Alzheimer’s Caregiver Tips On May 20, the two organizations will host “Play by Play: Creating Care Plans,” a virtual program on combating caregiver stress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “A plan can make a real difference for anyone involved in caregiving,” said Kate Anastasia, director of programs at the Alzheimer’s Association.

“Every team needs a playbook to succeed, and the same is true of caregiving teams. Team members can often ignore their own needs, leading to stress and potentially health problems. Every good caregiving plan includes both the person with Alzheimer’s or dementia and the people providing care.”

The Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation was founded in honor of former University of Arkansas football coach and athletic director Frank Broyles and his wife, Barbara, who both had Alzheimer’s disease. In 2006, Coach Broyles penned “Coach Broyles’ Playbook for Alzheimer’s Caregivers,” which offers strategies and goal-

oriented advice for those caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s. Those who attend the free program will receive a free copy of Broyles’ book. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, there are more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease and more than 11 million family members caring for

them. In New York alone, there are 410,000 people battling the disease and 586,000 caregivers. “Play by Play: Creating Care Plans” will begin at 2 p.m. EDT on Thursday, May 20. High Marks Again For Massapequa Music Program

The Massapequa School District has again been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from the National Association for Music Merchants Foundation. This is the 13th consecutive year that Massapequa was recognized for its outstanding commitment to music education. It was one of 686 districts in the country to be named to the 2021 list. To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Massapequa responded to detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and

community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. “Music is important to Massapequa, whether on campus or in the community beyond” said Director of Fine and Performing Arts Vincent Green. “After such a challenging year, being recognized for our continuing efforts will reinvigorate the students, staff and community in supporting and growing the music program.” Despite restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, music remains an important

part of education in Massapequa. General music instruction at the elementary schools and small-group instrumental and vocal instruction at all levels has continued, following social distancing guidelines. In lieu of winter concerts this year, the Fine and Performing Arts Department created a virtual holiday arts gallery featuring student performances from elementary and secondary musicians. Three Massapequa High School student-musicians were selected to the 2021 New York State School Music Association’s virtual AllState festival.

Recognizing that Sal’s Place and other local businesses were facing severe hardships brought on by the COVID-19 economic crisis, Chris began raising money to help keep the doors open. Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need. If you are interested in volunteering with Hope House Ministries individually or with a group, here are just some of the areas you can do so: Office Work, Cooking, Photography, Transportation for Residents, Maintenance, Gardening/Farming/ Grounds Keeping, Transportation for Furniture/Donation Pick Up. for you or your group to volunteer! Additionally, you can donate at any time to Hope House Ministries. The idea of non-profits asking for donations can become stale and repetitive, but it really is so important for us to give financially to non-profits that rely a large amount on donations instead of grant money. Here’s two reasons why you may want to consider giving to this organization: What if this was personal? Imagine your son or daughter, your grandchildren, your own brother or sister, or parent experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental health issues, domestic violence or severe depression. Imagine your family torn apart by circumstances out of your control. If you were connected to a crisis situation you would be very comforted to know that an entire community of supporters have made it possible for your loved one to find professional help and healing free of charge. So consider joining that network of support and be a part of the Hope House Ministries’ family. All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! This includes housing, supportive professional services, counseling, healthcare, insurance, transportation, food, clothing and opportunities for education both for both high school, college or trade school. When explained to those new to their agency, few believe it possible. Many question how they are able to stay open. The answer is best left to the words of one of our alumni, “Hope House is truly a miracle. And that miracle is healing.” Simply put, your contributions make this miracle happen. Speaking of programs, later this month, J.P. Scarisbrick will be hosting our Virtual Wine Tasting. It appears that this will be a great program for our Chamber, and an exciting fundraiser to hold. I hope that all participants will have a great time at this event.

We are looking to have a Fall Craft Fair chaired by Robin Hepworth, and Trade Show Expo in September chaired by Robert Zabbia. We are also still planning for our Annual Street Festival in August. The Street Festival has some current limitations from the CDC and other local guidelines that Tony Ventiera is trying to work out. We will keep all apprised as the date gets closer. Patty Orzano has been working on getting our benches placed in the community for residents to be able to relax and sit within the area if they are walking or just want to get some air. The benches will soon be placed, and will enhance our community big time! Past President Denis Monette is working on a Safety Program involving life jackets and other giveaways. This seems very worthwhile. You may contact Shelley at the office for information on this program. Please take a moment to review our newly designed website, and give Loren Wildes at Bar Harbor Web Design a call if you need your own site upgraded. My thanks to Maria Guzzetta and Francesca Zeltmann for their Fitness Fundraiser that they ran for the Chamber at Orangetheory Fitness. This netted $500.00 for the Chamber. The last piece of my message highlights two of our current Board Members. Past President Phyllis Doria has been involved with the Chamber for a very long time and is always there to assist as needed. No job is too big or too small for Phyllis. Her dedication is second-to-none when it comes to the Chamber. I value her friendship and dedication to the Chamber, and look forward to her continued service. Stephen Parmiter has been on the Board for some three years, and is a valued and wise member of the Board. His advice on all money matters and programs is considered very important, and he brings a great dimension to the Board with his experience as a Wealth Manager with Morgan Stanley. I look for his advice on many matters, and when I call upon him to assist, he never says no. I look forward to all good things from Steve on our Board as the time goes by. That’s it for now!

