Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org

Their Long Term Housing Program combines affordable housing with New Ground’s intensive services. Currently this includes a home in Huntington with two homeless Veteran families, a home in Bethpage under renovations and plans to add more housing units. For 3-5 years, New Ground provides all the needed educational, vocational and counseling services to the family members living in this housing, as well as basic needs and general support. Residents also take time with a social worker and put together a plan of how they can reach their goals. All residents pay an affordable rent and although New Ground assists them with various costs and hurdles they may face, they truly get the feeling of being a responsible homeowner. New Ground’s JumpStart Program launched in 2012 to expand these critical services to additional homeless families on their wait-list for the Long Term Housing Program. This Program is open to any homeless families, not just Veterans, and is intended to give families a jump-start on accomplishing their goals. When these families later transition into the Long Term Housing Program, they are well on their way toward realizing the steps needed to secure an independent future. A primary social worker is assigned to all families in both of these programs once they start with the organization. New Ground social

The New Ground Veterans Program is another very important part to their organization. Homeless Veterans can get placed in reduced cost housing and be provided with intensive social work and education services by New Ground to assist them with achieving goals in the areas of employment, financial literacy, education, career development, parenting, basic life skills, education advocacy and more. In 2016 their services were expanded so they can serve an even greater number of Veteran households. Through collaboration with the Northport VA Center, New Ground began offering their programs to over 400 homeless Veteran households in their Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing Program. Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. Charles is actively involved with the Middle Country Chamber of Commerce, so he stays truly connected to everything local. He also participates in many community events.

As Sue felt more fit and energetic, Robyn encouraged her to start running. Robyn is part of a running team called Elite Feats and is known as an “Ultra Runner”. This is someone who runs more than 26.2 miles at once! Robyn and Sue have since become friends and Sue is now a member of the team. These great results do not stop with Sue as she now inspires others to make similar small changes in their diet to improve their own health. Robyn encourages those struggling with type II Diabetes, high cholesterol and/or high blood pressure to simply come to a class. She is confident that she can help you implement some changes in your diet and you can regain control of all of these, in many cases eliminating the need for the medicines we have

all grown accustomed to. She spoke specifically of another client who, after taking a free class with her became focused on getting off insulin for his Diabetes. He made significant changes and only 5 weeks later he was off all medication and his cholesterol and BP improved significantly as well. Now his wife attends. Robyn can also help with other common issues such as Crohn’s disease and food allergies. Although she states that you may not cure the issue, you can absolutely control it and maintain a state of remission. Robyn is also available for speaking engagements on nutrition and cooking. She can speak on these topics in general or can get very specific depending on the intended audience.

Recently she ran a 70K run, which is 43 miles! She is now planning to participate in the run around Lake Ronkonkoma on June 22, which raises funds in honor of Navy Seal Lt. Michael Murphy. As if that wasn’t enough, she is going to start the run by running to it….a 50 mile run overnight from NYC to Ronkonkoma to then run four more miles around the lake. Ninth grade artists put a new twist on a common practice by using technology to create their artist statements, which analyze their successes and struggles this year. In preparation for the annual art show at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, students in Tildy Becker-DeLuca’s studio in art class recorded their statements, which will be accessible to anyone with a smartphone. Each student will have about a half-dozen pieces displayed at the art show on June 5. Typically, they would post their artist

statement with their work, but this year there will be a QR code instead. Guests can scan the code with their cell phone cameras and hear each student artist recite his or her statement. The students worked with technology learning coach Jarrett Fifield to record their statements. On their Chromebooks they used Vocaroo, an online voice recorder. Students could record as many times as they wanted until they were satisfied. Each artist received a unique QR code which linked to the recording,

and could also download it onto their computers. “This is a good tool for a project like this because it’s simple,” Mr. Fifield said. “Their need is pretty direct in providing a way for viewers of their art to hear their artist statements.” Ms. Becker-DeLuca said that as students prepared their artist statements, they were asked to consider several factors including their favorite and least favorite projects of the year, how they have grown as artists and their overall experiences in the class.

Kindergartners Go Bananas Kindergartners improved their literacy skills and also learned about philanthropy at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Children in Patty Dempsey’s class read a book about Jane Goodall as part of the nonfiction unit, and studied her lifelong

work with chimpanzees in Africa. Ms. Dempsey also introduced students to a similar project spearheaded by Ellen DeGeneres to protect endangered mountain gorillas. They completed short writing projects about the two notable women. Children decided that they wanted to make a

difference so they raised money for The Ellen Fund to support the endangered gorillas. The youngsters did chores at home for 10 days and were paid by their parents. The class earned a total of $260. Students filled out charts explaining what they did and how doing those chores made them feel.

preventable cause of skin cancer,” Councilman Labriola said. “Through the introduction of 16 dispensers at various beach and pool locations, the Town will help residents find a convenient way to help prevent this chronic disease.” Dispensers will be set up in cooperation with Syosset Hospital/Plainview Hospital-Northwell Health.

Several weeks ago, each first grade class received eggs from a farm, which were then placed in an

incubator. During the 21day incubation period, students learned many facts about the development of baby chickens. They also performed experiments with store-bought eggs, such as an egg strength test. Just before Memorial Day, the eggs hatched. Teacher Danielle DiAlto

said the first two eggs in her classroom hatched overnight, followed by three the next day, which her students got to watch. The chicks were then transferred to a brooder and supplied with food and water. Children gave the chicks names and learned how to carefully hold the tiny animals.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “These new trees will help stop pollutantcarrying storm water runoff from going directly into the Seaford Creek during severe storms. I thank the Boy Scouts and volunteers who joined us in planting these new trees in Anchor Park.”

Anchor Park is located adjacent to Seaford Creek, which is susceptible to storm water runoff during significant weather events. The new trees will help reduce the effects of potential flooding and serve as buffers against pollutants and sediments.
