National Art Honor Society students had a face-painting booth to paint the flags of other countries. In the gymnasium, there were cultural performances including Chinese Lion and Kung-Fu Fan dances. Guests were able to enjoy dinner and dessert at an international food court in the cafeteria. Bill Anderson, the curriculum associate of World Languages and ENL, said the purpose of the event was to introduce the elementary students to the program and get them thinking about what language they would want to learn in middle school and beyond. He added that turnout was very high this year because of the introduction of the FLES program in third grade, which provides weekly Spanish instruction. The event was also promoted extensively as Berner Middle School students made posters that were hung throughout the elementary schools. “The children were engaged and had a great time at our World Language Festival,” Mr. Anderson said. “I think they learned the importance of studying another language and exploring other cultures.”

take students on an international journey, and they got their passports stamped at each stop. Activities were organized and led by high school World Language students and each room had its own theme. Children made crafts to celebrate the holiday traditions of Italy, decorated gingerbread cookies and colored paper crowns in the German fairy tale room and learned how to use Chinese yo-yos and chopsticks. The American Sign Language room had a Disney theme with games that allowed elementary students to learn some basic signs. Crafts from various French-speaking areas such as Paris, Belgium, Madagascar and New Orleans gave children a hands-on experience. They could make Guatemalan worry dolls and play popular board games in Spanish. “It’s a really good way for children to experience different cultures, have fun and learn new things such as words in different languages,” said senior Alexandra Kanapes, a German language student. “Planning our activities was a group effort and it was really good to teach the language that we love to learn.”

The power of the ocean’s flow is felt on the incoming tide. A building of momentum, a surge, explosions, fire crashing on rocks. Life is like that. A surging battle uphill; attainment; engulfment; then a period of peace begins. The energy of the high water flow can bring nutriments, or bring destruction, but it always brings change. On the ebb tide, assessments can be made, as old ground is revealed again to the light.

Earth may be their home, but fifth-grade students at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently learned about all of the planets. The students studied the evolution of solar system

models, which went from the belief that Earth was in the center, to the planets revolving around the sun. They created their own pictures of the solar system on construction paper and had to draw the planets to scale in order to

7

Solar System Study understand the differences in size. Students also learned about other objects in space such as asteroids and meteors, and studied the life cycle of a star.

BLUE & GOLD - Massapequa Pack 776 held its annual Blue and Gold dinner at the Seaford Memorare club on March 5th. Thirteen boys were awarded the Arrow Of Light and bridged over to Boy Scouts. This award is the highest recognition a Cub Scout can earn. Congratulations!

Magic of Math Math activities in kindergarten classes had a St. Patrick’s Day twist at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on March 17th. Students participated in St. Mathrick’s learning centers in which they practiced a variety of

different skills. With St. Patty’s Spin Graph, children spun a wheel with various symbols such a rainbow, a pot of gold and a Shamrock, then used their green crayons to create graphs based on how frequently each symbol came up. In Add and Cover, the

children rolled dice and covered the number that represented the total with gold coins. They also used blocks to measure paper leprechauns, and played a number guessing game called Leprechaun Squeeze.

Volunteer Firefighter of the Year Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Joseph G. Pinto recently joined with members of the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce at their annual luncheon for the Volunteer Firefighter of the Year Awards Ceremony held at Zona Restaurant in Massapequa.

Supervisor Saladino, Councilman Pinto and the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce honored Volunteer Firefighters from the Massapequa Fire Department for outstanding and extraordinary job performance, bravery, exemplary service and a steadfast commitment to

the business community and residents. Supervisor Saladino and Councilman Pinto presented citations to Richard Paul and Barney Muldoon commending them for their extraordinary service to the department and to the community-at-large.

Less than one week into the new season, and I came down with a cold. Not just any cold, mind you – the epitome of chest colds, complete with congestion, sinus pressure and one of those irritating, incessant sort of tickles in the back of the throat that seem to kick into high gear right around bedtime. All winter, and not a sniffle. That, I believe, is what they call irony. So, too, is the fact that those who have been looking forward to spring with such anticipation are already bemoaning the pouring rain we’ve been experiencing over the last week or so. April showers

bring May flowers, do they not? At least that’s how the old saying goes. Of course, some flowers have already blossomed thanks to the unseasonably warm temperatures scattered throughout March and, as such, have gone back to hibernating for the duration. More irony, indeed. No worries, there are certainly plenty of flowers to be had over the next several months, along with green grass and flourishing trees and… pollen and sap and weeds and mold spores… There’s nothing like the great outdoors. Just be sure to stock up on tissues and allergy pills before you venture out. And maybe an umbrella,

for good measure. Spring is a perfect representation of life as a whole. It’s filled with much anticipation of better days, often precluded by clouds and unseasonable changes in temperature, or moods, if you will. And still, there are those who would just as soon skip right over it into summer, assuming that sunshine and surf and sand equal happiness; when really, the unknown is never guaranteed to be better than the present. And that, dear readers, is the essence of it all. Appreciate today and all the sniffles and sunbursts it may bring; stop and pick a flower, splash in a puddle, enjoy the moment. It’s the only one you’ve got.

