YES Community Counseling Center (YES CCC) is a local non-proﬁt organization with a mission to increase awareness about personal and community issues, prevent and treat substance abuse and to promote healthy families and a safe community. The United States Surgeon General issued an advisory in December 2021, Protecting Youth Mental Health, which spoke to the unprecedented challenges our nation’s children and families face, compounded by the pandemic. Without surprise, the report highlights the growing prevalence of young people experiencing mental health issues and acknowledges risk factors that became more present as a result of COVID-19. Responding to youth and families for the past 45 years and maintaining essential programs throughout the pandemic, YES Community Counseling Center is keenly aware of the growing needs and challenges referenced in the Surgeon General’s advisory. Some good news from the pandemic is that the public has recognized the need to support youth mental health and well-being. Educators supported their students in ways they had never imagined, schools and parents have recognized mental health is an essential part of overall health...mental health conditions are real, common and treatable. Youth experiencing mental health issues deserve support, compassion and care not stigma and shame. Research shows that the most important thing a child needs to be resilient is a stable committed relationship with a supportive adult. So what can parents do? Be a positive role model by taking care of your own mental and physical health. Show positive ways you deal with stress, refrain from unhealthy coping strategies, etc. Emotional Regulation. Practice techniques to manage emotions by ﬁrst

developing emotional intelligence within ourselves and our children. Taking the space between thoughts and behavior to identify feelings and how to effectively communicate those feelings, etc. Talk about the risk of alcohol and drugs. Children are exposed to positive images about alcohol at a very young age. Parents need to counteract those positive messages by communicating the negative impact of alcohol and other drugs in a youth’s developing brain. Look out for warning signs of distress and seek help when needed. Signs of distress include irritability, anger, withdrawal, changes in appearance, performance at school, sleeping or eating patterns. When you notice changes let your child know your concerns and be ready to support them. Seek professional help through your pediatrician if necessary. Manage youth time and activities online. Digital technology has promote both positive and negative experiences. Assess how your child feels after spending time online, etc. YES Community Counseling Center offers a variety of programs for children, teens and parents that support healthy development and strong families. Some testimonies that have been shared by those that received services at YES within the past year are below: My parenting has become more consistent which is in turn helping my kids behave better and strengthening our relationships. The groups have made a tremendous difference for me and my family. It allowed me to navigate my family crisis - several times - with strength and resilience. Berner Students Create A Digital Drug-Free Message

Seventh graders are doing their part to promote healthy lifestyles among their peers with the creation of antidrug books at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. Students in Denise Robertson’s health classes are making the informative digital projects that warn about the dangers of many different substances.

Ms. Robertson explained that the purpose of these student-created books are to present information in a way that’s relatable to others in their age group. Each team was assigned a substance to research and learn about its harmful effects. They had to note its effect on the brain and body, how the drug is taken, slang terms and

whether it is legal or illegal, among other facts. Using Book Creator, every group made a cover page and an informational fact sheet. The completed books were then shared with all sixth and seventh grade health teachers at Berner as an additional educational resource.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to funding research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. Participants raise funds and commit to shaving their heads in a display of solidarity with children affected by cancer who have lost their hair during treatment. Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s events nationwide have helped raise $314 million for lifesaving childhood cancer research.

Saladino Announces Paid Internship Opportunities For College Students Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced the return of internship opportunities for college students who are looking to gain meaningful work experience through an internship program being offered by the Town for the 2022 summer season. “Internship give students an advantage over other job seekers when it comes to work readiness, and I am proud that the Town will once again provide that opportunity for our residents,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This internship program provides an invaluable opportunity for students to receive mentorship

and supervision from experienced government professionals.” This federallyfunded program compensates students at a rate of $18 an hour for work completed within various Town departments. Students will work 19.5 hours per week. The program will operate June 2nd through August 10th. Funds have been granted to the Town by the Oyster Bay-North Hempstead-Glen Cove Workforce Development Board. This internship program offers college students the ability to gain worksite specific knowledge, learn departmental procedures, assist with

general office duties and reports, develop an understanding of worksite specific projects and apply the knowledge gained to benefit the Town of Oyster Bay. College students interested in internship opportunities must apply by April 15th. Applicants must submit a resume with their application, available at oysterbaytown.com/ internship. Saladino, School Board Celebrate Plainedge H.S. Girls Basketball Class “A” Nassau County Championship Title

To improve operations and maximize the delivery of services, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board approved a departmental consolidation and reorganization plan that aims to achieve cost savings for taxpayers through efficiencies. Under the plan, four town departments are consolidated into two departments, and a new town Department of Sanitation is created along with other operational efficiencies. “We examined town operations and best practices with the goal of improving the delivery of services in a cost-conscious manner,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Furthering our commitment to protecting taxpayers, we are moving forward with a departmental consolidation and reorganization plan to bring about greater efficiencies with an eye towards saving money and bettering services for residents.” In an effort to repave a greater number of streets and

better maintain roadways, the Town Board’s action results in the consolidation of the Highway Department into the Department of Public Works (DPW). The goal of this initiative is to build synergy between the Engineering Division of DPW and the men and women of Highway who perform maintenance. By rolling the Department of Highway into DPW, the Town will not have to hire a new Commissioner for a department that no longer exists, thus providing for a savings down the line. Councilman Steve Labriola stated, “The Town Board has been focused on finding savings in every corner of our government. This departmental consolidation will allow us to achieve efficiencies, save taxpayers money and improve the delivery of services.” For more than a year, the Town has examined new ways to deal with sanitation, with the goal of creating a more efficient and

streamlined process for both trash and recyclable waste. Accordingly, a standalone Department of Sanitation was also approved by the Town Board to streamline inter-related sanitation collection operations and recycling collection programs. It replaces the division of sanitation and recycling collection that was currently part of DPW. With an eye toward cost savings and best protecting Mother Earth, this department will have jurisdiction over the Solid Waste Complex and landfill, which has been capped and inactive for years but requires strict adherence to quality control standards and protocols set forth by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and both State and County health departments. Additionally, the Department of Economic Development was consolidated into the Department of Planning and Development.

The Town is accepting applications from qualified, certified individuals interested in

lifeguarding positions at Tappen Beach and Pool in Glenwood Landing, as well as beach facilities in Bayville and Oyster Bay (Centre Island, Ransom, Stehli, and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park), as well as Philip B. Healey Beach in Massapequa, for the upcoming summer season. “Our lifeguards provide

an invaluable service in protecting residents and have helped save countless lives in both pool and ocean waters,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Town lifeguarding staff has a tremendous sense of dedication and understanding of integrity, accountability, and the importance of teamwork.”

Town lifeguards are hired for the summer season, which runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Positions are available at all Town pools and beaches. Applicants must be a minimum of 16 years old, possess a current Lifeguard Certification and a current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
