.

Display boards were filled with self-portrait drawings, paintings of food, animals and nature, and sketches of backpacks, and tables were covered in 3D projects including tiedyed hats, painted masks and park plan models. Many projects included a digital component. Art show visitors were able to view student-made stop motion movies on iPads. Student Juliana Dispigno said she enjoyed mixed media projects. She drew animal eyes creating part of the project digitally,

and the rest using graphite and colored pencils. “It was really fun using the iPads,” she said. “It was different from traditional art and we learned how to use different apps to draw.” Ryan Rosenfeld added that he enjoyed seeing the variety of different projects on display at the art show and looking at the work made by his fellow ninthgraders. In reﬂecting on the year, what most stood out for Ryan was greater freedom in choosing how to complete each assignment.

For her commitment to language learning, Hayley Tan, an eighth-grader at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, was presented with the Philip A. Fulvi Love of Language Merit Award by the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers. She was nominated by her Spanish teacher, Janice Kincaid. The award is presented to students who achieve a high grade point average

in their World Language classes and demonstrate a strong interest in the language. Hayley is a student in Ms. Kincaid’s Spanish level 1 accelerated class. Of the four foreign languages offered at Berner Middle School, Hayley said she chose Spanish because it is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. She added that she hopes to have more opportunities in the future to use her Spanish

language skills. “I feel it is important to learn another language because it helps people connect throughout the world,” she said. “Although English is a very commonly used language, it is not the only one that people speak. Being bilingual, trilingual or even multilingual, allows someone to talk with more people, and it provides new opportunities that one may not have otherwise.”

Symposium Sums Up Research Students in Massapequa High School’s Advanced Placement Capstone program presented their findings from the past year at the AP Research Symposium after school in the library on June 7th. The Capstone program is in its second year in Massapequa and consists of two courses. AP Seminar is offered to 10th-graders and includes both individual and team research projects. Each class is co-taught by an English teacher and a social studies teacher. AP Research, offered to 11th-graders who have successfully completed seminar, requires students to select a topic and conduct their own studies that close gaps in existing research. Two AP Research students, Michael Riggi and Bridget Rogers, presented their findings at the symposium. Michael’s topic was “Identifying a potential bias against the year-round education system and the willingness of individuals to conform.” He looked into the possibility of a school year that would have a shorter summer break but would be balanced out by other longer breaks during the

year. In his survey of 600 students, teachers and parents from Massapequa and several other Long Island school districts, he found there is little support for this concept. “When we have to write future research papers in college, we’re familiar with all the processes that go into and the amount of work that is required,” Michael said. “This class is very beneficial, and it helps prepare us for a college working environment.” Bridget’s topic was “Why pediatric brain tumors receive a lack of funding from the National Cancer Institute,” an issue important to her as someone who was successfully treated for a brain tumor. She conducted interviews with a representative of the institute’s budget and finance office, and the doctor who treated her. She said she learned that the lack of funding was the result of decisions within the federal government and scientific organizations. “I got to perform research in a field that I’m extremely passionate about,” said Bridget, who hopes to become a neurosurgeon. “I’m hoping

that I’m able to make some kind of a difference.” Next year, AP Research will expand from an everyother-day elective to a fullyear course that will count as the 11th-grade English class. Teacher Valerie Domenech said because of that change, it will grow from five students this year to more than 90 next year. At the symposium, AP Seminar students presented on their topics in small-group settings. They met with ninth-graders from the Ames Campus who will be taking the course next year. Research topics focused on a wide range of societal issues such as the stock market and economy, the prison system, standardized testing, advertising, gender issues, the environment and more. Ninth-graders were able to learn about the expectations and requirements of AP Seminar from those who just completed the course. The symposium also included student-made videos like “AP Chopped,” in which three students presented the ingredients for success in the course from a home kitchen.

Peep Peep “Peep peep peep” has been the background noise in first-grade classrooms at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District as students have been raising baby chicks. Several weeks ago, each class received an incubator with eggs. The children checked on the eggs every

day and made sure each incubator’s temperature was about 100 degrees. After three weeks, students watched the baby chicks start pecking, and shortly after they had new friends in the classrooms. Each class had between three and nine baby chicks, which were moved into brooders. The students

made sure the young animals had proper food and water. Teachers showed the children how to carefully hold the chicks. The activity helped the first-graders learn about animal life cycles. Students recorded their daily observations in journals, and some classes even named their baby chicks.

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization that serves more than 3,000 people each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank, where its Suffolk County United Veterans project is based. The organization was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County; the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. Services include a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for youth and adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions, providing people, along with our U.S. Veterans, with opportunities to heal and work toward their recovery. Everyone possesses their own unique worth and individuality, and MHAW does a great job providing treatment and services that focus on goals and aspirations specific to each individual person. We had heard a couple referrals for Tom from acquaintances who loved their own experience with him. As soon as we actually started touring homes with Tom it was clear we made the right choice. Tom has so many contacts and years of experience that we knew he would ﬁnd us what we wanted and he did just that. He seems to be somewhat of a legend in Nassau County, everyone seems to know him and have nothing but positive things to say about past dealings with him. We had a deal fall through on a home so the whole process took us a long time, but Tom was right there the whole time, encouraging us to keep looking when we felt like giving up.