Now entering its 48th Season, the Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo will officially open on Thursday, April 13th. During the opening weeks, guests will have the opportunity to learn about the forthcoming baby animals, including chicks, ducklings and kid goats, and will be able to pet and hand feed the animals once they are born. Though some of the park’s Summer animals (giraffe, camels and lemurs) are still vacationing in Florida until May, the Spring season is always an especially fun and relaxing time for guests to visit, with cooler weather, smaller crowds and lower prices. Ocean Science Bowl Massapequa High School students recently participated in the National Ocean Science Bowl at Stony Brook University, coming away with a fourth-place finish. This is a national ocean awareness program for high school students sponsored by well-known organizations such as NOAA, Sea Grant and the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. Each team consisted of five students and four

competed during play. The Jeopardy-style competition highlighted knowledge of marine science while requiring game strategy and teamwork. This year’s theme was ocean energy. Massapequa’s Bay Scallop Bowl team, which participated for the sixth straight year, was led by captain Sarah Whelan, who is planning to pursue oceanic and environmental studies in college. The team also consisted of

juniors Hunter D’Amore and Michael Cafiero, and seniors James Christian and Nick Bianco. They were coached by teacher Gregory Kwas and science curriculum associate Lisa Caputo. “This was a well-fought battle and the fourth-place finish is a new historic high for Massapequa High School,” said Mr. Kwas “We are very proud of our marine science whiz kids.”

BAGPIPER AT BIRCH - Michael Molloy, a music teacher at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, kept his St. Patrick’s Day tradition alive by serenading students and staff with songs on the bagpipes. He traveled each wing of the school on March 17th to perform traditional pipe band marches, such as “Scotland the Brave” and “Let Erin Remember.” Mr. Molloy, a member of the Inis Fada Gaelic Pipe Band, has been sharing his talent at the school for more than 15 years. FREEZIN FOR A REASON - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph S. Saladino and Oyster Bay Town Councilman Louis B. Imbroto recently joined with fellow participants of the Special Olympics New York’s 4th Annual “Freezin’ for a Reason” Town of Oyster Bay Polar Plunge at TOBAY Beach. Supervisor Saladino and Councilman Imbroto both took the plunge and were supported by many local residents who also braved the icy waters for this heartwarming fundraiser benefitting Special Olympics New York.

Students and staff at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District used their feet to achieve a feat - raising hundreds of dollars for Down Syndrome International. The school marked World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st with

a “Rock Our Socks” fundraiser. Children and adults were asked to wear funky socks to school and donate a dollar. The idea was brought to the school by the parent of an Unqua kindergartner with Down syndrome, who provided socks for the staff. The fundraiser was organized

and promoted by the Student Council. The purpose of “Rock Our Socks” was to raise money for a cause that benefits a child at the school, and to raise awareness about the challenges that people with Down syndrome face.

DUNE DAY - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with Town Officials, Islanders’ legend Bobby Nystrom and caring Volunteers at the 2017 Dune Stabilization Project at TOBAY Beach. Since 1989, the Dune Stabilization Project has been an initiative to help protect TOBAY Beach. This recent event included many caring volunteers working side by side for a great cause. Last Hope Receives Grant Last Hope Animal Rescue recently received a $15,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to help fund the preparation of incoming kittens for

adoption. Kitten season is about to begin within weeks. This grant will not only allow our organization to place more kittens in

loving, responsible homes, but will work in parallel to our various efforts to spay/ neuter & vaccinate feral cats, in hopes of reducing the tremendous cat

overpopulation on Long Island. The attached press release describes our generous Petco Foundation grant in more detail.

Taking a Stand History came alive for secondary students from the Massapequa School District, who recently participated in National History Day at Hofstra University. This year’s theme was “Taking a Stand in History,” and two students earned awards for their projects. Students from Berner Middle School and Massapequa High School’s Ames and main campuses created projects using an individual or a historical event as the focal point. Categories included documentary, website, historical paper and exhibit. Participants were able to choose a historical topic and presentation format

that interested them. Some historical figures they selected were Nelson Mandela, Muhammed Ali, Clara Barton, Jackie Robinson and Queen Liliokalani, among others. Berner eighth-graders completed projects for their social studies classes that aligned with the National History Day requirements. This ensured that they were able to develop research and presentation skills while learning how to create annotated bibliographies. The best projects were selected for the regional competition. Students at Ames were able to compete in the event by completing a project through the History

Club, and participants from the high school worked on projects with Social Studies Curriculum Associate Brian Trapani. Berner Middle School student Adriana Kamor received the Genocide, Bias or Tolerance in History Award sponsored by the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County for her documentary on Dietrich Bonhoeffer, “Holocaust Hero Heeds Call for Help.” Massapequa High School student Kyle Fiene earned the Maritime History Award sponsored by the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum for his exhibit, “The Battle of Dunkirk: Great Britain Takes a Stand.”

Book Bracket March Madness has come to Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, but instead of college basketball, the focus in on literacy. In Matthew Cunha’s class, fifth-graders are participating in March Mentor Text Madness. He

created a bracket using 32 mentor texts, which are books that students use as examples of good writing as part of the Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop initiative. Students must compare two books and write a summary. Whichever is the favorite of

the class, moves on to the next round in the bracket. Mr. Cunha explained that students must give a solid reason why they like one book over the other, such as the literary devices that are used or the lesson that a story imparts.
