The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation. Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times. They are overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Robert Misseri, President of this organization. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.” Robert is also the President of Paws of War, another non-profit right here on Long Island. This organization trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love only a companion animal can bring. Throughout this pandemic, they have been tending to the most at risk veterans. They find that their older senior veterans typically are very prideful and refuse to ask for any handouts. Many live alone and will still go out and put themselves at risk

to get food for their pets. Hank, a Smithtown resident and veteran, was someone that Paws of War helped. When they arrived at his home, they noticed a his two very proud flags were destroyed. They handed off the pet food and trays of hot food that Cambridge Catering has provided, but they didn’t stop there. East Lake Trivia Challenge Is A Hoot! children could log in and test their knowledge. Students were already familiar with Kahoot!, a game-based learning platform, because teachers frequently use it as a tool for their students to review course material in a fun and interactive way. The multiple choice and true-false questions centered on East Lake people, places and pride. Students were asked which faculty member loves giraffes (library media specialist Renee Susman),

what East Lake’s motto is (“Soaring to new heights”) and which club created the new mural (Cricut club). Some questions were based upon pictures of different locations in the building. Second grader Michael Ocuto said his favorite question was the one about Freddy the rabbit, who appears every spring on a season flag in the lobby, because, “I’ve known his name since kindergarten but never thought this piece of knowledge would prove useful.”

East Lake trivia was chosen as the topic so all students, kindergarten through fifth grade, could fairly compete. The nearly 200 participants were ranked based on the number of questions they answered correctly as well as speed.
