All News is Good News News from the Nest is giving fifth-graders at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District and opportunity to learn about broadcast journalism. Students record daily news broadcasts with information such as the weather, student and staff birthdays, the lunch menu, fun facts and announcements about upcoming events. Using green screen technology,

the students can choose any background to make it look like they are reporting from a remote location instead of a classroom. Some spots have included the surface of the sun, under the sea and in front of the White House. For the Pledge of Allegiance, the background changes to the American flag. All fifth-graders are given an opportunity to participate, and each pair of reporters does a week’s

worth of shows. They gather the information, write the scripts and film each day before school as computer teacher assistant Susan Corrado records on an iPad. I have had my fair share of dining adventures through the years, most of which have since been reflected upon with a degree of amusement in hindsight. At the time, however, well let’s just say there are moments when our entire eating experience seemed to be part of a rather lengthy segment of Candid Camera. There was the time, while up in Saratoga Springs one summer years ago, that our meal was interrupted by a rather persistent fly. Upon swatting said flying creature, he began a free-fall into what had been - up to that point - a rather enjoyable pasta entree of my mother’s. As she watched, horrified, the formerly agile winged critter began what appeared to be a slow dog paddle through the sauce. Both my father and I were in complete hysterics by this point. When the waiter stopped by the table to check on whether we were enjoying the meal, my mother pointed to the at this point - motionless fly and replied, “Well, I was enjoying it very much, but…” The waiter, without missing a beat, shrugged

and remarked, “Oh yeah, that happens a lot - summer and all.” No offer of a replacement, no sympathy for the ruined meal, no nothing. The customer is always right, indeed. Of course, there are times when the customer seems obliged to seat him/herself, place the order and perhaps even head back into the kitchen to cook it as well, such is the poor quality of service. On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve been witness to a waitress literally sweeping a plate out from under my friend’s poised fork, determining that she was, in fact, finished. As we sat, incredulous over this turn of events, we didn’t know whether to laugh or demand a refund. After about two hours of nursing our drinks and “contemplating” dessert, more appetizers, perhaps a breakfast course… we decided to take the check. Oddly enough, the waitress didn’t seem amused. Fast forward to this past Cinco de Mayo, a “holiday” I have never made a special point to celebrate

aside from perhaps ordering a taco or two at a take-out restaurant. This year, my friend and I (different friend, same Candid Camera tendencies) decided to wait it out to dine in style at a genuine Mexican establishment on the busiest Saturday night of the year. After about an hour, we were seated. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees, all of which arrived in quick succession. Having already decided what we wanted for dessert, we patiently waited for the waiter to return. And waited…. And waited… Each time he passed our table, all attempts to make eye contact and flag him down went unnoticed. We were, we determined, completely invisible. Nearly an hour later, a random waitress happened to glance our way. Can we order dessert from you? Certainly. Nearly another 30 minutes elapsed before our own waiter, the one who had seemingly abandoned our table, returned. Dessert? We looked at each other. We had now been in this venue for precisely four hours. Cheers, indeed.

Building Community Massapequa High School students became teachers for the day as they visited East Lake Elementary School second-graders on April 18th to talk about communities and financial literacy. The Junior Achievement High School Heroes program is a servicelearning project with interactive lessons on community decisionmaking, entrepreneurship, banking and taxation, and giving high school students an opportunity to serve as role models for younger

peers. The second-graders, who study communities as part of their social studies curriculum, learned how different professions exist within a community to create a local economy and support system. High school students led their younger peers in a variety of handson activities. In a lesson that taught them about assembly line versus unit production, the secondgraders worked in groups to make paper doughnuts. They had to create as many as they could in three

minutes, without defects, to sell. The high school students were trained by Denise DeLury, the district’s school to career coordinator, and Lorraine Englander, a program manager with Junior Achievement. Ms. DeLury said that many of the participating students are interested in careers in education and High School Heroes gave them an opportunity to practice lesson planning and classroom management.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school

drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual “Day at the Races,” which will be on June 8th at Belmont Racetrack. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, “Par Fore the Horse,” will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. Both of these events have sponsorship opportunities and are open to the public (tickets must be purchased). www.GOTRLongIsland.org Girls on the Run is an empowerment program for girls in third through eighth grade that inspires them to be joyful, healthy and confident, while using a fun, interactive curriculum that creatively integrates running. Meeting twice a week in small teams for the 10-week season, volunteer coaches teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. Their Spring 5K will take place on June 2nd at Hofstra University. They are in need of volunteer coaches (no running experience is required) who have a desire to make an impact on the lives of young girls. All training is provided. They also need volunteers to help out at their upcoming 5K in the areas of: registration, hospitality, pre-run fun and course cheer. Children learned about the four types of fossils: cast, mold, trace and true form. They used plastic dinosaur toys to make impressions in clay and replicate each type of fossil.

Fifth-graders in the Massapequa School District prepared for their upcoming move to Berner Middle School by getting advice from the people who experienced that transition just a year or two ago. During their library periods, the soon-tobe elementary school graduates participated in

videoconferences with Berner students. The face-to-face interaction is just one way they get an introduction to middle school. The fifth-graders were also invited to a club and intramural fair in April. The videoconferences were coordinated by the middle and elementary

school library media specialists. Each session last about a half-hour, giving fifth-graders plenty of time to ask questions about their future school. Common topics included lockers, the middle school schedule and classes, extracurricular offerings, and what time to be at the bus stop in the morning.

Taking the Cake Three Massapequa High School students were grand prizewinners in the “Let Them Eat Cake” challenge hosted by Long Island Family and Consumer Sciences Professionals. Junior Emily Harris and sophomores Angela Grippi and Danielle Pearson spent weeks working on their cake, “Bon Voyage,” in their creative foods class with teacher Christina Sabbiondo. Each creation had to have a theme and an event it would be served at. The girls decided to make a cake for someone who would leaving to study abroad and would be having a going-away party.

The bottom layer was a suitcase, the middle layer a textbook and the top layer a globe. All students in Ms. Sabbiondo’s classes baked cakes, and two were entered into the competition. Emily, Angela and Danielle said they were surprised that their cake was submitted because of the creativity of their classmates. They tied for the grand prize with a group from another Long Island high school and received a small cash prize. “They put in so much effort and were rewarded for their hard work,” Ms. Sabbiondo said. “The cake was a really awesome and

very creative. The girls said that making the cake required a multiple-step process to ensure that it would be fresh. They made the decorations first, then the butter cream frosting and fondant, and finally the yellow cake. Success required not only making a plan and following it, but also being about to make quick adjustments. The students said the project required patience, organization and an ability to think on their feet. In the spirit of “Let Them Eat Cake,” all the confections were put out in the main office for staff and students to enjoy.

Q&U Unite

With the exception of a few short words, Q is always paired with U. Kindergartners at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District celebrated the unification of the two letters with a Q and U wedding. Each class hosted its own wedding ceremony in the auditorium, with

students serving as the bride and groom, officiant, ring bearer, flower girl and guests. The ceremonies included songs and poetry readings. Parents also attended and enjoyed juice, cupcakes and Q and U shaped cookies with their children at receptions, which followed in the classrooms. Kindergarten teachers

said the activity was a fun way to support literacy development, which focuses on the recognition of letters and sounds. The students also created projects to celebrate the marriage, such as depictions of Q and U’s children, with names like Quentin, Quinn and Quincey.
