Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, nonprofits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is well-rounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met.

In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island.

She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. During these trying times when only essential businesses are operating, Eileen has shifted her focus to helping the homless community, a group she feels extremely passionate for. She has been bringing homeless individuals food, clothes, blankets, shoes, etc. to help them feel loved and cared for. Although she actively helps homless people throughout Long Island, she focuses a lot in East Meadow, a community she finds to have a large homeless population. “I’m one person trying desperately to make a difference,” says Eileen. “The ‘not in my backyard’ mentality needs to be a thing of the past!”

Valedictorian Talia Cartafalsa, foreground, and salutatorian Alexa Mangione have been friends since middle school.

Five years ago, Talia Cartafalsa and Alexa Mangione entered Berner Middle School together from different sides of the Massapequa School District and quickly became friends. Little did they know that they would lead similar academic paths en route to becoming the top ranked graduates of Massapequa High School’s Class of 2020. Talia, with a grade point average of 100.125, was named the valedictorian while Alexa’s 99.8 GPA earned her the distinction of salutatorian. “I’m grateful,” Talia said, “and I’m proud that it’s the two of us because we’ve been friends since 7th grade.” It wasn’t just in class that Talia and Alexa made their mark. They were two active citizens in the Massapequa school community. Talia was the stage manager for the Massapequa High School and Berner Middle School musical productions, a member of the French Club and French and National honor societies. Additionally, she worked as the assistant to the director for the Summer Fine Arts program. Alexa was president of the Visions art and literary magazine, a member of the Spanish Club and the Art, Spanish and National honor societies. She has also been a student assistant in the Summer Fine Arts program, and this past year supported young artists in ceramics, sculpture and printmaking classes.

Did you know? The American Academy of Family Physicians notes that children should get at least one hour of physical activity per day. The AAFP notes that many kids easily achieve that marker simply by being children and engaging in the activities kids are drawn to each day, such as running, climbing and playing games like tag with other youngsters. The Canadian Paediatric Society notes that exercise needs change as children advance through various stages in life, and that means activities should change along with them. For example, the

CPS recommends that physical activities for toddlers should be fun and encourage children to explore and try new things. Unstructured physical activity or free play can benefit toddlers. As toddlers become preschoolers, physical activities can become more structured, though the CPS notes that children this age may not understand the rules of organized sports nor are they necessarily coordinated enough to participate in them. However, structured activities like games of tag and throwing and catching may be appropriate for some preschoolers.

As children enter kindergarten and advance through elementary school, physical activities can be moderate to vigorous in intensity. Organized sports can become part of the fitness regimen at this time, though the CPS recommends short instruction times, ﬂexible rules, free time in practices, and a focus on fun rather than competition. Parents who want to learn about age-appropriate physical activities can encourage their children to embrace fitness and are urged to speak with their children’s physicians.

Massapequa Students Earn High Marks On German Exam

In recognition of their strong performance on the 2020 National German Exam, 23 students from Massapequa High School received awards from the American Association of Teachers of German. Three ninth graders at the Ames Campus, who are in the Level 2 German class, were recognized including Jacob Bass who earned a silver medal and Lily DiBenedetto and Michael Zanone who received achievement awards. At Massapequa High School’s main campus,

honorees in the Level 3 German class included silver medal winners Lucas Marsh, Matthew McAuley and Kathleen Tumminello, bronze medal winners Liam De Vos and Jason Johnson, and achievement award recipients Nicole Kilkenny, Nicholas Monty and Jonathan Yahner.
