Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help. This organization started as an idea to help one wounded child. This child was eight years old at the time and was so frightened of his perpetrators that he would not leave his residence. Their founder, having had kind and loving experiences with bikers in his youth, was moved to include this boy in his biker circle. Within weeks this boy was seen all over town playing with other children and riding his bike. The idea to rally the biker community in defense and in support of children was actualized in 1995, when the first ride was held to visit wounded children and bring them into the biker family. That first ride had twenty seven bikes present. From there it was only a matter of time before the word spread quickly about what was happening in Utah. Shortly after forming the first chapter in Utah, another chapter was formed in that state, then Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas. The rest is part of the B.A.C.A. history. One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group! The brotherhood and family values are not just a
way to live, but a way of life. One for all and all for one is not just a quote but it is their reality. After children have been introduced into the B.A.C.A. family they are not helpless or powerless anymore.

The Great South Bay Music Festival: Saturday, July 20, 2019 and Sunday, July 21, 2019 in Patchogue. If you are interested in becoming a B.A.C.A. member you must meet certain requirements. Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday). You can also donate to this organization at anytime on their website. Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Agape Community Church Mastic, NY Agape Community Church is a non-profit organization based in Mastic. They are focused on the Long Island community and will be holding their annual Back To School Event on Saturday, August 17 from 12-5PM, where they will be giving away free school supplies and they will serve refreshments. They are already taking donations for this event and are attempting to raise additional funds and supplies this year. They understand that a lot of children may begin a new school year this upcoming fall without all the needed supplies. Agape Community Church believes community support is crucial to helping these children. Donations of any size are welcome. Plainedge School District High School senior Nicole Jacobsen has been named a winner in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship competition. Nicole was chosen for one of 7,500 National Merit Scholarship Awards nationwide in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. These students were then narrowed down to 15,000 finalists and then 7,500 winners. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
Tech Catches On Technology is adding a new dimension to Michael Viola’s physical education classes at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. Students recently used their Chromebooks to create videos of themselves throwing and catching, which will be used to assess their skills. Mr. Viola wanted to infuse technology into the curriculum in a way in
which students remained physically active. He worked with technology learning coach Louisa Vecchione to create an activity that did just that. Sixth graders paired up and threw balls back and forth to each other. Using the Flipgrid app, one student in each pair was recorded at a time for about 20 seconds. Assessing each student’s individual skills could take
several class periods, Mr. Viola explained. Instead, the videos were created during one period, which he can watch outside of class and then provide feedback. He explained that students need to be proficient in throwing and catching for units in the physical education curriculum in seventh grade and beyond.

Before the start of each school day, a group of fifth graders gather in a second-floor classroom to tell the news at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. The Birch Lane Broadcast Club produces a short program each morning that is later played in all classrooms. There about 30 students in the club, who work with their advisers, technology learning coach Vickie Ahearn and music teacher Tom Tucker. Each morning, a group of five
or six students assigned to that day’s broadcast arrive early and write the script. Each program includes weather, sports, birthdays, special announcements and a quote of the day. Students gain experience in different positions in front of the camera and behind the scenes. They also learn how to use green screen technology in selecting the background and graphics for each broadcast. Each edition of WBLE Morning News is uploaded to the school’s YouTube channel so it can

Plainedge Val & Sal Plainedge High School is proud to announce its valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2019. The district congratulates valedictorian Kaitlyn Szalay, who will be attending Tufts University for biochemistry in the fall, and salutatorian Lauren Redus who will be attending the University of Rochester for mathematics. For her tremendous achievement on AP exams, Kaitlyn has been named an AP Scholar with Distinction, and a Commended Student. She volunteers at the Long Island Children’s Museum’s Green Teens Program, and is working on her Girl Scout Gold Award this year. Kaitlyn is a member of the Plainedge National Honor Society, English Honor Society and Tri-M Honor Society, as well as the varsity tennis team, student council
and chamber orchestra. She serves as president of the Math Honor Society, and vice president of the Forensics Club and Science Honor Society. Kaitlyn works part time as a peer tutor. An Advanced Placement student in nine courses, Lauren is a member of the Math Honor Society, National Honor Society and Forensics Club at Plainedge High School. She also serves as treasurer of the International Club and works part time as a peer tutor, and as a soccer coach for the Plainedge Soccer Club’s Little Feet Program. Lauren has played soccer herself for the Plainedge Soccer Club’s Travel Team for the past eight years. She plans to pursue chemical engineering or become an actuary. The district congratulates both students on their achievements.
