The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk) is a non-profit organzation that operates a number of programs in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Based in Patchogue, EOC of Suffolk is dedicated to promoting selfsufficiency among low-income families and individuals. Its programming largely centers on revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need. One of this non-profit’s programs that serves people in Suffolk County and Nassau County is called Chronic Health Care Coordination. Managed by program director Delmarie Gotti, Chronic Health Care Coordination supports individuals with such chronic illness as HIV/AIDS, mental health-related conditions, heart disease, diabetes, asthma and hepatitis C. It also serves populations with obesity, substance abuse problems, sickle cell disease and other long-term conditions. This Chronic Health Care Coordination program solely serves people with incomes below the poverty line. Participants, who must be on Medicaid, also often receive various forms of food and housing assistance. Because of their circumstances, and because of the day-to-day life challenges many participants face, it’s often difficult for them to maintain a proper focus on the management of their chronic health needs. Many are jobless and many lack an adequate supply of food. Some are homeless or have lacked proper housing for years.
participants are receiving the necessary care to stay healthy and to stay out of emergency rooms and hospitals. EOC of Suffolk team members help their clients “navigate the system.” They can assist with the filing of applications for various forms of public assistance. They may help connect participants with food pantries and help arrange assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps. Additionally, a support team from EOC of Suffolk can help clients find housing and even help arrange for the services of a moving company. If clients are grappling with behavioral or mental health issues, EOC staffers can help them get proper professional assistance. They’ll help participants get past possible stigmas often associated with mental illness. The EOC of Suffolk team can assist by lining up such support as therapeutic assistance, group therapy and medications. While individual care plans vary from client to client, the most common, long-term goal of the Chronic Health Care Coordination program is to help participants manage their personal health care needs, stabilize their lives, become independent and find work. Clients who achieve these goals “graduate” from the program, ready to move on with their lives on a firm foundation. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson announce the Town’s S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) and Homeowners Cleanup Days for the month of June. Residents can drop off materials at the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal Complex, located at 101 Bethpage-Sweet Hollow Road in Old Bethpage. S.T.O.P. program Saturday, June 4th from 9am – 4pm: collects various hazardous materials, including: asbestos material (double bagged); automobile batteries; automobile tires (with or without rims); brake and transmission fluids; drain and oven cleaners; fire extinguishers; fares; fluorescent bulbs; gasoline; pesticides and insecticides; oil-based and latex paint; outdoor gas grill propane tanks; photo chemicals; rechargeable and button batteries; small aerosol cans; smoke detectors; solvents; spot removers;
thermostats; waste motor oil and antifreeze; and wood preservatives. “Improperly disposing of products such as waste oil, oven cleaner or paint thinner could contaminate your water supply,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Anything poured on the ground or put into cesspools, storm drains, or recharge systems can work its way down to the aquifer or our waterways.” Homeowners Cleanup Day - Saturday, June 11th from 8:30am – 4pm: collects non-hazardous waste, including: air conditioners; all e-waste; campers; boats and boat trailers (proof of ownership required - oil, gas, other fluids and batteries removed); clean, broken concrete; large metal items; propane tanks and propane torches; tires; and yard waste. “Many of our residents are getting their yards readied for summer and may have large amounts of non-hazardous
debris to dispose,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “Residents can bring items such as used tires, fence posts, clean broken concrete or yard waste to our Homeowners Cleanup.” Free Paper Shredding Services - Saturday, June 11th from 8:30am – 4pm: provides residents an opportunity to destroy unwanted documents in a safe and secure manner. Residents only, no businesses, can bring up to four bankers’ boxes of paper to the shredding program. The Town’s S.T.O.P. and Homeowners programs are open to residents within the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal District. Proof of residency is required. Summer Swim Lessons Registration Available Online Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand recently announced that registration for the Town’s summer swim lessons will take place online beginning Tuesday, May 31st at 9:00 am on the Town’s website at www. oysterbaytown.com/ parks. Swim lessons are available at all Town pools (SyossetWoodbury Park, Plainview-Old Bethpage Park, Bethpage Community Park and Marjorie Post Park) for children ages 5 and older. “Because we live in a Town sandwiched
between the Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, it is extremely important that children in the Town of Oyster Bay learn how to swim,” said Councilman Hand. “Our swim lessons have been a hugely popular program for many years as children learn how to safely enjoy fun in the pool under the guidance of our American Red Cross certified lifeguards.” There are four two-week sessions throughout the summer. Classes are run on weekdays at 11:15 am and 12:15 pm for 45 minutes each.
