is the third Massapequa student to receive the “gift of beauty” from the foundation, and the second to be given the prom experience. It was Sept. 14, 2022, when Arianna found out she had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph tissue. She went through eight rounds of chemotherapy, which she finished in December. Despite a serious health obstacle, Arianna has made the most of her senior year. She was named to highlyselective All-State and AllEastern vocal ensembles, starred as Vi Moore in the recent musical production of “Footloose” and served as president of both the Tri-M Music Honor Society and the Model U.N. She is also the founder the school’s Environmental Club and is active in the science research program. Arianna also hasn’t let her illness get in the way of the college selection process,

continuing with her applications and campus visits. She is narrowing down her choices, and plans to be a dual vocal music and pre-medicine major in college. “It was very surprising,” Arianna said of receiving the prom makeover. “It’s going to be very rewarding. It’s really a nice ending to my senior year to have this.” Mr. Anderson said that Arianna will be “Cinderella for a night” when she attends her senior prom in mid-June. “We give her everything she needs to make the night perfect,” he said. His sister, Teresa Colgan, is an English teacher at Massapequa High School and reached out to the administration and faculty, seeking nominations. Guidance counselor Allison Fifield suggested Arianna, and was thrilled to see her student chosen for the prom makeover. “She’s been through

such a challenging time,” person. As we look forward an amazing way to make Ms. Fifield said. “Arianna is to her recovery and her her prom night all the more a remarkable student and bright future, this will be special.”

Since being diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of her senior year, Massapequa High School student Arianna Surrow has maintained a positive outlook. On April 3, she was all smiles again when she was surprised with a free prom makeover, courtesy of the My Fairy Godfathers Foundation. Arianna was called into Principal Barbara Lowell’s office, where she and her mother learned of the good news. She met with the organization’s co-founders Andrew Ashton, who attended via videoconference, and Steven Anderson, who was there in person. Mr. Anderson is a Massapequa native and Berner High School graduate. The Florida-based My Fairy Godfathers will pick up all of Arianna’s prom costs, including the tickets, transportation, flowers, dress, shoes, makeup, nails and a custom-cut wig. She

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with his partners in Nassau County government, Supervisor Jen DeSena of North Hempstead and Supervisor Don Clavin of Hempstead, as well as Oyster Bay Town Clerk Rich LaMarca and Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato, to demand that State lawmakers eliminate the State Housing Plan to flood suburbs and singlefamily home neighbors with thousands of new apartments. This latest proposal by Governor Hochul – seemingly a repeat of last year’s plan to turn suburban neighborhoods into overcrowded urban centers – would result in high density housing flooding every community, as well as spot zoning in which large scale apartment buildings could pop up next to single-family homes. “We must save our

suburbs from this illconceived plan as it would overcrowd classrooms, greatly increase traffic and cars parked on our streets, strain emergency services and threaten the environment. We join together to protect our most precious resource – our water supply, which is under attack by this latest plan of overdevelopment,” said Supervisor Saladino. “When it comes to the environment, the largest plume in any sole-source aquifer in the United States sits under our land in the Town of Oyster Bay. Over a billion dollars are already needed to clean up the plume, and even more is needed for our water districts to keep ensuring that our drinking water is safe at the tap. Over a billion dollars are also needed to upgrade our sewage and septic systems which are already near capacity, with

many seeping into the ground. Our only landfill in Brookhaven is on the verge of permanent closure, and a garbage crisis looms for the current population as waste will need to be trucked off Long Island and no solution exists. For

these reasons and a host of others, we demand that State lawmakers eliminate the Governor’s Housing Mandate.” The three Town Supervisors joined local district officials to voice their concerns of how the

Governor’s urbanization plan would negatively impact the environment, traffic, parking, emergency services, police protection, local utilities and schools. They also asked the public to join them in contacting state officials to demand

A Look Into The Work Of Local Wantagh Artist, Francis Bonnet By Natalie Almeida Francis Bonnet is a local artist and a graduate from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), where he earned a degree in Illustration. From a young age, Francis was always drawn to the world of cartoons. Growing up, he recalls a used bookstore around the corner from him, which he visited regularly to buy Peanuts, Garﬁeld and Calvin and Hobbes books with the money he earned from his allowance.

These were some of his favorite comic strips and it was in those moments in which he knew that this was something he wanted to do. He soon began making his very own comics in grade school, which served as a foundation that helped him learn and improve upon since then. During his time at FIT, he developed his skills further in graphic design and painting, which helped his career tremendously. In 2003, Francis first published

a comic called Crunchy, which ran both online and in print for two years. Afterwards, he began focusing his efforts on Suburban Fairy Tales. This comic series follows fairy tale characters in a modern, suburban Long Island setting. The series has evolved over the years and has since narrowed down its characters to primarily focus on The Three Little Pigs. Today, eight Suburban Fairy Tales books have been published and are available for purchase on Amazon.

