Long Island Senate Majority delegation announced the ‘MTA RAIL Act’ at the Hicksville LIRR station. The MTA RAIL Act will overhaul the MTA, its operations, and introduce much needed reforms to the way the MTA operates. They announced a five-point platform that includes an independent, forensic audit of the MTA, giving riders a voting voice on the MTA Board. The five-point platform includes: an independent, c o m p r e h e n s i v e forensic audit of the MTA’s procurements, improvement to long-term capital planning, providing riders a voting voice on the MTA board, overhauling the way the MTA analyzes itself, and ensuring MTA revenues are more likely to go to New York businesses. It will also modernize the MTA and work to bring reform, transparency, and improved service to the millions of MTA riders.

Spotlighting Female Sports Stars To celebrate Women’s History Month, fifthgraders learned about female figures in sports at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. The project was a combined effort led by physical education
teachers Danielle Montano and Heather Poetsch and library media specialist Claire Mitchell. Students researched female athletes and coaches from the past or present. Using Google Slides, they created graphics that
resembled trading cards, which were then posted to a bulletin board near the gymnasium. Information included each person’s name, birthday, sport and accomplishments.
Good Digital Citizens As technology becomes a bigger part of their lives at school, at home and on the go, fifth-graders in Mary Elizabeth Delaney’s class learned about digital citizenship at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. The children watched videos about internet safety and participated in
classroom discussions. Ms. Delaney said her main message for the students was “posting is permanent,” so they must think carefully before putting any information online, in addition to getting permission from their parents. She explained that colleges and employers often review the social media use of
applicants. Mrs. Delaney and each of the 24 students contributed to a class bulletin board project by responding to the question, “How can you be a good digital citizen?” All of the individual pieces were put together to create a large colorful poster reflecting their values on internet safety.

Your Thoughts Are Making You Stressed “Start by doing what’s necessary. Then, do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” - St. Francis of Assisi Your life isn’t making you stressed. Your thoughts are making you stressed. If I had a dollar for every time I heard a friend, family member, business associate or a co-worker tell me they are stressed, I’d probably be retired. When a lot of tasks are on your plate at once, the human mind will fall in line with the perceived chaos of multiple deadlines or obligations, and will begin to scramble and spin around kind of like a dog frantically chasing its own tail. Have you ever witnessed a dog spin in circles chasing its own tail and going nowhere? It’s amusing and pity-inducing all at once, as you muse about what a futile effort it is. The dog is moving quickly, expending a great deal of energy and yet going nowhere. That is exactly what we do when we allow the mind to rapidly
spin in circles with stress. We are expending a great deal of energy and going nowhere. It is not the ten deadlines or laundry list of errands or looming term paper or sales quota that is making you stressed. It is your thoughts about said events that are making you stressed. Things, events and responsibilites are neither good nor bad; they just are. It is how we frame them within our emotional landscape and nervous system that determines how they make us feel. Many an afternoon, my son comes home from school declaring that he has too much to get done and it simply isn’t possible. It is true that he typically has some math homework, language arts homework, reading and guitar practice to juggle. When he does become overwhelmed, I let him know that it takes far more energy to “be overwhelmed” than it does to simply complete his tasks. Let that sink in. The truth is, the human mind has a tendency to underestimate the amount of time we have
and overestimate the amount of things that need to be done. We typically have more time than we perceive, more competency and stamina than we give ourselves credit for and less to actually do than our imagination would have us believe. When there is a storm of activity whirling around me, I keep it exactly there - around me, but not within me. The wind may blow my leaves around, but my trunk remains still. I know that nothing can be accomplished with chaotic energy, nor can it be accomplished by attempting to tackle everything at once. I make a mental note of what needs to get done, take each task one at a time, and work briskly yet attentively. I mentally pat myself on the back as each task is completed and crossed off my list. When others bring their frenetic energy into my sphere and express their own sense urgency, I let them know that I hear them and I understand the importance it has to them. I know that as I complete my tasks, one by one, all will get done and all will be well.