The registration fee is $55 per child for the first two-week session with a season pass. If the same child signs up for additional two-week sessions, the fee will be $30 per subsequent two-week session. For those without a season pass the registration fee is $75 per child for the first two-week session and $50 per subsequent two-week session. Unbeknownst the Tischlers, the drug was known to have serious sideeffects on some dogs and because they had not been given any prior warning from the veterinarian, they began to administer the drug as per his instructions. As a result, Bouy began to suffer acute kidney failure and was eventually put to sleep. Sadly, this tragedy, like many others affecting pet-owners across New York State, might have been avoided had there been a
requirement to establish informed consent for prescribed medications. “From the moment when Buoy’s tragic fate became clear to us, Jimmy and I began efforts to ensure that Buoy’s short life would have meaning,” said Mary Kate. “The most important thing to us was to raise awareness about the lack of required warnings and to attempt to ensure that no other pet would suffer the way that Buoy did. And, when Jimmy himself suffered an untimely death six years ago, I continued to march on with our fight for the enactment of Buoy’s Law. Today, I am confident that Jimmy and Buoy are smiling down on me, very proud!” Now that Bouy’s Law has passed both the Senate and Assembly it is expected to be signed by Governor Hochul before the end of the year.

In a unanimous vote, Senator John E. Brooks was able to pass Senate Bill S.1289-B for the 4th time since he first sponsored it. What makes this time different is the fact that its “same as” bill in the NYS Assembly (A.4978; Englebright) finally passed several days earlier after having been held up in committee during previous legislative sessions. Also known as “Bouy’s Law,” S.1289-B requires veterinarians to provide certain information to animal owners regarding the drugs dispensed to an animal. Such information includes the name and description of the drug, the directions for use, actions to be taken in the event of a missed dose; instructions for proper storage, any common reasonably anticipated adverse effects associated with the use of such drug, and manufacturer precautions and relevant warnings. “For most of us, our pets are members of our families and when they are sick or in pain, we want to know as much as possible about possible treatments and their consequences,” said Senator Brooks. “Since veterinarians are already provided this information, it would seem only common sense to advise pet owners as to all potential side effects of prescribed medications. Receiver Pravato Advises Late School Taxpayers Of Last Chance To assist property owners who missed the May 10th deadline for paying their 2021-2022 school taxes, Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents they can still pay the bill by June 1st with a State-mandated 2% late payment penalty while avoiding additional interest and fees from accruing on their property. Late payers should immediately contact the Tax Receiver Pravato’s office at (516) 624-6400 if they did
not receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill. Payments postmarked after May 31st cannot be accepted since the collection warrant will have expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501. Town To Upgrade Field Of Dreams In Massapequa With New Synthetic Turf Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town will upgrade two athletic fields at Field of Dreams in Massapequa. As part of these upgrades, the Town will replace two synthetic turf fields, including the east soccer/lacrosse/ football field and the practice field. These replacements will not only improve the playing surfaces for young athletes, but also the overall safety for players. “These safety upgrades will help
protect local athletes and children who use these fields, as the existing synthetic fields have become worn out over time,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Synthetic fields improve the look of our community, help alleviate the high costs associated with maintaining grass fields, and increase play time for athletes as weather has limited impact on the fields.” Synthetic turf fields have an approximate useful life of 8-10 years, depending on use, and are less expensive
than the long-term cost of maintaining natural grass and a dirt surface. Synthetic fields also provide the potential for fewer cancellations of games due to inclement weather, as the field is able to absorb rain storms in a manner that is not possible on a dirt infield. Music Program Earns Repeat Recognition For the 14th consecutive year, the Massapequa School District has been nationally recognized for its music program. It was one of 738 districts across the country to be named to the 2022 Best Communities for Music Education list, a designation from the National Association for Music Merchants Foundation. Massapequa’s consistent inclusion on the list reflects its strong music education program, which includes a wealth of opportunities for students at the elementary, middle and high school levels. General
music classes begin in kindergarten, and students have the chance to join the band, chorus and orchestra in fourth grade. They can continue singing and playing throughout their secondary careers, with chances to join numerous ensembles. The NAMM Foundation recognizes the outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community leaders in supporting music education as part of a well-rounded education for all children. This year’s awards program particularly celebrates