The newest book, All’s Fair In Love and Wolves, was published this past September and it introduces a new character, Wolfette, who will become the love interest of one of The Three Little Pigs. The series has also been featured on GoComics, Kidjutsu, Raytoons Cartoon Avenue, Global Comix, Webtoon, and The Funnies. Francis Bonnet also freelances for a variety of other comic series. He began working for Archie Comics Publications in

February 2015 and provides stories and cover ideas for various Archie Digests. Francis has also contributed to other comic strips such as Rhymes with Orange by Hilary Price and Frank and Ernest by Bob Thaves. Massapequa’s Unqua Students Thank Those Who Serve And Protect

A six-year tradition continued at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, as members of local police agencies spoke to students for Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on March 24. Police officers visited

classes throughout the day, talking about their jobs, sharing a few stories about “catching bad guys” and showing some of the equipment they use. Inquisitive students got to ask plenty of questions and even try on some of that equipment, like helmets and vests.

Most of the visitors in blue were relatives of Unqua students and staff. They represented numerous local departments, such as Nassau, Suffolk and New York City police, and included patrol officers and members of special units.

In Christine Radomski’s kindergarten class, students made thankyou books for the visiting officers with pictures and sentences about the work that the police do. Her students also received police activity books from Nassau County. The student council

made a banner, “We know we are safe because of you,” that was filled with blue paper handprints. The hallways were also filled with work honoring police officers including posters and poems. Principal Deanna Catapano and Assistant Principal Laura

Hulsaver said that students look forward to Law Enforcement Appreciation Day every year. The mission, they explained, is to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of local enforcement in their efforts to serve and protect the community.

Cosponsored by the Friends of the Bay, the day offers volunteers – individuals, families, companies and organizations – an opportunity to give back to the environment by removing litter from the shoreline and below. Retiring Early According to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents

indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many

working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

Although RTLI’s teams work year round, April is a particularly important month because it is National Rebuilding Month. “Too many Americans suffer from the health and economic consequences of living in substandard housing and under served communities,” said Caroline Blakely, President & CEO of Rebuilding Together. “National Rebuilding Month serves as an annual month-long call to service to encourage people to support their neighbors, strengthen their community and ensure everyone is living in safe and healthy homes.” RTLI together with its 120 sister affiliates will all look to surpass last year’s accomplishment of working with over 13,000 volunteers to repair close to 800 homes and over 150 community centers nationwide. As you drive around Long Island, watch for RTLI’s lawn signs. If you see one, you will know their volunteers are hard at work helping someone who needs a helping hand. Once accepted into the program, each home receives a safety check of every room. Each home has its own challenges. RTLI also listens to the homeowner to determine their priorities. Hazards and unsafe conditions are noted and given to the volunteer crews so they can prepare a materials list and then

get to work. Minor plumbing and electrical repairs may be made, but they may also do weatherization, flooring (if the current floor is a hazard), sheet rock repair and a myriad of other repairs. If someone has limited mobility, a wheelchair ramp may be constructed, grab bars and railings installed, doorways widened where possible to accommodate a wheelchair. Conversions of bathtubs to walk-in showers can also be done and under certain circumstances, a stair glide may be installed. While RTLI cannot always take care of every issue in the home, they will tell you that every home they work on is left safer than is was and the lives of its residents are improved when the project is complete! So how can you help? •If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI office at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program. •Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an office person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Suffolk crew teams are always looking for more help. •Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding. •RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County (CCE) Marine Program, as well as local environmental groups whose shared mission is to protect waterways. This year, when the Collec’Thor returns to local north shore waterways in April, CCE is seeking assistance from local volunteers looking to get involved in helping their environment. “This is a great opportunity for high school and college students – as well as adults – to give back to our environment and serve as ‘Citizen Scientists’ in the collection of data,” said Councilwoman Maier. “There are also potential science projects, internships and analysis opportunities, as well as educational field trip opportunities, related to the Collec’Thor and how to protect from marine pollution.” Specifically, CCE is conducting a study to measure how much debris is gathered by the Collec’Thor and determine what specific trash is found floating in the marina. All volunteers will receive a certificate acknowledging their efforts in making a difference in their community and protecting the environment. The Town currently has two Collec’Thor traps which are

in partnership with Friends of the Bay, The Waterfront Center, the Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor Protection Committee, and Oyster Bay High School. Collec’Thors, the latest in marine debris collection technology, have been deemed the most efficient trash skimmers available for marine and coastal

usage. They are specifically designed to target solid and liquid waste, including plastic bottles, cigarette filters, butts and packaging, microplastics and hydrocarbons. The technology uses a small pump to draw in surrounding water and skims any floating trash into its receptacle. The

students, who then worked hard to make it a reality. Fifth graders Nicole Durso, Mia Piatti and Lily Ippolito spearheaded the collection, with support from their fellow student leaders who helped promote it.
