Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help.

One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group. The brotherhood and family values are not just a way to live, but a way of life. One for all and all for one is not just a quote but it is their reality. After children have been introduced into the B.A.C.A. family they are not helpless or powerless anymore. The Long Island B.A.C.A. Chapter had their 100 Mile Ride Event on Saturday, May 18, 2019. Thousands of B.A.C.A. members from around the world participated in this event in various countries and states on the same day! They raised awareness of child abuse and of the services they provide for abused children all over the world.

Patchogue. If you are interested in becoming a B.A.C.A. member you must meet certain requirements. Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday). You can also donate to this organization at anytime on their website. If you want to make a donation to the Long Island Chapter directly, please contact the Long Island B.A.C.A. Digital Design It was easy for students at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District to express their feelings about their moms, as technology helped them make heartfelt Mother’s Day gifts. Kindergartners thought of words that describe their mothers, like caring, loving and sweet, and made word art. Children typed the words and selected a shape, and the computer generated an image for

them. They were able to customize their designs by picking the color scheme and font. Third graders brainstormed different memories with their mothers and selected a favorite one to write about. Using Google Slides on their Chromebooks, they shared these special moments over a floral background. The completed images were printed out and given as Mother’s Day presents.

Students in several classes published copies of the Mother’s Day Press. Under the headline “World’s Greatest Mom,” each student wrote about his or her mother’s character traits and personal interests, as well as special memories together, and included a picture. Computer teacher assistant Donna Meyer supported students in creating these personalized projects.

HONING THEIR HOOPS SKILLS - Basketball was the theme during recent physical education classes at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade rotated through dribble, passing and shooting stations that were set up throughout the gymnasium. The ninth graders spent weeks perfecting their devices under the direction of advisers Maureen Burke and Nicholas Donohue. Not only did they have to construct rockets that could fly high, but they had to create devices that could protect an egg when falling to the ground. Mr. Donohue said that students, who worked

either individually or in small groups, were judged on both flight time and whether or not their eggs cracked. Students applied several scientific principles such as air pressure, engineering and thrust to weight ratio, in addition to building their critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Nature Knowledge With flowers and trees coming into bloom, it was the perfect time for the plant unit in Meredith O’Pasek’s second grade classroom at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School

District. As part of the science curriculum, students learned about the different parts of a plant, both underground and above. Additionally, each child planted a sunflower seed

in a small cup of dirt. The young gardeners will watch their sunflowers grow throughout May and record their observations, before taking their flowers home.

Hearty Fundraising Effort Consistently one of the top fundraisers on Long Island, Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently raised $36,400 for the American Heart Association. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade participated in the Kids Heart Challenge on April

17, in which they danced along to music and did different exercises with jump ropes. Led by physical education teachers Michael Dellicurti and Melissa Osborne, children did physical activities that promote cardiovascular health. Pledges were tallied in the weeks that followed. The school has eclipsed

the $30,000 mark on several occasions.
