Despite the challenges students and staff have faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic, musicians and teachers at Plainedge Public Schools have continued to thrive without missing a beat. The music department has been recognized with a number of honors and accolades throughout the 2020-2021 school year. Plainedge Public

Schools has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education Award from the NAMM Foundation. The NAMM Foundation recognizes communities for outstanding efforts of teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders for making music part of a well-rounded education. To qualify for the

designation, Plainedge Public Schools answered questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Other musical high notes for the Plainedge Music Department this year included the attendance of 130 students

at the New York State School Music Association Solo Festival. Students were given a performance evaluation of a graded solo from the NYSSMA Manual, playing scales and sight reading. For the first time in 11 years, two Plainedge students were accepted into NYSSMA All-Eastern. Two students were also selected for NYSSMA

All-State this school year, while 55 students participated in NYSSMA All-County. Three Plainedge students took part in The Long Island String Festival Association Festival earlier this year. Three band students also had the opportunity to participate in the New York State Band Directors Festival.

With the start of spring, Plainedge musicians will continue to have opportunities to perform and showcase their skills. With all health and safety protocols and guidelines in place, Plainedge will be hosting in-person concerts at the high school for musicians across all grade levels.

Hope House Ministries is a non-proﬁt organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. Their mission is founded in the spirit of St. Louis de Montfort, who had a commitment to the poor and the courage to do what no one else had the courage to do. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal ﬁnancial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. Hope House Ministries was founded by Fr. Francis Pizzarelli, SMM, LCSW-R, ACSW, DCSW. 41 years ago, Fr. Francis discovered hundreds of youth who were homeless, experiencing mental health issues and living with addictions and it wasn’t long before he realized that neither government nor faith communities were doing enough to meet the crisis of homelessness. He formed Hope House Ministries and it has grown into an amazing organization that has provided for the needs of over 500,000 individuals. Hope House Ministries offers

many programs, such as their Community House, Hope Academy, Montfort Therapeutic Residence, Pax Christi Hospitality Center, St. Maximillian Kolbe Outpatient Addictions Treatment Center, Wisdom House and much more. If you are homeless and in need of shelter, hungry and cannot afford food, are homeless and think you may have a mental illness, are homeless and are HIV Positive, are a homeless Vet, are a woman seeking safety from an abusive relationship, seeking professional counseling for yourself or a friend, have an addiction and need help, seeking professional help with parenting your child, are seeking prayer for a challenging issue or need to speak to a person about a mental health crisis you are having, Hope House Ministries can assist you in getting help in 3 easy steps. Plainedge High School’s Class Of 2021 Valedictorian And Salutatorian

Plainedge High School is proud to announce that Joseph Devlin and Tyler Ruvolo are the valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, of the Class of 2021. Devlin is a well-rounded student with recognitions of excellence in various classes, including Algebra II Honors, Chemistry Honors, AP English Language, AP Physics and College Spanish IV. Due to his impressive scores on the AP Exams and the Preliminary SAT, he earned the National AP Scholar Award and was named a National Merit Commended Student. Devlin has been a dedicated member of Quiz Bowl since his freshman year, and he is currently serving as president. He has also displayed leadership in his role as team captain of the school’s National Science Bowl team. This year, the team earned fourth place

at the Long Island Regional Competition. Devlin is a cellist in the Chamber Orchestra, as well as a member of the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society and Science Honor Society. Along with these extracurriculars, Devlin was enrolled in the Crystallography Training Program and the SPARK Summer Program at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. He completed research at the lab, as well, performing an independent spectroscopy experiment at the National Synchrotron Light Source II. Devlin plans to major in physics at Cornell University. Ruvolo’s recognition as a National Merit Commended Student and a National AP Scholar with Distinction are testaments to his notable academic achievements. He has also been included in High Honor Roll since sixth grade. This year, he was

recognized as one of the top 300 scholars in the Regeneron Science Talent Search competition. He was selected out of 1,760 applications nationwide for his project, “A RegressionBased Investigation Into Presidential Public Approval as a Factor of Political and Economic Policy.” Ruvolo demonstrates responsibility and leadership through his roles in multiple school clubs. He is co-editorin-chief of the school newspaper, president and captain of the Ethics Bowl team, and vice president of the Quiz Bowl team. Additionally, Ruvolo has volunteered as a tutor for middle school students since 10th grade. During this past summer, he took part in the LIU Summer Honors Institute. He has not committed on a college yet but plans to major in economics.

Donning the attire of their future colleges, seven student athletes from Massapequa High School made their plans official at a signing celebration on April 22. They were joined by their parents for the special occasion, as well as Principal Barbara Lowell and Director of Physical Education, Health, Athletics and Recreation John Piropato. The group will join collegiate teams in New

York and Connecticut. From the girls soccer team, Kaitlyn Kilmeade will play for Union College, while Caroline Brucato and Amanda DeVito will both head to Mount Saint Mary College. Sean Wilde will join the cross-country team at Molloy College and Vincent Simonetti plans to run for both the track and cross-country teams at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Timothy Dolan

will play baseball for the University of Bridgeport and Lucia Gargiulo will play softball for Utica College. Ms. Lowell, in her congratulatory remarks to students, said this year’s senior athletes truly embody perseverance and resilience. She wished them well in their postChiefs careers and also thanked the parents for their commitment and dedication.

Town Launches First Student & Faculty Saliva-Based COVID Testing Site bring normalcy back to the everyday lives of our children and families.” On Tuesday, April 20th, the Oyster Bay Town Board awarded a competitively bid contract to Pro-Phase Labs so that a greater number of residents have access to accurate and reliable COVID-19 testing, including fast turnaround times. With laboratories in both Garden City, NY and Old Bridge, NJ, ProPhase Labs has the capacity to provide test results to individuals within 24 hours from the time when one of its labs receives and accepts a specimen. In the coming weeks, the Town and ProPhase Labs anticipate an expansion of testing access to the general public. “We are incredibly happy to partner with Supervisor Saladino and the Town in their tremendous efforts to combat this virus and get residents back to ‘normal life’,” said Ted Karkus CEO of ProPhase Labs. “The Town of Oyster Bay joins the growing list of healthcare providers,

organizations and municipalities that have selected ProPhase Labs for their COVID-19 testing needs. Our fast turnaround times and dependable testing solutions continue to be reasons why ProPhase Labs is selected as a testing partner.” Testing will be regularly administered from 2:00pm – 6:00pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and from 10:00am to 1:00pm on Sundays at the Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 W. If a school requires on-site large-scale testing for a graduation ceremony, prom, homecoming or other such event, they must provide 36 hournotice to the Town by emailing rraymond2@ oysterbay-ny.gov so that capacity levels can be increased to accommodate both students and their families.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board announced a new partnership with ProPhase Labs to administer a new, non-invasive saliva-based, viral RT-PCR multiplextest for students and faculty that attend and/or work at public and private schools within the Town. This new saliva-based test is proven to quickly detect and identify COVID-19 and any of its 17+ current viral mutations. ProPhase Labs has the capacity to provide test results to individuals within 24 hours from the time when one of its labs receives and accepts a specimen.