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.
In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.
Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! If you would like to be a part of their mission and volunteer with this organization, you can! The following volunteer positions are available: Boat Crew Members, Boat Captains, Boat Maintence and Repair, Office Assistants, Building and Grounds Maintenance and Repair and Festival Booth Volunteers. Also, if you are interested in donating to their organization, you can safely and securly donate on their website when you click the ‘donate’ tab.
This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, OceanBay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season. They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of

Second-graders got to walk a day in the shoes of the people they admire at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Family members were invited to tour the student wax museum on March 19, the
culminating activity in the biography unit. Each student selected a famous person to research, past or present. They used books and online resources such as PebbleGo and World Book to compile information for
their reports. Selections included athletes, authors, entertainers, politicians and scientists. Students showcased their research as the wax museum opened its doors. Each child dressed up as his or her person with
costumes ranging from gym shorts and a basketball jersey to an astronaut suit. They stood still on black circles with information sheets that included five interesting facts, waiting for visitors to come by and learn more.

Regional Recognition Thomas McKillop and Martin Voigt, administrators in the Massapequa School District, were recently recognized by the Long Island-based Council of Administrators and Supervisors. They were among 15 highly skilled public school leaders to receive Administrator of the Year awards at a ceremony on March 14 at the Holiday Inn in Plainview. Mr. McKillop has worked in the district for 26 years,
including 14 as principal and five as assistant principal of East Lake Elementary School. Prior to that, he was a fourthgrade teacher at Unqua Elementary School. “An award like this is a testament to the people that I work with every day, all staff members and, of course, the student and the entire East Lake community,” he said. “I am a lucky individual to work in such a great place surrounded by great people.”
Mr. Voigt is the physical education chairman and athletic coordinator for grades 9-12. The teacher, coach and program supervisor is a 1977 Massapequa High School graduate and has been a member of the district’s physical education department for 34 years. Earlier this year, he was recognized as a Certified Athletic Administrator by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.
Librarian Earns Top Honor Renee Susman, the library media specialist at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, was named School Librarian of the Year by Nassau BOCES. She has worked in the district for 25 years and became East Lake’s school librarian in 1996. Ms. Susman was nominated by her fellow library media specialists in the district. They cited her enthusiasm and passion for her profession and her students, as well as her knowledge, dedication and innovation. Before
the elementary level, she worked in college and government libraries. “You can’t fake the genuine passion I have for what I do,” she said. “I’m constantly reinventing myself because it’s all about the kids.” Ms. Susman embraced the addition of Makerspace to the elementary library program in 2016, an initiative that incorporated the 21st Century skills of critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and problem-solving. She created thematic lessons to make meaningful use
of new “plugged and unplugged” resources and engage students in the discovery process. With her self-described “weird, wacky and wild” personality, Ms. Susman excels at capturing her students’ attention. She strives to create a childcentered environment where everyone is treated fairly. Ms. Susman added the libraries are an essential component of any school where students learn necessary research skills along with respect and responsibility.

Turkey Meatloaf Your Family Will Love
This week we're sharing a recipe for turkey meatloaf that requires only a handful of ingredients and is sure to please the entire family.
Preparation In a large mixing bowl, combine ground turkey, Lipton onion soup mix, eggs, water, ketchup and bread crumbs.
All I know is when it happens you begin changing from being a child to becoming an adult
Use 2 lbs. of chopped turkey meat for a larger gathering of four or more people, or 1 lb. for three or less people. The below is the full recipe for 2 lbs. of turkey meat. For 1 lb. simply cut all ingredients in half.
Fold, knead and mix together using your hands (don't forget to wash hands after handling raw turkey meat). With a large serving spoon, scoop mixture into baking pan and evenly spread out, shaping into a loaf shape.

What You Will Need 2 lbs. of Ground Turkey 1 packet of Lipton Onion Recipe Soup & Dip Mix 2 Whole Eggs 3/4 Cup Water 1/3 Cup Ketchup 3/4 Cup Plain Dry Bread Crumbs
Place pan onto center rack of oven and bake for one hour. Let stand for ten minutes and serve with your favorite sides. Enjoy!
