The Museum Of American Armor Will Field An Education Day For Long Island’s High School Students That Connects History To Headlines
Stating that today’s headlines about Russia’s war on Ukraine were written some 80 years ago as a grim legacy of World War II, the Museum of American Armor, the Long Island Living History Association (LILHA) and Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation & Museums will conduct a joint educational field program that will allow thousands of Long Island high school students to strengthen their understanding of World War II and the shadow it continues to cast nearly a century later. The event will be held on Friday, May 13th, and preregistration is now open to social studies classes across Long Island. The program integrates classroom curriculum with operational armor, military
field tactics, and mock small arms in open woods reminiscent of World War II France. Lawrence Kadish, president and founder of the museum, said, “There has been a deliberate reduction in class time assigned to teaching history, and World War II in particular. As a result, many students have no context for what the world is seeing in Ukraine and how Putin is repeating Hitler’s playbook almost to the letter. We need to appreciate that today’s headlines were written by history and this program seeks to address that.” Gloria Sesso, the Armor Museum’s education coordinator and copresident of the Long Island Council for the Social Studies, explained, “This program creates an immersion program for
students that integrates classroom study guides with an extraordinary field experience. As the classroom returns to normal following COVID this program regains the ability to tell the story of World War II, its legacy,
and why the chilling scenes we are seeing in Ukraine are yet another chapter written by that conflict.” Dr. Libby O’Connell, History Channel Chief Historian Emeritus and Chairperson of the NYC World War I Centennial
Commission, said, “This day-long program has the means to become a statewide model for field trips that place students in a period of time that remains a pivotal moment in world history. Those school districts that participate

Residents are invited to nominate extraordinary individuals who have made a difference in our veteran communities. “The Town of Oyster Bay’s ‘Salute to America’ Celebration provides the ideal backdrop to recognize veterans and individuals who continue to actively serve in the community and advocate for issues and concerns relative to veterans. The Town is proud to recognize and honor amazing individuals who have helped to shape our communities for the better

First Annual DFQ 22 Mile Duathlon To Be Held May 21 On May 21, 2022 Project9line will host the First Annual DFQ 22 Mile Duathlon at Veterans Memorial Park in Calverton, New York. This first of its kind duathlon will consist of a 9 mile run, followed by a 9 mile ruck and concluding with a 4 mile run. Anyone is able to participate, whether or not you have served our country. For veterans, the transition to civilian life can be extremely difficult, as they tend to go from structure and routine to a lifestyle that is much less rigid. Additionally, the camaraderie they once had may be quickly depleted once they find themselves going through life as a regular civilian. The unfortunate truth is that around 20 veterans a day commit suicide. The 9 mile run is dedicated to those members of the armed services that we’ve
lost in combat. The 9 mile ruck is to remember those lost to suicide. The final 4 mile run is dedicated to each runner, so they can celebrate their achievements and reflect on some things they have not quit on. As a non-profit organization, Project9line supports veterans by providing avenues for them to communicate their experiences and express themselves through the arts and activities. This 22 Mile Duathlon is a way for them to show that they will never quit supporting the troops and our veterans, and it will start at precisely 7:12am to honor a veteran who committed suicide on July 12, 2011. If you are looking to participate, you can register online up until May 20, 2022 for $150. If you want to participate, but need the funds to do so, there is a fundraising option that
you can choose online when registering, which allows you to register for $0, however you will need to fundraise a minimum of $450 by May 21, 2022. Each participant will receive a race medal, long sleeve shirt and a windbreaker. The first male and first female to finish the duathlon will also receive a DFQ Championship Belt. Additionally, there will be a “Veteran Service Organization Village” at the event, consisting of various booths occupied by organizations that help veterans. PSEG Long Island Reminds You To Call 811 Before You Dig
SEG Long Island reminds customers, contractors and excavators to always call 811 before digging to ensure underground pipelines, conduits, wires and cables are properly marked out. Every digging project, even a small project like planting a tree or building a deck, requires a call to 811. It’s the law. The call is free and the mark-out service is free. The call must be made whether the job is being performed by a professional or a doit-yourselfer. Striking an underground electrical line can cause serious injury and outages, and result in repair costs and fines. “Spring’s warmer temperatures make it a perfect time for starting improvements to our homes and businesses. Calling 811 ahead of time helps protect underground utility lines and, more importantly, the safety of anyone digging,” said Michael Sullivan, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “We are glad to see that our customers are getting the message. Last year there were more than 240,000 mark-out requests in our service area, and so far this year, there have been more than 48,000 requests to 811.” According to Common Ground Alliance, a member-driven association of nearly 1,800 individuals and 250 member companies in every facet of the underground utility industry, 40% of active diggers in North America do not call 811 because they think their project is too shallow to require it. All digging projects require a call to 811.
A free call to 811 in the service area automatically connects the caller to the local New York one-call center, which collects information about digging projects. The one-call center then provides the information to the utility companies, which send representatives to mark the locations of nearby underground lines with flags, paint or both. Once lines have been properly marked and confirmation from all of the utility owners is received, projects may proceed as long as caution is used around the marked areas. Here’s important information to consider: · Calling 811 before digging reduces the chances of damaging an underground line to less than 1%. · Underground gas and electric lines are everywhere, even on private properties. These facilities can be easily damaged if dug into, with the potential to cause serious injuries. Digging into these lines can also disrupt vital utility services, resulting in costly delays, expensive repairs and environmental or property damage. Whether the job is a major home improvement project or something as simple as a fence or mailbox post, a call to 811 must be placed beforehand to determine where it’s safe to dig. Call 811 at least two business days before the commencement of each job to have underground pipes, wires and equipment located. Each facility owner must respond by providing the excavator with a positive confirmation indicating that marks are in place where utility lines are

