Many people are quick to think of growing older in a negative light. Although there certainly are some side effects of aging that one may wish to avoid, people may find that the benefits of growing older outweigh the negatives. Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population. In the United States, the Administration on Aging states that the older population — persons 65 years or older — numbered 46.2 million in 2014 (the latest year for which data is available). Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the first time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old. With so many people living longer, it’s time to

celebrate the perks of getting older rather than the drawbacks. Here are some great beneﬁts to growing old. • Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higher self-esteem climbs. Qualities like selfcontrol and altruism can contribute to happiness. • Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to discounts on meals, museum entry fees, movies, and other entertainment if they’re willing to disclose their age. Discounts are available through an array of venues if one speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane

tickets and more. The U.S. National Park Service offers citizens age 62 and older lifetime passes to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites for just $10 in person ($20 online or via mail). • Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brains simultaneously — something called bilateralization. This can sharpen reasoning skills. For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air trafﬁc controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in shortterm memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to

be experts at navigating, juggling multiple aircrafts simultaneously and avoiding collisions. • Less stress: As people grow older, they are able to differentiate their needs from wants and focus on

These new amenities, together with new restaurants and concession offerings, free Wi-Fi access and mobility mats, will further enhance TOBAY Beach as a premier destination in the Town of Oyster Bay. April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, aside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local water quality issues, through hands-on training, identification and problem solving. Last week I featured some boat cleaning tips that I received from Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and this week I would like

to mention an important issue that I learned more about from their President. This topic is the common act of releasing balloons into the air. Balloons are a type of marine debris that many people don’t tend to think about. Balloons are frequently accidentally or even intentionally released into the environment and once they go up, they must also come down. A very sad reality is that many times balloons are found in the stomachs of dead marine mammals. Balloons and their ribbons are in the top 5 items of marine debris found on beach cleanups, and Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. volunteers have removed 6,179 balloons from our South Shore Bays and Beaches over the last 4 years. Additionally, the following volunteer positions are currently still available: Boat Crew Members and Boat Maintenance and Repair Members. Donations are also needed for Fuel, Insurance, Clean-Up Supplies and Boat Maintenance. It has been a pleasure featuring Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and all they do. Together we can continue to better our waterways and shorelines, making them more clean and safe, which will make Long Island an even better place to live!

Contact your friends and family and make TOBAY Beach your own backyard.” The new spray park will feature a green jungle frog which emits a fan spray of water from its mouth, randomly dumping water buckets, cascading water features, spinning spheres of streaming water, an interactive water table, multiple streams of water spouts, random staggering heights of water, safety surfacing and sunshades. This new amenity will replace the current spray park that had become dilapidated from sun and saltwater. The current playground within the spray park will also be improved with new paint, equipment and sunshades. In addition to the

playground near the spray park, a new playground has been installed near the marina. This new marina playground

features multiple slides at various heights suitable for children of all ages, wall climbing elements, bridges, swinging/hanging elements and multiple climbing features. This new playground welcomes children of all ages. Councilman Labriola stated, “Residents who enjoy spending summer

days at the beach are welcome to make the sandy shore at TOBAY Beach their own waterfront property. To enhance your

staycation experience, we are upgrading the spray park and playgrounds for children of all ages. Together with free WiFi access and new food and beverage options, TOBAY is your home away from home.” From Saturday, June 22nd through Labor Day, all Town beaches will be

They also got to learn more about the different activities, events and programs at their future school. “It’s a whole new world for them,” said senior Michael Riggi, the editorin-chief. “It’s a preview for high school and they’re so excited because they will get a chance to do all of this in the future.” The high school students discussed the process of creating a newspaper, from generating story ideas, to interviewing sources, to writing, editing and publishing. They noted the importance of ﬁnding topics that are current and newsworthy. Fifth-graders then got to be the reporters by brainstorming topics and writing articles with the help Chief members. Michael said that he and his fellow editors were thinking of ways to promote the club, and thought it would be

great to visit students in the elementary school, who might not have seen The Chief before. Adviser Melissa Hornik added that she hopes this will spark interest among the ﬁfthgraders in joining the

middle school newspaper, the Berner Beacon, and ultimately continue on to The Chief. “This club obviously excels,” Ms. Hornik said, noting that the newspaper has earned several awards

this year. “It’s nice to have their work recognized, and the elementary students are giving them the recognition they deserve for all of the hard work they put into The Chief.”

Effects of Snoring Including Alzheimer’s Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age. The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be

associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the Journal of Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12

years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related

to Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called

beta-amyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. If snoring has become problematic, men are

Language, Culture, Camaraderie Eager to learn about other cultures, elementary and middle school students from the Massapequa School District took in all that was offered at the annual World Language Festival on March 27. The 15th annual event was held in the evening at Massapequa High

School featuring arts and crafts, entertainment and food. The festival showcased the six languages offered by the district — American Sign Language, French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. High school students from world language classes, clubs and honor societies coordinated

the activities and stamped passports for the children as they visited each room. In the gymnasium, students from the Mandarin Chinese program performed sword and fan dances, while ASL students signed along with different songs including the “StarSpangled Banner.” An

international food court in the cafeteria was a popular spot throughout the night. As students in the German program welcomed guests for a cookie decorating activity, they gave each child a nametag with his or her Germantranslated name. In the French room, youngsters could make crafts based on the different countries or regions where French is spoken, such as Mardi Gras

masks. One of the Spanish rooms had a restaurant theme and another was a game room. Children used their language skills to give and guess clues in Guess Who and ﬁgure out where to put their feet in Twister. The Mandarin Chinese room featured a chopsticks competition and yo-yo dance workshop. Across the hall, students labeled the different regions of Italy on a large map. Another room

had activities devoted to the Mexican celebration of Day of the Dead. Students from the National Art Honor Society did face painting. William Anderson, the curriculum associate for world language and ENL, said the night was a great opportunity for children make connections globally and with each other by experiencing different languages and cultures.

Exercise and Aging: Workout Safely After 50 In an ideal world, people young and old exercise each day. But as men and women age, ﬁnding time to work out is not so easy. Commitments to work and family often take precedence over daily exercise. As a result, many people 50 and over

might not have exercised regularly or at all in many years. But as children grow up or even move out, people facing down their golden years are often compelled to get back in the gym. That’s a wise decision that can increase a person’s chances of being healthy and happy in retirement. But before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women over 50 should take heed of the following safety tips to ensure their efforts are not derailed by accident or injury. • Speak with your physician. The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic

conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis can be physically active. However, anyone with such a condition and even those who don’t fall into those categories should consult with their physicians and receive a full physical before exercising. Such a consultation and checkup can shed light on any unknown issues, and physicians can offer advice on how to safely manage any problems that may arise. • Begin with low-intensity exercises. Even if you feel great and have maintained a healthy weight, don’t push yourself too hard at the start. Your body needs time to adjust to physical activity, so choose lowintensity exercises like walking and light strength training so your muscles, tendons and ligaments can adjust. Initially, exercise every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts.

• Choose the right places to exercise outdoors. Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people, providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors. When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident. Boardwalks, public parks and outdoor gyms are safer places to work out than wooded areas or other places well off the beaten path. • Stay hydrated. The NIA

notes that many people lose their sense of thirst as they age. But just because you aren’t thirsty does not mean you don’t need water, especially while exercising. Water regulates body temperature and lubricates the joints, thereby decreasing your risk of

injury during exercise. Exercising after 50 can help people live healthy well into retirement. But caution must be exercised when aging men and women return to exercise after a long break.
