to Last Hope Animal Rescue in Wantagh. Joanne Anderson, a volunteer for Last Hope, visited the Builders Club meeting afterschool on March 11 to accept a donation of about 15 blankets. She said that when people come in to adopt animals, they will receive a blanket as a gift.

Fairfield Book Battle Energizes Readers

There are two book brackets, one for students in grades K-2 featuring eight illustrated children’s books, and another geared towards third, fourth and fifth graders with eight chapter books and novels. Pictures of the book covers

appear on the two bulletin boards that showcase the brackets. Throughout March, two books are previewed during the morning announcements, and students and can vote to decide which one advances

to the next round. Each bracket will feature a final four, then a top two, before students pick the winner. Battle of the Books

is being organized by Fairfield’s reading teachers, Denise Pitta and Marisa Robin. They explained that the goal is

to encourage students to read more while and to give them suggestions of books they might enjoy.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Massapequa Village Mayor Danny Pearl today announced that the Town and Village, in partnership with Drug Free Long Island and the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD), will host a ‘Shed the Meds’ event at Massapequa Park Village Hall on Saturday, April 16th from 10:00am – 1:00pm.

“The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with Massapequa Park Mayor Danny Pearl, Drug Free LI and the Nassau County Police Department on this important initiative to keep prescription drugs out of the wrong hands. Through proper disposal of old medications, we can prevent them from contaminating the environment through improper disposal and also

keep them out of the hands of young people.” In cooperation with Drug Free Long Island, and the Nassau County Police Department, the Town and Village will host this event at Massapequa Park Village Hall, in the back parking lot. This program is anonymous. For those who cannot make it to the event, the Nassau County Police Department would like to remind

residents that disposal containers are located at all Police Precincts throughout the county for safe deposit. Town Crews Demolish Abandoned Massapequa Appoints Next Squatter Zombie Home School Leader Dr. William Brennan

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with local neighbors and the Town’s Highway crew to commence the demolition of a long-dilapidated zombie home on Alhambra Road in Massapequa. This longtime eyesore was recently court-granted for demolition following multiple complaints from local neighbors. “This property has been inspected by our workforce several times, with multiple violations cited for lack of maintenance,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Town personnel repeatedly found deplorable conditions as this property showed clear signs of neglect. Unfortunately, the property owner did not fulfil any opportunities to clean it up

but fortunately, our Quality of Life Taskforce stepped in to help our residents.” Town inspections discovered a variety of code violations, including overgrown vegetation, deterioration or even lack of walls, debris strewn throughout both indoors and outside, damaged or missing ceilings, and overall deterioration. While the condition of the property worsened over time, the Town continued all efforts to keep the property safe to the surrounding neighborhood while pursuing legal action. “The great success of our Task Force really speaks for itself, as we’ve now successfully demolished more than two dozen homes since its inception,”

Supervisor Saladino added. “Through the diligence of our Town team – our building and legal professionals – we were successful in receiving the court’s go-ahead to proceed with demolition of this property.” The Town Code Enforcement Bureau of the Department of Planning and Development is charged with the enforcement of all codes, rules and regulations pertaining to zoning, housing and public safety. It is expressly designed to handle requests of citizens regarding possible violations. Following an extensive search, the Massapequa School District Board of Education has appointed its next educational leader. During the March 3rd Board meeting, veteran educator Dr. William Brennan was appointed Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1, 2022. With more than 22 years of educational experience, including 10 as a Central Office administrator, Dr. Brennan joins Massapequa from the Farmingdale School District, where he currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent for Innovation and Organizational Development. Through his years as an educator, he has served as a science teacher, professional developer, athletic coach, district administrator, leadership coach and adjunct professor. “We are very excited to welcome Dr. Brennan to our school district,” Board President Kerry Wachter said. “Dr. Brennan is a leader of leaders. He understands and shares the values of Massapequa, is an experienced educator and is respected among his colleagues. Most importantly, he is a relationship builder who will utilize the talents of our staff to achieve districtwide shared goals. Dr. Brennan has also led Farmingdale through a transformation around school safety and security across all buildings, chaired the Legislative Action Committee, and improved internal and external communications. “I am thankful to the Board for the opportunity to lead Massapequa and continue the tradition of achievement,” Dr. Brennan said. “I believe that meaningful change only happens when you

first connect to people’s hearts, and that begins with building strong relationships, empathetic listening and compassion. I look forward to being a hands-on and visible member of the school community.” Dr. Brennan received his Doctor of Education from Fordham University, his Master of Science from Long Island University and his Bachelor of Science from Marist College. He has garnered numerous professional awards and recognitions, published several articles in educational publications, presented on various educational topics nationwide and served on several professional organizations. He resides in Bay Shore with his wife and three children. As part of the search, the Board of Education engaged the services of District Wise Consulting, took feedback from all constituent groups, held community forums and utilized a community survey to narrow its search from 30 applicants.

Hope for Youth www.hfyny.org Hope For Youth’s dedicated team of staff, volunteers and interns facilitates positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families. The non-proﬁt runs what they call a Kinship Caregiver Program, which helps create a better Long Island by offering a child a pathway to a better future.

Equally as sad, Long Island, like many communities across the country, is in dire need of foster parents for children from birth to the age of 18, whether these caregivers have informal or formal custody of children. Such care isn’t always provided by unrelated individuals. When provided by a relative, it’s called “kinship care.” Kinship foster parents must provide full-time protection and nurturing of a child, as well as a stable and safe home. They must be above the age of 21 and meet a number of additional eligibility requirements. Designated kinship foster parents receive various types of ﬁnancial support. They also receive family services, case management support and other supportive services.

Families have access to such Hope For Youth services as mental health, ChildParent Psychotherapy, Children and Family Treatment Support Services and the Health Home program. In addition, Hope For Youth partners with the “Parenting the Second Time Around” (PASTA) team from the Riverhead-based Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County to help grandparents navigate the educational, medical and legal systems to get the support and resources they need. Their experts assist with such challenges as discipline, child development, legal concerns and rebuilding a family. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County also provides support groups for both adults and children, plus monthly social activities for families.
