From professional wrestlers to titans of the business world, fifth graders at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District spent time learning about very notable people. For their biography reports, students could pick an impactful person from the past or present to research. The project allowed them to hone their technology skills as they used digital resources like Epic! books to find information and Book Creator to design their multipage reports. Students had to include facts such as when the person was born and notable achievements. Among the famous figures that students researched were wrestler John Cena, Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Tesla owner Elon Musk and aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright. Frank Sinatra said it best – “Now the end is near, and so I face the final curtain.” These are words that come to mind as I complete my term and final message to all after two years of being President of this fine organization. It was indeed my privilege to be the President from 2020-2022 during very interesting times and occurrences. I took office three months after COVID-19 began, and I did not know what to expect. Faith and reason kept me going, and now after two years, the Chamber is on a fine path, continuing our great programs and services. To avoid the risk of leaving anyone out, I will not mention names, but I must thank all involved for making the last two years memorable indeed.

This again is what makes us better as a community organization. One last reminder - the July 4th parade will take place in Massapequa Park and kickoff is 11:00 AM. Student council leaders at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District take on many tasks, from spearheading activities to promoting school spirit, but they also serve as social and emotional role models. Four years ago, the district launched a partnership with the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, implementing the RULER philosophy. The social and emotional learning initiative launched at Berner, and has now become part of the school’s culture. Students learn to recognize, understand, label, express and regulate their emotions. Principal Jason Esposito said that the purpose of RULER is to show students that their feelings, positive or negative, matter and are valid. The goal is to help them to better understand their emotions and express themselves in a productive way. Student council members model strategies for their peers on how to be in control of their emotions. “They embody the traits of people who are emotionally intelligent,” Mr. Esposito said. “They listen to others and they’re aware of each other’s
feelings.” Students noted the impact that they can have on those around them. If someone is having a bad day, that negative energy can spread. Conversely, a positive attitude can go a long way in cheering up others. Eighth grader Tatum Brennan said with emotional intelligence comes the tools to help out a friend who is having a tough time. “You can just make someone’s day by smiling,” added sixth grader Ty Miranda. Kiera Conaghan and Vivienne West noted how their feelings can impact how they do in school or when playing a sport. They said that it is important to have strategies to manage their emotions so they are in a position to succeed. Sixth grade Gabby Anselmo added that it is important to start every morning on a good note because that sets the tone for the day. “We take what we learned and apply it to realworld situations,” Kiera said, of how students use these skills and strategies in their lives. Students have learned several techniques to help regulate their emotions, explained sixth grader Frank Sulawa. They can take deep breaths, count
backwards or have a metamoment, which is a time to pause and reflect before acting. Seventh grader Riley Donohue said that all students face some degrees of stress and nerves, and the RULER philosophy tools help them manage. The mood meter, a colorcoded chart that represents different emotions based on levels of pleasantness and energy, is a particularly valuable resource. In one of the conference rooms, Berner has a large mood table, a social and emotional learning version of the periodic table of elements. The student council leaders say they are grateful that their school puts such a strong emphasis on social and emotional learning, and it makes them feel cared for. Seventh grader Kevin Kern likes the focus on self-care and feels it benefits his emotional well-being. “The school really does a good job with that, to show us how we’re feeling and helping us to feel better,” seventh grade Alex Fischetti said, who noted that the motivational signs and quotes around the school are part of the “little things” that make a big difference.

Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services organization that transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental and intellectual disabilities across New York City and Long Island. Little Flower’s mission is to improve the well-being of those they serve, which they do through rigorous medical and mental health programs and services. They believe that the devastating effects of trauma, poverty, racism, substance abuse, violence and lack of opportunity – particularly on children and families – can be healed with the proven use of effective therapy and support services. They provide care through a “What’s happened to you?” lens as opposed to “What is wrong with you?” lens. Children who have experienced trauma, grief and loss, substance abuse, or have poor social skills, are verbally or physically aggressive, are on the autism spectrum, etc. are offered integrated interdisciplinary treatment in a therapeutic environment at the Residential Treatment Center (RTC) on their Wading River campus. An interdisciplinary treatment team of social workers, mental health staff, childcare staff, educators, medical professionals and a recreation therapist formulate individualized treatment plans that address the specific needs of each of those children. The underlying belief of the center is that a healthy community helps heal. At the RTC, children reside in modern cottages designed to feel like home. The cottages include individual rooms, common areas, a large dining room and a kitchen. Recreational programming there includes the Conway Recreation Center, athletic fields and courts and an outdoor swimming pool. The youth can also participate in off-campus recreation activities such as volunteer services and community involvement. The RTC also offers additional therapies and services, such as the Culinary Arts
program or music and art therapy. Additionally, the youth also attend the Little Flower Union Free School District, a special act public school for students with special educational needs, which is also on their Wading River campus.
Ed And Brooke Attard Applauded For Granting Wishes To Three Critically Ill Children Ed and Brooke Attard own the Learning Experience Centers located in Ronkonkoma, Massapequa and Plainview. The schools provide early education and day care programs. The Centers focus on each of the six early stages of development from infant through to kindergarten. Each facility features classrooms and a playground that ensure a warm, nurturing, educational and stimulating environment to enable the children
to learn, be active and to interact with one another. The Attard family believes in giving back to the community they serve. They recently held a fundraiser at their three locations to grant wishes through the Make a Wish Foundation to three critically ill children. Their three Long Island based centers raised over $15,000 for the organization. “I think it is great that they raised so much money in a month and I commend them for their efforts and
good work,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta. “The Make a Wish Foundation is a great organization and benefits so many children,” added Trotta. “The Attard’s demonstrate the meaning of community. Working alongside the “Make a Wish Foundation” is extraordinary and they definitely made an impact on those children’s lives,” stated Legislator Bergin.
Additionally, Little Flower also offers a Mental Health and Medical Department that utilizes a traumainformed, multi-systemic approach to support to all foster children. Adhering to best practices, nurses coordinate and monitor medical care, including overseeing weekly well-child clinic, and provide screenings, child and caregiver education, assist pediatricians with routine physicals and provide body checks as needed. Children receive dental services and are referred to specialists when recommended. In addition to the RTC, Little Flower also offers Community Family Treatment & Support Services (CFTSS) and Home and Community Based Services (HCBS). Their organization’s service providers address various needs, such as daily living skills, coping skills, crisis prevention, socialization and employment needs, via telehealth, in the home, school and community. Little Free Library A Labor Of Love In need of a good book to read? Head on down to the Massapequa High School Ames Campus, where the newest Little Free Library has opened up on Pittsburgh Avenue, just a few feet from the building. The project was conceived and completed by students in the Career and Community Connections program. A dedication ceremony was held on May 26, with Board of Education trustees, administrators, teachers, parents and students all present. Following a ribboncutting, the library was officially open for business. CCC students were involved in every step of the
process, including buying the materials, building the library, painting it and stocking it with books. They were supported by their teachers Kathleen Wegener and Trish DePalma, along with library media specialist Evangeline King and technology teacher Matthew Burke. “The students have worked incredibly hard this year on preparing the Ames Little Free Library for the Massapequa community,” Ms. Wegener said. “They have all truly enjoyed working on this multidisciplinary, hands-on project.” Ms. DePalma noted that every book was labeled with
a CCC Little Free Library logo, to see how far the books travel. Anyone can take a book from the library, but community members are also encouraged to leave books that they have finished reading and want to share with someone else. CCC students held a collection drive for new and gently used books, for readers of all ages, to initially stock the library. CCC students involved in the creation of the library include Michaela Burke, Lucas Friedman, Ava Gonzalez, Karina Martin, Caitlyn Reece and Christopher Riviezzo.
