Spreading kindness has been the mission of firstgrade students all year at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. The children, who call themselves the “Kind Kids Club,” recently began their latest initiative by creating

kindness rocks. Under the direction of their teachers, children used permanent markers to write positive messages on rocks such as “Kindness is Cool,” “Love Counts” and “Be Friendly.” The children will place the rocks in various places

The fictional-turnedreal game of Quidditch came to Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, as children competed in Harry Potterinspired competitions during their physical education classes. Students throughout the school were divided into four teams or “houses” based on the

popular series: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. They could earn points in their games of Quidditch, which used scoops, hoops and blue and red balls known as pledgers and quaffles. In between rounds, there were Harry Potter trivia questions. Other ways to earn points included finding golden snitches hidden around the

gymnasium and creating team posters with quotes from one of the Harry Potter books. After recording the stories in front of the green screen, students edited their videos on Chromebooks using WeVideo with assistance from library media specialist Jacqueline Lee and technology learning coach Vickie Ahearn. In addition to adding their selected photo to the background, students were able to incorporate title slides, music, sound effects and end credits. Seniors becoming more tech-savvy

Technology is the future, and digital communication has opened many doors for people around the world. Although younger generations have grown up with technology at their ﬁngers, Baby Boomers and older adults did not. But in spite of that, studies show that growing numbers of seniors are open to the idea of technology and even seeking ways to further their use and knowledge.

According to a 2014 study by Pew Research Center, 59 percent of seniors regularly use the internet — a 6 percent increase from the previous study conducted in 2012. Today, 67 percent of adults age 65 and older say they go online. Pew also says that, although seniors consistently have lower rates of technology adoption than the general public, four in 10 seniors now own smartphones, which is more than double the amount that did in 2013. Seniors in Australia are especially tech savvy, as Deloitte’s mobile consumer survey found 78 percent of Australian seniors aged 65 to 75 own a smartphone, up from 69 percent in 2016. While stereotypes have long painted seniors as technologically inept, seniors are actually more socially and digitally

engaged than ever before. Seniors use technology in many different ways. Some use mobile apps to manage medications and doctor’s appointments and monitor their ﬁtness regimens. Some families employ 24/7 alert systems or smarthome technology to keep seniors comfortable and safe at home for as long as possible. Noninvasive, “smart” technology can analyze factors such as whether or not doors are left open, if there has been movement in a home or whether appliances/lights are on or off. This represents a great way for families to stay informed and provide assistance even if they are not nearby. SilverSurfers, a senior-based information website, says other tech that seniors are embracing includes online dating; audio and digital books; online shopping, which is especially valuable to seniors who have mobility issues; and social media, which can keep seniors connected to others and feeling less lonely. A study conducted by researchers from the University of California, San Francisco found 18 percent of American seniors live alone, and 43 percent report feeling lonely on a regular basis. Loneliness can increase death risk. Social media and internet connectivity can be an important tool in helping seniors feel like active members of society. Technology is no longer just for teenagers or active workers. Seniors are increasingly embracing technology and becoming a fast-growing demographic for tech usage.

Of Weddings & Wandering off guard by an impromptu wedding proposal, orchestrated by the boyfriend of one of the featured models. As she stood aghast, he expressed his love and desire to spend the rest of his life with the woman before him, saying he could think of no more appropriate venue to pop the question than on a runway in the midst of bridal week. Judging by the standing ovation delivered by the crowd - among them, the family of the blushing bride-to-be - it seemed he couldn’t have picked a more opportune moment, one they will surely treasure forever. Bridal business aside, we managed to squeeze in some sightseeing on what happened to be one of the warmest days we have been graced with so far this season. From the Flatiron District over to the West Village, we traversed a solid six miles or so of the downtown area, taking in the nuances of each neighborhood and - of

course - finding time to snap some photos along the way. It was during an ill-fated “selfie” attempt in front of the Flatiron Building that a kind woman took pity on us and offered to take the photo, saying, “I know it’s probably taboo to walk up to random strangers and volunteer to take their picture, but you two seemed like you could use a little help.” Why yes, we could indeed. Score one for acts of kindness from fellow tourists. In all, it was a day short on the sort of haphazard adventure which has become the norm with most New York City day trips I have ventured on; actually, quite seamless. It’s funny, the tendency to almost miss the chaos when things go according to plan. I’ll have to remind myself of that irony the next time I’m traipsing 50 blocks out of the way to make a reservation at the third restaurant on the list, while carrying my shoes.

