Pools to Open Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Thomas Hand today announced that residents can get a jumpstart on summer by pre-registering for Town pool passes beginning on Saturday, May 26th. Wind ‘N Willow is a one-of-a-kind NYS licensed pre-school located in North Massapequa. They have a wonderful history in their community, as they have been caring for and educating young children for almost 20 years. Linda Hill has been the owner of this pre-school learning center for the past two and a half years. She is a well-trusted leader who truly cares about the children and families she serves. Linda describes going to work as “going to her happy place.” Wind ‘N Willow accepts children from as young as 18 months to as old as five years of age. They operate every month of the year and also offer a 10-month option for families who wish to keep their children home during the summer months. They have an early drop-off available at 7:30 a.m. and a late pick-up option at 6:00 p.m. If you are looking for an after school enrichment program for your child, Wind ‘N Willow offers this

As a result, Linda made the decision to expand the pre-school and add two additional classrooms, as well as a kitchen area so that she can offer a lunch program going forward. Sharing is Caring I recently listened in on a rather interesting Press Club of Long Island panel discussion, highlighting the process which went into investigating a cold case that had gone unsolved for over 50 years on the east end of Long Island. The teamwork between reporters and the police department eventually resulted in the case being “cracked,” so to speak, and the unsolved murder put to rest. I bring this up not because of my fascination with true crime stories; but rather, it brought to light the importance of a component often missing in many lines of work, in life as a whole … that of collaboration. Often, the focus is on independence, on doing things one’s own way, with little room for input from others. Cooperation is key – this a concept taught to us from the first day of kindergarten on up, earlier even, as we begin to learn the process of sharing our resources (even if those happen to be building blocks or Barbie dolls). I don’t often have the

opportunity to cover events; but recently, I was privileged to take my journalistic tools into the field and exercise some of those reporting and photography skills honed in the lecture halls of college, even as far back as the grade school classroom. As I stood on the tarmac at Republic Airport last week, borrowed camera in hand, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, I scanned the crowd assembled. Veteran reporters mixed with fresh-faced interns, all waiting for a glimpse of the majestic planes. Some carried smart phones; others set up elaborate tripods and fiddled with expensive lenses, all determined to capture that “perfect” shot upon landing. Suddenly, there was a roar overhead. All attention was instantly focused on the sky, as cameras zoomed, record buttons were pushed and people jostled for a better angle. And then, just like that, they were gone, gliding to a landing on a distant runway before slowly taxiing toward us, where they would

eventually park for follow-up pilot interviews. All around, you heard the murmurings of Did you get the shot? and I thought they would be approaching from the other way… Can we get a do-over? And in that mix of elation and disappointment as many realized they had not, in fact, captured much of anything in their respective frames, there emerged that collaboration I speak of – that natural instinct to cooperate for a common goal. Phone numbers were exchanged, business cards swapped and contacts were instantly made, with promises to share footage and photos. After all, we were here for the same reason. No benefit to withholding information that, ultimately, we all desired to share with the masses. We may not have cracked a case that morning, but we demonstrated on a much smaller scale the beauty of cooperation, of teamwork. The stunning fighter jets aside, that may have been the most beautiful sight of all.

With almost a year of experience under their belts, young musicians at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District showcased their talents at the Beginner Spring Concert. Third- and fourthgraders performed for their peers during a morning show at school followed by an evening performance for families at the high school. The concert featured instrumental and vocal ensembles. Music teacher Tom Tucker conducted the third-grade recorder band which performed songs included the “Peanuts” theme and “Rockin’ Robin,” as well as the fourth-grade chorus which sang a folk song from the Torres Strait Islands, “Sesere Eeye,” and

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

National Recognition Daniel Bachman, a social studies teacher at Massapequa High School, has been named the American Lawyers Alliance Teacher of the Year. He was recognized for his work with the law program and mock trial team. Mr. Bachman, a 1990 graduate of Massapequa High School, has taught for 23 years including the past 18 at his alma mater. He has helped grow the law program, which is part of the social studies

department, and is one of six faculty members teaching at least one law class. More than 200 hundred students are enrolled in 13 total sections of Introduction to Law levels 1, 2 and 3, which meet in the law classroom that resembles a courtroom. He also teaches Advanced Placement government. He serves as an adviser to the mock trial team and coaches the “A” squad, which recently won the 2018 Nassau County Bar Association tournament. The team also won the county championship in 2012 and has placed at numerous other competitions. Every year, he brings the team to the Harvard Mock Trial High School Seminar Program. The national Teacher of the Year award recognizes law-related educators who further the understanding of the role of courts, law enforcement agencies and the legal profession; help students recognize their responsibilities as well as their rights; encourage effective

law-related education programs in their schools and communities; and increase communication among students, educators and those involved professionally in the legal system. Mr. Bachman has recruited several Massapequa High School graduates who now work as attorneys and judges to mentor mock trial students. Last year, he attended the Supreme Court Summer Institute for Teachers, a weeklong program in Washington, D.C. with workshops led by Supreme Court experts, journalists, authors and attorneys to provide insight on arguing in front of the court. He then hosted training in Massapequa High School’s law room for other teachers on Long Island. “There’s a genuine enthusiasm that goes along with this program,” Mr. Bachman said. “We do everything. If there’s a competition out there, we’re in it. I have my dream job.” Mr. Bachman invites the

district’s fifth-graders into the law room every year to see a case performed by high school students. He also organizes the high school’s Law Day in which is attended by more than 100 students who serve as lawyers and witnesses in mock cases. In 2016, took five students to witness the presidential debate at Hofstra University. “Mr. Bachman’s tireless work ethic is the main reason why the Massapequa High School law program is so successful,” said Dr. Brian Trapani, the curriculum associate for social studies. “He enthusiastically devotes his time on nights and weekends to ensure that students are prepared for upcoming tournaments. Hoops Lover Massapequa High School student Jo Jo Gonzalez loves basketball and on May 21st, he got a surprise visit from the Harlem Wizards. Jo Jo’s family was selected to appear on an NBC production of “George to the Rescue,” in which George Oliphant and his

team of contractors and designers renovate a home or yard. At Jo Jo’s house, they will redo his backyard and build a basketball court. As a kickoff event, Massapequa High School hosted an assembly with the Harlem Wizards

basketball team, who displayed their trick shots. Students and staff filled the bleachers and cheered on Jo Jo and the Wizards, who played a team featuring Oliphant and several of Jo Jo’s teachers.

Sharing Writing Tips Popular children’s author Suzy Kline visited third-graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on April 24th to help them become better writers. She is best known for the “Horrible Harry” book series. Ms. Kline spoke to the

entire grade during an assembly, then conducted in-class workshops. She shared her own books, as well as those of other authors, to give examples of different writing elements such as setting, plot, character development, and conflict and resolution.

Students were then asked to compose their own stories as she observed and gave pointers. Each child had to envision him or herself as the main character, establish a setting and come up with a plot based upon the character hearing a buzzing noise.

on April 18th, Schwarting Elementary School fourth-grader Jon Luca Frucci won the award for demonstrating determination to achieve and maintain personal and academic potential. He was also recognized for having a gunuine concern for others, for school and for the community as well as having a positive influence on classmates, setting high standards for behavior and for possessing a generous and kind nature. This isn’t the first time Jon Luca has been honored. He also won the same award in kindergarten. His parents John, Tara and sister Jaclyn are very proud of his achievements, as well as his grandparents Sharon & Tom Fattoruso.
