There is a vast array of visual arts courses, for students entering grades 3-12, including ceramic glazing and design, drawing and painting, decorative arts, fashion design, fiber arts, mixed media, printmaking, sculpture and watercolor techniques. The jewelry class is being revamped as students will now be making jewelry that they design themselves. The iPad Claymation course will be offered in beginner and intermediate levels. New camps include mosaic art and tie-dye crafts. Musical theater kicks off with a four-day theater boot camp for students entering grades 8-12 that focuses on the audition process. After that, there will be back-to-back two-week musical theater workshops, for grades 4-12, each culminating with a group production. “We’re trying to branch
out to expand our offerings to our youngest students and to provide our oldest students with some camps that are just for them,” said Jessica Wyman, coordinator of the Summer Fine Arts camp. The program runs from July 5 to Aug. 5. Camps are open to any student living within the Massapequa School District. All classes will be held in air conditioned spaces at Massapequa High School, and will be taught by certified teachers with support from college and high school level student assistants. Each camp concludes with an in-person performance or art exhibit for families. Assemblyman Durso To Hold A Free Narcan Training Event New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso, in coordination with the Village of Massapequa Park, and the NYS Office of Addiction Services & Support (OASAS), will be holding a Free Narcan Training Event on Thursday, May 19, 2022 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Massapequa Park Village Hall. This program will be presented by a NYS OASAS
opioid overdose training specialist and will include an opiate informational presentation, overdose risk factors, recognizing and responding to an overdose, and administration of Naloxone (Narcan). Online registration for the Massapequa School District’s Summer Fine Arts program begins on Tuesday, May 24 at 9 a.m. There are several new camps this year, in addition to longstanding music, art and theater courses. Beginner and intermediate band and orchestra lessons are back, with a pair of twoweek sessions for students in grades 4 and up. Other staples of the summer music program include acoustic guitar lessons, jazz band, rock orchestra, an Irish music workshop and a ukulele course. There are several new music offerings, including a two-week recording technology class, in which each student can create and record a song. Middle school and high school musicians can enjoy a songwriting course and rock band. For the first time, there is a camp for younger students, with a four-day rhythm rockers class for children entering

During this year’s Pick a Reading Partner program at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, students not only pushed to meet their own reading goals, but they also thought about the literary needs of others. This year’s PARP them was “Spread Reading Love with Acts of Kindness,” and students did just that by
collecting 1,974 books to donate to the Book Fairies. The nonprofit organization collects reading material for people in need through the metropolitan New York region. Its goal is to nurture a love of reading across all age groups. The book drive was spearheaded by student government, under the direction of teachers Kelsey Downey and Marissa
Spalletta. They set up a bin in the lobby, which was almost always full thanks to their promotion efforts. Students and staff were encouraged to donate new or gently used reading materials including books for toddlers, children and young adults. The Book Fairies visited the school on April 12 to pick up the donations, which filled numerous boxes.

The Charity of the Month for May is
Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The primary mission of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk), is to promote selfsufficiency among low-income families and individuals. Most of their programming is devoted to revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need.
As defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “developmental disabilities” are a group of conditions arising from an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. These conditions typically begin during a young child’s developmental period, may impact day-to-day functioning, and usually last throughout a person’s lifetime. EOC of Suffolk offers a comprehensive array of services for people with developmental disabilities aimed at enhancing their quality of life. Its specially trained staff will customize a program to help maximize each person’s ability to live with independence and self-sufficiency. In addition, personalized case management helps to ensure that individuals receive the government benefits to which they are eligible. The overall offering has six components: Community Habilitation Services: Under this program, EOC of Suffolk provides individuals with support and services that focus on developing life skills and community integration.
Respite Services: EOC of Suffolk provides temporary relief from the demands of caregiving, helping to reduce overall family stress. The program helps families provide uninterrupted care for their loved one with a developmental disability. Respite/Recreation: This service component provides educational, occupational and recreational activities, as well as opportunities to increase socialization skills. Services take place on-site as well as on field trips to help enrich the learning process. Self-Directed and Fiscal Intermediary Services: This program empowers individuals to exercise the maximum amount of control over the types of support and services they wish to receive. They also have a voice in the selection of providers and in how services are provided. Working with employers and funding agencies, people with developmental disabilities can engage as full citizens in communities of their choosing. EOC of Suffolk can also arrange for the services of a Fiscal Intermediary for individuals who have chosen self-direction – supplemented by administrative and billing support. Group Day Habilitation Services: Fortunately, having a developmental disability doesn’t preclude one from becoming an involved, contributing member of society. This will suffice for the June meeting as well.

There was some sad news in the community with some of our members recently as Councilman Thomas Hand lost his Mother Carolyn and Tobay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato and his wife Jennifer lost Jen’s Mother Esther and Amy Recco of Friends for Life lost her Mom Sharon as well. This all happened within days of each other and I ask all to keep the people mentioned and their families in their prayers. We all know how it feels to lose someone close and we ask all to pray for their strength at this time. Finally, do not forget to go to Field of Dreams and look at the new Chamber welcoming sign at the corner of County Line and Merrick Road. It looks great and our thanks to Past President Patty Orzano and the Town Supervisor Joe Saladino for getting this done.

CASJ is a not-for-profit organization that fosters improved health and quality-of-life for Long Islanders impacted by drug use, incarceration,

Retiring Early According to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents
indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many
working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

Chapter to recognize the Association of Fire Districts of Nassau County as they prepared to ship 4,000lbs of medical supplies to the frontlines in Ukraine. The 20ft shipping container
full of necessary supplies is being transported by the Terry Farrell Foundation to a local port, and will reach the people of Ukraine through the Association’s partnership with St.
Vladimir’s Parish Center in Uniondale. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The volunteer fire service is dedicated to protecting people’s lives and property, and their
sense of service is what made our volunteers step up to assist Ukrainians fighting to protect their homeland. I thank our firefighters and EMS workers for their service to our nation, and to the cause of freedom around the globe.” In mid-March, the Town initiated its own collection drive which resulted in 7,000lbs – the largest collection on Long Island – of supplies being successfully collected and shipped to Ukraine to be distributed to those in need. Ralph Raymond, North Massapequa Fire Commissioner and President of the Association of Fire Districts of Nassau County, said, “Every day we see the horrific situation in Ukraine getting worse and worse. But the outpouring of support and overwhelming generosity of our firefighters in Nassau County has only grown stronger.