Just last weekend, I was able to satisfy my urge for a little springtime strolling in the city when the opportunity arose to accompany a friend from college to several New York Bridal Fashion Week runway shows. While I was initially far more interested in the aimless wandering aspect of the day, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the experience of attending these avant-garde displays. To the Letter elementary school,” said art teacher Patti Krakoff. “They are creating artwork that tells their individual stories.” Each student begins by cutting out the first letter of his or her first name from a piece of chipboard, twice. Plastic cups go between the two cutouts to make the 3-D sculpture. From there, it is up to each child how to decorate the blank canvas to reflect his or her personality. Ms.

Krakoff said some students are choosing to use paint while others will be using photos and objects to make a collage. The students will be working on their pieces for several weeks, and will get to take it home at the end as a keepsake. Ms. Krakoff said they are following artist “habits of mind” as they develop their craft, envision and imagine, then create, observe and reflect.

Audiences got a taste of Broadway as the drama club at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District presented “Spotlight” on March 23rd. During a morning show for students and two evening shows for families, a cast of approximately 80 fourth- and fifth-graders performed 13 numbers from well-known musicals such as “Annie,” “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” “School of Rock,” “Alice in Wonderland” and “Les Miserables.” The musical-review format may have been a change from prior years,

but the array of high-energy songs and the enthusiasm of the performers made it a can’t-miss show. It was all tied together by student hosts Aedan Fitzsimmons and Brian Rivas, who introduced each number and also entertained the crowds with their joke and witty banter. The show ended with “We’re All in This Together” from “High School Musical.” Performers reveled in their chance to share their musical talents, such as fifth-grader Finn Curley who had a solo in “The Candy Man” and fifthgrader Sofia Maran who

portrayed Veruca Salt in singing “I Want it Now.” “The show gave me an opportunity to face my fear, which is singing in front of a large crowd,” added fourth-grader Giavanna Pizzo. “I decided that performing is something I love and that’s why I did it. It was a great experience.” The show was directed by music teacher Brittany Bissonnette, who was assisted by Kathleen Dyckman and Jessica Wyman. Students from Berner Middle School provided technical support backstage.

Building Bridges As part of their study on ancient civilizations, fifth-graders in Allison Martin’s class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District built suspension bridges. Students learned about the Inca Empire, in which bridges were an integral part of the 15th-

and 16th-century road system. They followed up the history lesson with a STEAM activity, which focuses on skills in science, technology, engineering, the arts and math. The young engineers brought in recycled materials from home such as cardboard, Popsicle sticks, rope, straws and

aluminum foil, and worked in groups to build suspension bridges. The goal was to design a bridge that could withstand the weight of a full water bottle. Community Center Reopens After a fire caused the closure of the original building last winter, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Michele Johnson and Councilman Tom Hand this week joined with senior citizens in celebrating the grand re-opening of the Town community center in North Massapequa. The building, which is home to more than 20 Townoperated programs, is welcoming back recreational programs, senior groups, performing arts workshops, exercise programs, Knights of Pythias and Knights of Columbus, children’s programs, and many more. “The interior of the North Massapequa Community Center was destroyed by fire and many

community organizations were forced to find a temporary home,” said Supervisor Saladino. “After obtaining community input, I’m proud that a major renovation of the North Massapequa Community Center is now complete and the costs of construction were covered by the Town’s insurance policy. We invite community groups to come home and welcome all residents to utilize this wonderful community center.” Over the past several months, the facility had a complete interior refinishing, with reconstruction of all walls and utilities. The twostory structure once again houses meeting rooms, a kitchen and bathroom facilities, as well as office

space. “This location proved to be a convenient location for our residents, particularly the hundreds of senior citizens who enjoy programs here on a weekly basis,” Councilwoman Johnson added. “We are delighted to welcome everyone home to the North Massapequa Community Center.” Councilman Hand added, “Thanks to the diligence of our local fire departments, the exterior structure of this facility remained intact and damage was restricted to the interior. I thank the men and women of the North Massapequa and assisting community fire departments for protecting our residents each and every day.”

Three student-athletes from the boys varsity track and field team at Massapequa High School will take their talents to college. Kevin Cetin, Joe Ryan and Sean Wissman signed their national letters of intent during

a ceremony at the high school on April 12th. Kevin, who participates in the discus, shot put, hammer throw and weight throw events, will attend the University of Connecticut, and Joe will continue with the hammer

throw at Iowa State University. Sean has run the 60-, 100-, 200-, 300and 400-meter races for Massapequa’s track team, and next year will run for University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area.
