Massapequa Youth Win Big In Elks Drug Awareness Program Massapequa Elks Honor Local Youth

Massapequa Elks Lodge #2162 recently recognized three Massapequa youth for their artistic and creative work submitted to its Drug Free is Me Poster, Essay and Video Contest. Local youth were awarded First Place in their grade category at the lodge level and their entries were sent to compete at district and New York Elks state level.

Thirty five Massapequa youth participated in the multi-media contest. John O’Fee, an 8th Grade student at Berner Middle School, won First Place at the Massapequa Lodge and NYS levels for his essay regarding a loved one’s personal journey with alcohol. He wrote about how good people often change when they

become addicted to drugs and shared how some who become addicted to drugs will eventually need them to feel normal - like the rest of us need food. He also discussed how the drug Fentanyl can be hidden in illegal drugs with the user not knowing it can be fatal. Samaira Desai, a 4th Grade student attending Fairfield Elementary

School, won First Place at the Massapequa Lodge and Second Place at NYS levels for her vibrant and beautiful picture Fly Like A Free Bird Filled With Joy And Success Don’t Be Caged By Drugs! James O’Hara, a 3rd grade student attending McKenna Elementary School, won First Place at the Massapequa Lodge

Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk), is a nonproﬁt, communitybased organization that was founded in 1967 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “Great Society” legislation.

While most of EOC’s work takes place in Suffolk County, the organization also provides a number of its services in Nassau County. Three of its initiatives that take place in both of those counties are: 1) The Housing Counseling program, which helps individuals and families achieve their dream of homeownership. 2) Its Developmental Disabilities work, which provides a comprehensive array of services for people with developmental disabilities – all aimed at enhancing their quality of life. 3) The Chronic Health Care Coordination program, which helps individuals manage their own physical health, mental health and social needs in a comprehensive manner. Additionally, ﬁve of their many programs offered in Suffolk County include: 1) EOC of Suffolk’s Youth and Adolescent Services, which promotes leadership, healthy decision making, sexual health and pregnancy prevention among local youth. The organization’s after-school programs serve more than 1,000 middle school students daily, providing academic and skill-building activities that promote

2) The Rapid Rehousing Program, which helps individuals and families experiencing homelessness and aims to return them as quickly as possible to permanent housing within their home communities. EOC of Suffolk team members address and troubleshoot barriers to obtaining and maintaining permanent housing. 3) EOC of Suffolk helps keep neighborhood streets safe though its SNUG (GUNS spelled backwards) Violence Prevention program, which functions in cooperation with residents, private industry and communitybased organizations. SNUG helps identify and defuse community “hot spots”. It also provides mentorship and leadership-oriented services to youth who are gang members or who are at risk of joining gangs. 4) The organization’s Targeted Prevention and Supportive Service Program supports people living with HIV/ AIDS. Clients are treated with respect, dignity, privacy and trust. Services include transportation, consumer advice, assistance obtaining beneﬁts, linkages to substance abuse and mental health services, legal services, health education and testing. 5) Recognizing the importance of childcare for working families, EOC of Suffolk owns and operates three childcare learning centers: Way to Grow in East Patchogue, Montauk Childcare Center and a childcare center at the Family Court complex in Central Islip. Those facilities meet the highest standards of early childhood education. Children participate in activities providing intellectual stimulation and fostering self-reliance and social responsibility. Armed Forces Appreciation Day Celebration On May 20th Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced that veterans and active United States military personnel are invited to the Town of Oyster Bay’s Armed Forces Appreciation Day Celebration slated for Friday, May 20th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, located at 7800 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury. This free event, open to all Town of Oyster Bay residents currently or formerly active, will include a BBQ and entertainment by the singing group American Bombshells. “The Town of Oyster

Bay is committed to serving veterans and ensuring they have access to important benefits in which they are entitled to,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This is an important way of thanking our brave hometown heroes for protecting the freedoms we enjoy each and every day as

Americans.” President Harry S. Truman established Armed Forces Appreciation Day in 1950 as a day to pay special tribute to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. This single holiday provides an opportunity for citizens to come together and

thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. The Town’s celebration includes a patriotic musical salute to our hometown heroes, including a special performance by the “American Bombshells,” and a free barbeque. To accommodate as
