On Tuesday evening March 22, Michael Geller, Director of Media Relations and Communications from the American Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) spoke with members and friends of Temple Sinai of Massapequa, providing an update on the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. Touching on Jewish historic roots in Ukraine, he focused on the JDC’s current emergency response to the humanitarian catastrophe,

often coordinating with other Jewish organizations. Beginning in 1914 the JDC was created to save Jews’ lives globally and build Jewish life. Even before World War II the JDC created a strong infrastructure in Ukraine and surrounding countries specifically to provide humanitarian assistance to the Jewish people and Jewish institutions. JDC worked clandestinely during the Soviet period and after the

fall of the Soviet Union. They created a vast infrastructure providing the coordination and logistics necessary to accomplish the task of safely moving millions of refugees and caring for those remaining. Not only do they support and care for needy Jews they also rebuild Jewish communities. Mr. Geller discussed the critical work in which the JDC is involved in Ukraine. Through their 18 service

centers, staff and more than 3,000 volunteers, JDC is evacuating people and their pets who need to leave Ukraine, providing safe passage, taking care of their physical, financial, emotional and spiritual needs, helping to integrate them in new communities and helping with long-term planning. They continue to support tens of thousands of Jews who have chosen to remain in their homeland, with

Parents and residents are invited to Massapequa Takes Action Coalition’s (MTAC) VIRTUAL Town Hall discussion on Monday, April 25, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. regarding what matters most in protecting our youth’s mental health. According to The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory: Protecting Youth Mental Health, mental health challenges in children, adolescents, and young adults are real and widespread. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health challenges were the leading cause of disability and poor life outcomes in young people, with up to 1 in 5 children ages 3 to 17 in the U.S. having a mental, emotional, developmental, or behavioral disorder. Since the pandemic began, rates of psychological distress among young people, including symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders, have increased.

MTAC’s Virtual Town Hall discussion, led by Kathleen Coletta, LCSW-R, looks to identify the keys to developing and maintaining optimum mental health for both parents and children with a focus on understanding the strong connection of parental mental health to our children’s mental health. Our April luncheon meeting will be held on April 28th at the Corner Galley Restaurant, and it will begin at 12:00 Noon. Rusty and Gerry always do a great job as our hosts. Special Guest Speaker for this meeting is Pete Fasulo from Sandler Training, and he will be speaking on professional presentations and time factors of such for your business meetings. Thanks to Rob Zabbia for setting up this speaker. We look forward to seeing all at this April luncheon. Our Nominating Committee, headed by Past President Patty Orzano, will present the proposed slate of nominees for the 2022 – 2023 Chamber administration at the April meeting. Town Seeks Counselors For Summer Recreation Program Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that the Town is seeking counselors for its 2022 Summer Recreation Program. The six-week program provides a rewarding employment experience for counselors as they work with children and make a difference. “This great summer job is ideal for residents age 16 or older who are looking

to build their resume. Our summer recreation counselors get real-world experience while having fun, making memories, and making a difference in the lives of others,” said Supervisor Saladino. Applicants must be available for the duration of the program, which runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, beginning July

Massapequa Pair Are National Merit Finalists A pair of Massapequa High School students have advanced to the next round of the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. Seniors Matt McAuley and Hayley Tan can proudly call themselves National Merit finalists. The two students, who were announced as semifinalists in September, were among approximately 15,000 students nationwide to be named finalists. They moved one step closer to

potentially earning Merit Awards, which includes scholarship money. “It is the result of a lot of hard work paying off,” Matt said. “My parents are definitely proud of that.” Added Hayley, “It’s an honor and I’m very excited about it. I couldn’t have foreseen this.” The students are both still in the college selection process for the fall. Matt is looking to study computer science and Hayley wants

to pursue a degree in neuroscience. “Matt and Hayley are two hard-working students who have demonstrated academic excellence throughout their Massapequa school experience,” high school Principal Barbara Lowell said. “It is no surprise that they have qualified as National Merit Scholarship finalists. We know that they will do great things in their future.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board loaded the last boxes filled with donations from generous Town residents to be shipped overseas to assist the people of Ukraine. In mid-March, the Town initiated a collection drive at various Town facilities, where residents could drop off much-needed supplies including medical items, personal hygiene products and non-perishable food in an effort to help the crisis abroad. Over 7,000lbs – the largest collection on Long Island – of supplies were collected by the Town. “We all watch in horror as we witness the faces of innocent women, children and men impacted by war,” said Supervisor Saladino. “As the unimaginable continues to unfold overseas, we stand united here at home. The overwhelming generosity of our residents has been nothing short of amazing. This Humanitarian Relief Drive is resulting in muchneeded supplies being delivered to innocent victims of Russia’s aggression. God bless the people of Ukraine and everyone who donated to help them.” Town officials thanked Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello and the Nassau County Legislature for partnering in this collection initiative, and recognized Craig Probst and Brian Kuhn of Hendrickson

Fire Rescue Equipment for their assistance in transporting the items. Hendrickson, a company known for their work in the field of emergency vehicles and various fire safety equipment, donated use of a 53-foot tractor trailer and assisted in transporting the items to New Jersey, where they will be further sorted