Shortly after graduating college 33 years ago, Vivian was diagnosed with systemic lupus - an inflammatory disease in which the immune system attacks its own tissue. The disease commonly affects a patient’s joints, skin and kidneys. Vivian was an elementary school teacher in New York City until five years ago, when

her kidneys began to fail. Soon thereafter, she began dialysis treatments. Due to the extensive strain dialysis places on human body and the lengthy wait time for a deceased donor, a living donor represents Vivian’s best chance for surviving and thriving. However, it can be challenging to find willing living donors, and New York State in general has historically been one of the worst states for organ donor registration - a place where the most patients are waiting for the fewest organs. Vivian, who has Type A blood, can receive a transplant from living donors with either A or O-type blood. Massapequa Schools Raise Autism Awareness Elementary schools in the Massapequa School District celebrated everyone’s unique qualities for Autism Awareness Month in April while also educating students about the disorder that affects an estimated 1 in 54 children nationwide. On April 30 at McKenna Elementary School, administrators, teachers and staff wore shirts with an image of a puzzle piece and a heart along with the message, “Love Needs No Words.” The puzzle piece is the symbol used to represent the mystery and complexity of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Throughout April, first graders in Melanie Kane’s class discussed how everyone is special because of their differences. Students

identified the traits that make them unique and learned the importance of accepting others for who they are. They ended the month with an autism awareness coloring activity to serve as a visual reminder of those important messages. Fairfield Elementary School took part in the international Light It Up Blue campaign for autism awareness, with students and staff encouraged to wear blue on World Autism Day. The school also raised money for the Nassau Suffolk Chapter of the Autism Society of America. Families and staff members could contribute decorated puzzles pieces, which were hung throughout Fairfield’s hallways, and make a small donation.

The school received raffle baskets donated by teachers and local businesses, which also served as a fundraiser for the organization, which works to assist families in finding support groups and social, recreational and educational opportunities for children with autism. Second grade teacher Jennifer Lidonnici coordinated the fundraising efforts at Fairfield and doubled the donation by personally matching money raised from the puzzle pieces and raffles. Students from Ms. Lidonnici’s class gave facts about autism during the daily morning announcements and members of the SADD club made informational posters.

To celebrate the Class of 2021, the halls of Massapequa High School have been covered in colorful, handmade banners, just one of several spirit activities planned for the end of the school year. The goal was to bring joy to seniors in a year when many traditional activities were either canceled or modified due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Banners, many featuring Massapequa blue and gold, were made by students from the sophomore and junior classes, as well as by teachers, staff and student clubs. Seniors say

the gesture means a lot to them. “It’s really nice and it livens up the halls,” Isabella DeLuso said. “We’re very appreciative of it,” added Kathryn Castoria. “The school is trying to do everything that they can to show they care about us.” Senior class President Jack Devenish noted that the signs “light up the school” and make the seniors feel special during a year in which they have dealt with many restrictions. “This is finally giving the seniors that feeling

that this is our time to shine,” he said. “I’m glad that we’re beginning to honor our class in new and creative ways like this.” Following the lead of the Class of 2020, members of this year’s senior class continued the spirit doors initiative. Seniors were encouraged to decorate the front doors of their homes, celebrating their time at Massapequa High School as well as their future plans. sometimes be taken for granted. Here are some practical tips to help customers stay safe: Do not handle electric appliances with wet or damp hands, and never use electric appliances in wet or damp conditions, unless the appliances are specifically rated for that use. If there are small children or pets around, make sure unused wall

outlets have safety coverings. All outlets within reach should be protected with plastic closures that fit snugly and cannot be removed easily. Inspect all appliances and extension cords regularly to ensure that they are in good condition. Cords should not be frayed or damaged. Ensure that cords do not run under rugs or have furniture

resting on them. Never pour water on an electric fire, as water acts as a conductor and can cause shock. A fire extinguisher rated “Class C” should be used for electric fires. Install smoke detectors on the ceiling away from air vents and near bedrooms. Test smoke detectors every few months to ensure they’re working, and change the batteries