They have made a major impact on local education through their contributions to student leadership programs, drug prevention and intervention, mental health awareness, wellness and aftercare, and programs that teach good citizenship, acceptance and kindness. One place Massapequa Kiwanis has made a significant difference is at Nassau BOCES Carman Road School for the physically and developmentally challenged. These systems are complex, and homeowners who intend to do some DIY electrical work should familiarize themselves with their home electrical systems prior to beginning any work. The ESFI notes that knowledge of their home electrical systems can help homeowners more safely navigate them and make maintenance easier.
• Honestly assess your skills. An honest assessment of skills is absolutely necessary prior to working on an electrical system. According to the National Safety Council, injuries relating to electrical incidents typically fall into one of four categories: electrical shock, electrocution, falls, and burns. Each of these injuries is significant. For example, electric shock, which occurs when electrical current passes over or through a person’s body, involves burns, abnormal heart rhythm and unconsciousness. Given the potential for serious injury, the ESFI urges homeowners to make an honest assessment of their skills before they begin working on their home’s electrical systems. Little or no experience working with electrical systems should be considered a significant hurdle to any DIY project. • Turn the power off. It’s essential that the power to the circuit that will be worked on be turned off prior to starting any work. This can be accomplished by switching off the circuit breaker in the main service panel. Similarly, when working on appliances or lamps, make sure the products are unplugged prior to working on them. • Do not touch plumbing or gas pipes when doing electrical work. The experts at the Indiana Electric Cooperative note that the risk for electrocution is significant when water comes in contact with electricity. It’s imperative that homeowners do not touch plumbing and gas pipes when performing a DIY electrical project. Professionals know how to work around such pipes while minimizing their risk for electric shock or worse, and homeowners must familiarize themselves with the techniques professionals rely on to stay safe if they intend to begin DIY electrical projects. Homeowners are best served by leaving electrical work to the professionals. However, those who insist on doing such work themselves should do their homework and get to know their systems and safety protocols prior to beginning a project.

Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk) is a Patchoguebased non-profit organization that promotes selfsufficiency among low-income families and individuals by revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need.
As a HUD-approved housing counseling agency, EOC of Suffolk offers a comprehensive array of housing services. Its “Mortgage Default and Foreclosure Prevention Counseling” program provides mortgage counseling for homeowners island-wide who are having difficulty maintaining their mortgage. Many households across the country and across Long Island confront the risk of foreclosure. Last month, foreclosure filings nationwide reached the highest level since the pandemic began in March 2020. More than 30 thousand properties across the U.S. faced foreclosure, a 181 percent jump from March 2021 and a 29 percent increase from February. It was recently reported that about 14,500 Long Island homeowners were at least three months behind on paying their mortgages. The risk of foreclosure has increased when a statewide foreclosure moratorium expired in January.
EOC of Suffolk also offers “Comprehensive Housing Counseling” that helps individuals and families achieve their dream of homeownership. The program provides one-to-one homeownership counseling and group counseling, as well as budget and credit counseling. Finally, the organization also helps current and prospective homeowners through an online, eight-hour “Homebuyer Education Course.” The course helps enrollees determine if homeownership is right for them, how to shop for a home and how to maintain a home. Those completing the course receive a certificate that positions homebuyers to fulfill education requirements for down payment assistance programs. The certificate can also be presented to lenders. The course operates on a convenient and flexible timetable allowing participants to complete it on their own schedule. Town Launches New ‘Art In The Park’ Initiative Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson invites local artists to participate in the Town’s new ‘Art in the Park’ program, which invites artists and artisans to display and sell their hand-crafted goods. Applications are now available for the event which will be held on Saturday, May 21st at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park & Beach in Oyster Bay. “We are calling on all local artists and artisans to fill out an application today to take part in
this great opportunity to showcase their items,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “The free event on May 21st will also feature live music, food trucks and activities for kids, making it a fun day for the whole family.” Participants must be 18 or older, and display and sell only their original pieces. No commercial or mass-produced items are permitted. Artists must supply their own 10x10 canopy and additional items required for their space. Additional details and associated costs

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh today announced the launch of a new poster contest open to 5th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. The theme of the poster contest is bike safety. “Many residents have shared their concerns about bike safety here in the Town of Oyster Bay with us, as drivers and youngsters alike are often unsure of safe biking practices,” Supervisor Saladino said. “We launched this
poster contest to begin increasing awareness of bike safety guidelines in our community, especially as we celebrate National Bike Month this May and spend more time in the outdoors as summer approaches.” To enter the contest, students must digitally design or draw a picture that illustrates safe bike riding. The poster must also include simple language about New York State Guidelines for bike safety, which are available online at https://tinyurl. com/bikesafeny. The top
three winning posters will be unveiled to the public during an official meeting of the Oyster Bay Town Board, showcased in winners’ hometowns, and featured in a town-wide newsletter. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Town Clerk Richard LaMarca and Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato joined with Biltmore Shores Civic Association in celebrating the grand opening of Alhambra Park in Massapequa. Alhambra Park had previously been a scenic waterfront location enjoyed by local residents that was devastated by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Through the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery (GOSR), the Town secured more than $4 million in State funds to restore and improve the facility, including measures to mitigate flooding, create better recreational access and provide overall beautification. “Alhambra Park has long been a favorite
destination for residents of our south shore and the overall experience will now be better than before,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Through federal funding, we were able to mitigate flooding and provide for water quality improvements while bringing a facelift to the park and improving its overall appeal. Whether you enjoy a picnic, kayaking or walking on the boardwalk, Alhambra Park will be a favorite destination for this neighborhood.” Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery Katie Brennan said, “Alhambra Park is one of Oyster Bay’s most valuable community assets as it provides both opportunities for recreation and helps
mitigate flooding.” Improvements to Alhambra Park included installation of new bulkhead, drainage improvements and installation of green infrastructure to reduce flooding. The design of the facility uses bio-retention areas to naturally treat and filter stormwater runoff, thereby removing pollutants from the water prior to its return to our aquifers. The park also features access to the South Shore Blueway Trail with a kayak and canoe launching area. To further enhance safety and security, security cameras will be placed on site and a timber floating dock is being installed for use by the Town’s Bay Constables and the Nassau County Police Department Marine Bureau.
Town Collects And Delivers Continued From 26 weeks and ran through April 15th. The drive focused on collecting food for our residents’ pets through Baxter’s Pet Pantry, which supplies free pet food
and supplies to petowning families in need. Town officials recognized residents for their generosity in donating over 303lbs of pet food and supplies, which
