included administrators, teachers, teacher assistants, nurses, secretaries, custodians and monitors, who careers in the district began as far back as 1979. Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis and Board of Education President Timothy Taylor thanked them for their service to Massapequa students. The district honored three retiring administrators. Massapequa High School graduate Jean Castelli returned in 2000 after working in Long Beach, and served as assistant principal and principal of McKenna Elementary School before moving to central office. Most recently, she was the assistant to the superintendent for special education and student support services. Dr. David Gaines arrived in Massapequa in 1986 as the high school band director, and has served as the curriculum associate for music since 2008. During his tenure, the district has consistently been named as one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation. Alyssa Mener of the Massapequa UFSD, who attends Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), earned the George Farber Outstanding Student Award for 2018. She has demonstrated a variety of remarkable traits including talent, commitment, honesty, diligence, compassion and high moral standards. Alyssa was honored during the eleventh annual awards celebration at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Alyssa’s first experience with LIHSA was the Summer Arts Academy, where she it became obvious to her teachers that she is “a passionate performer” who is “a perfect fit” for the school’s music program. They urged her to apply and audition for the following school year, which she did, and was soon accepted. For her own part, Alyssa felt right at home from the very beginning of her time at LIHSA. The teen musician has proven to be a gifted vocalist skilled in a variety of styles including pop, jazz, rock and classical. She lends her mellifluent voice to LIHSA’s vocal pop, classical and jazz ensembles. A talented guitarist, she plays with the guitar/string ensemble as well. Alyssa is

I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.” ~ Douglas Adams As I sat in the audience at the recent Press Club of Long Island awards ceremony last week, intently listening to the words of one of our Hall of Fame honorees, the legendary writer and reporter Harvey Aronson, I was struck by the notion that one could choose a particular career to pursue and, so many years later {at the tender age of 89}, remain just as devoutly passionate about it. As he eloquently put it, “I wanted to be a writer… and so I became one.” The simplest sentiments are often the most poignant. In addition to his illustrious career as a groundbreaking journalist, Harvey has also devoted quite a number of

decades to the pursuit of teaching his craft to the next generation. Though I wasn’t fortunate to be enrolled in one of his classes myself, I certainly had my fair share of stellar professors through the years, some whom I reflected upon as I soaked in every word spoken by this fascinating man as he stood before the assembled crowd of media elite.

The Association for Mental Health & Wellness

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups, and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries. If you or someone you know

MHAW is very excited about its 6th annual Kick Stands Up event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd at the Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Memorial Day isn’t just a day off from school, but an opportunity to remember the sacrifices that men and women have made while serving the United States. That is what students at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District learned during a ceremony on May 24th. Several members of Massapequa Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7763 were in attendance, representing several different branches of

the military as well as different eras of combat. The student band and orchestra, dressed in red, white and blue, played patriotic songs including the national anthem and “America the Beautiful.” “Nothing makes a veteran happier than seeing patriotism celebrated in this country,” said William Colfer, commander of the VFW post, who encouraged students to take a few minutes on Memorial Day to reflect upon its true meaning and think

about the people who gave their lives in the name of freedom. Student speakers Jaeda Crawford, Joseph Lagano, Sara Pascazio and Payton Salembier talked about the history of Memorial Day, the Pledge of Allegiance and the American flag, the reasons a flag is flown at half-staff, and the National Moment of Remembrance, which is marked at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day. Joseph and Olivia DeTommasso then played taps.

Legends to Life Second-graders dressed up as legends of the past and present for the living wax museum, an annual tradition at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Each of the three-classes took its turn in the allpurpose room, and families were invited to spend a half-hour learning about

the famous figures on May 24th. Students stood still on black circles, and gave their prepared speeches only when tapped by a guest. They dressed the parts and came prepared with necessary props. The students recently completed a biography reading and writing unit. Each child was asked to select a famous person to

research, and had to select five interesting facts to include in his or her wax museum presentation including an item of information that most people likely wouldn’t know. The children selected athletes, authors, entertainers, scientists and world leaders, among others.

Massapequa School District Taking advantage of the Massapequa School District’s 1:1 Chromebook initiative, the youngsters are using technology to learn about other thirdgraders in Steuben, Maine. The students have been making Flipgrid videos

through the GridPals initiative, which connects children digitally all over the world. The class of 10 students in a small school in Steuben created the first set of videos. At East Lake, Annette Ready’s students then recorded their responses, talking about their school and their town, sharing their hobbies and personal interests, and

asking questions of their video penpals. Technology learning coach Louisa Vecchione said the two classes were connected through Flipgrid. The goal is to have the students continue to communicate for the remainder of the school year.
