How Do I Top That? After my last column expressing how much my late friend Brenna meant to me, I received an outpouring, not just from regular readers, but from Brenna’s family and friends, letting me know that the column I wrote about her touched them tremendously. Now, how do I top that? Have you ever felt that way? You deliver a tour de force, whatever that may be in your life or career, and now you are left with tackling your next act, only to think, “How do I top that?” Perhaps we are not meant to compete with our last great feat, but rather to integrate it into the intricate tapestry of who we are, and trust in what comes forth from there. Generally speaking, with an accomplishment of any kind, comes an unspoken promise of more and better accomplishments to come. Expectations rise and, with it, so does anxiety and selfconsciousness in its most literal term; an acute consciousness of the self. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard people
expectations, and the expectations of others? Self-judgement is born in the mind. Turn down the volume of the mind and turn up the volume of the heart. The gut should always run interference. Some of what I write may be pure platinum, while other entries are gold, silver or even rust, depending on who you ask. I’ve certainly gotten a few rusty emails over these months. I’ve also gotten emails of appreciation and gratitude that have touched me deeply. One thing I will always serve up is my truth. That I know I can deliver every time, without exception. Having the courage to say, “This is who I am, and this is how I feel,” is the antidote to, “How do I top that?” syndrome. The next time you’re about to give your next presentation, create your next piece of art, cook your next meal, plan your next party or draw up your next big plans, if it feels right and it feels real, and it resonates with your heart and your gut, it’s a meaningful and worthy pursuit. How it will be received by others is anyone’s guess.

Tony Award Nominee and Broadway veteran Norm Lewis shared his professional talent with the students at the Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) in Syosset recently when Lewis led a Master Class and Q&A session at the school. Lewis talked about his impressive career on stage, television, and film. LIHSA’s aspiring artists then had the chance to seek advice on pursuing their careers in the arts. in groups and remixed pop music by making new beats after the drum tracks were removed from wellknown songs. Ms. Guando explained that the project taught students about beat patterns and looping, and also provided an understanding of how modern music is made. They learned that their beats couldn’t added arbitrarily had to make sense with the rest of the music. Students began the year by using Incredibox, a user-friendly, drag-anddrop program to add beats and create looping effects, before moving on to the more advanced software. “The technology is a tool to help the students create,” she said. “They can keep it as simple or make it as complex as they want. It allows them to do a lot of creating, without needing the performing skills of an ensemble class.”

Although the music department has been using SmartMusic for several years, this year a web-based program was introduced that has a greatly expanded library of songs. It also allows students to access music on their Chromebooks so they can practice at home. “I like that you can hear yourself play, so you know what to work on,” said seventh-grader Josh Holden about the feature that allows him to record and play back his own performance. Mr. Basirico added that the program allows students to improve their music sight reading abilities, which helps them earn better NYSSMA scores, one of the determining factors for selection to All-County ensembles. Technology is enhancing the music experience for students at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District as they are working with programs that help them develop their abilities. Band and orchestra students are using SmartMusic, an Internetbased program that allows them to practice hundreds of songs and receive instant feedback on their performances. In addition to viewing the musical notes on the screen, each song includes a professional accompaniment so students understand how their part works within a full ensemble. “This program is a nice addition,” Mr. Einhart said. “The students get to practice their music in the context of actually playing with an orchestra.” Added band teacher Ronald Basirico, “They can hear what everyone else is supposed to sound like, so they can fit their part in.”

Get Ready: Early Spring Landscaping Tips D uring the cold months of winter, many people stare longingly out of their window dreaming of spring and time spent outdoors. For those with green thumbs, images of tending to the garden and other aspects of their landscapes, no doubt, dominate such daydreams. Draw inspiration from those budding crocuses and daffodils pushing through the last remnants of snow and employ these tips to prepare for the upcoming gardening season.
One of the first steps is to apply a pre-emergent weed killer to get a head start in knocking out weeds that can plague the lawn during the growing season. Killing weeds at the roots early on can mean far fewer hassles in spring and summer, and may prevent new generations of weeds from cropping up each year.
Lawn and garden experts at The Home Depot suggest filling in bare patches of lawn now by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed. Then apply this patch to the bare areas, water it, and continue to care for the entire area until the spot fills in. Spend a day in the garage or shed tending to the lawn mower and other gardening equipment. Clean all of your tools and ensure that everything works, repairing parts as needed. Give outdoor entertaining spaces a good scrubbing, clearing away dirt and grime that may have accumulated over winter months. Use a leaf blower to blow away any leftover leaves. Book Bracket Delights March Madness may typically refer to college basketball, but in Margaret Meininger’s fifth-grade classroom at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, it’s about books. The class has its own bracket to see which book emerges as the favorite. Students suggested dozens of popular books,
which were then divided into different categories such as biography, novel, poetry and short story. Throughout the month, students select their favorites, and the books with the most votes remain in the competition. There is even a category for authors. Ms. Meininger said that the most exciting part of
the book bracket has been the resulting classroom discussions about literature. “We read every day in here,” she said. “We are very excited to see which book the students pick. It’s a great way to enjoy the different books that we read together and the books we enjoy by ourselves.”

Warm Winter For All Looking for a philanthropic endeavor, sixth-graders at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District recently hosted a successful “Share the Glove” winter clothing drive. Students and staff donated hundreds of cold weather items including earmuffs, gloves, hats, scarves and socks from
Feb. 11 through March 1. Collection bins were set up outside the gymnasium. All items were sorted and given to The Inn in Hempstead, which helps the homeless and lessfortunate families on Long Island. The collection was spearheaded by Class of 2025 officers President Joey Diesso, Vice President Matt Pettis, Secretary Savannah
Harris and Treasurer Kenny Gein, along with their advisors, guidance counselors Victoria Maisano and Melissa Rollin. The students poster fliers around the school promoting the drive. “This was about helping others,” Matt said. “You feel better when you give than when you receive stuff.”

On a set of six shamrocks, children had to figure out the missing number by adding or subrtracting the other two. The six missing numbers together represented a lock combination. For another clue, students had to work through a maze to get to a pot of gold. The first letter of the color of each circle they passed on the successful route was the answer. Each team was only allowed two hints. Fourth-grade teacher Erin Rohan said that the activity incorporated literacy and math skills while helping students develop their problemsolving skills and learning to work well in teams.
