Game Plan

The cafeteria at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District resembled the games section of a county fair on March 2nd. Thirdgraders presented their cardboard creations, the culmination of weeks of planning and building. The activity was part of the STEAM program in which students explore science, technology, engineering, the arts and

math through hands-on, inquiry-based projects. Lockhart students worked in teams and were tasked with creating a game from a cardboard box. They used the engineering design process as well as their imaginations. Games included fishing, bowling, miniature golf, whack-amole, cornhole and ring toss. The students had to come up with rules and award tickets or prizes.

Students completed their projects under the direction of magnet and STEAM teacher Joanne Markowski along with third-grade teachers Connie-Jo O’Neill, Colleen Kennedy and Katelyn Mulvey. The children tried out each other’s games before parents were invited to come in, explore and play.

point of setting goals at all? Sure, the outcome will always be in question; but this is what makes taking calculated risks - and yes, even the occasional blind leap of faith - necessary. It may not pan out the way you desire; but, on the other end, it just might lead to something even more wonderful in the long run. Who’s to say? If life has taught any of us a fairly universal lesson, it is that there are plenty of things beyond our control, just as many things within our grasp; and, as good or bad as a situation may seem at a particular moment, it is apt to change in the blink of an eye. This is why it’s so incredibly important to hold on to the moments of peace and prosperity, fleeting as they may be, while always driving forward to overcome the obstacles which present themselves. If you run over a few lemons in the process; well, that’s what sometimes leads to the sweetest batches of lemonade.

The above is one of my favorite quotes, penned by American author Lemony Snicket, creator of the famed “Series of Unfortunate Events” books and several other works. A bit tongue in cheek, with a dash of sarcasm, his words have always resonated with me on many levels. Mostly concerning the irony of life as a whole, they offer an undeniable degree of wisdom in between the cynical undertones. I have often been categorized as an unapologetic idealist; which is to say, optimism mixed with a touch of unrealism. Having taken to heart the expression that you can - quite literally - do anything you put your mind to, I see no valid reason why the seemingly

impossible be not, in fact, very possible with the proper balance of dedication and drive. Of course, this concept often involves multiple parties working as one, which is generally where problems come into play. Individually, we can each set our minds to particular goals and aspirations and see through the necessary steps to complete them. The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent notfor-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Welcome to the Club The book club concept has come to Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, where fourthgraders meet to discuss their common reading selections. Recently, students from Jaime Henchy’s and Jessica Shippos’ classes got to together to discuss “The BFG” by Roald Dahl. After reading a certain number

of chapters, the children would get together to talk about developments in the story and make predictions about the plot going forward. The teachers say that book clubs are a great opportunity for them to develop their reading comprehension skills through student-led discussion. They learn to listen to each other’s

thoughts and ideas, but also understand that they don’t always have to agree as long as they engage in respectful dialogue. Students use the stop and jot technique when they read independently, in which they write down their thoughts, observations and questions on Post-it notes. They bring their “jots” to book club to prompt discussion.

Fitness Class Registration Councilman Thomas P. Hand invites residents interested in maintaining or improving their levels of fitness to participate in the Town of Oyster Bay’s popular Co-Ed Fitness Classes, which return this April. The spring fitness classes are for individuals 18 years of age or older and will be held at the Hicksville Athletic Center. “These fitness programs provide a terrific form of aerobic exercise that builds strength as well as increases general flexibility,” said Councilman Hand. “Zumba, Yoga and Pilates are very popular programs

that give residents an outlet to enjoy exercising and staying in shape, all while meeting new people.” Zumba classes will hold two sessions. Residents can choose one session, either Mondays (starting Monday, April 9th from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.) or Wednesdays (beginning Wednesday April 11th from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.). Lacrosse Tournament Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that registration is underway for LAXFEST, a lacrosse tournament for boys PAL teams in grades 2 through 6. The tournament begins Friday, July 20th and run through Sunday, July 22nd, with games being played at both John J. Burns Park and Field of Dreams in Massapequa. “Lacrosse is strongly woven into the fabric of the Long Island community and the Town of Oyster Bay is pleased to partner

with PAL to make this exciting tournament a reality,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We are certainly proud to support PAL with outstanding facilities and assistance. This tournament will feature some the region’s best young lacrosse talent.” Friday games will start at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday games will begin at 8:30 a.m. The entry fee is $750 per team and each is required to provide its own insurance. It is also important to note that each player must have a

U.S. Lacrosse number to be eligible to participate in this event. Polar Plunge Set Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson announce that residents looking for an opportunity to enjoy an exhilarating afternoon of fun and a chance to support a great cause should circle Sunday, March 18th, on their calendar in anticipation of the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County Inc. (CP Nassau) 14th Annual Polar Bear Plunge. The highly-anticipated benefit fundraiser features hearty and caring participants, affectionately known as “Polar Bears,” taking the plunge in the chilly waters off of the Town of Oyster Bay’s Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, Beach and Marina in Oyster Bay. The festivities kick off at 1pm

with the polar bears taking the plunge at 2 p.m. Supervisor Joseph Saladino stated, “The Polar Bear Plunge is a unique charity event, and the Town of Oyster Bay is delighted to host the plunge at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, Beach and Marina. Residents are welcome to participate, have fun and plunge into the cold while warming their heart through this charitable fundraising event.” The day’s festivities will include music, complimentary hot chocolate, coffee, tea, hot dogs, soup from local Oyster Bay establishments, raffles and other surprises. An indoor assembly area will also be available for the event, which will be held rain, snow or shine.

The day’s proceedings will benefit the more than 1,500 children and adults with disabilities who participate in programs and receive services through CP Nassau, which has been assisting individuals with disabilities since 1948. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand today announced the Town will be hosting free blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol screenings throughout 2018 at community centers across the Town of Oyster Bay, and will be done in conjunction with Saint Francis Hospital. “The Town is proud to partner with Saint Francis Hospital through their Community Outreach Van program, and help provide this important and potentially life-saving

service to our residents,” Supervisor Saladino said. “The Community Outreach Van will provide screening for diabetes and cholesterol, take blood pressure, and provide appropriate patient education and referrals as necessary, all while being conveniently located at some of our Town Parks and Community Centers.” Free screenings will be held at the following locations: • March 14th, SyossetWoodbury Community Park

Children’s author and illustrator Lauren Castillo inspired young writers and artists during her visit to Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on February 27th. Listen and Learn After weeks of researching, writing and revising, third-graders shared their completed nonfiction books in Danielle McCaffery’s class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Each student picked

an animal to write about, choosing creatures on land and under the sea. They used their Chromebooks to do research and also reviewed other nonfiction books to analyze writing styles. During the week of February 26th, the

class hosted a writing celebration. A few authors shared their books each day as their classmates gathered on the carpet. The listeners had to fill out a sheet about each book to document what they liked and what they learned.

Pippin on Stage The story of King Charlemagne’s son came to life during Massapequa High School’s production of “Pippin” from March 2nd-4th. The story followed a sorrowful lad who returned from university longing for a life of excitement and adventure. The title role of Pippin was played by Matthew Ferrugia. Other lead roles including Erin Russo

as Catherine, Alexandra Zografos as Fastrada, Zachary Goldberg as Charlemagne, Antoinette Corigliano as Berthe, Christina Scala as Lewis, Nolan Tucker as Theo and Sebastien Diaquoi as Leading Player. The two-act “show within a show” featured two dozen musical numbers. Presented by the music department, there was a Thursday afternoon

performance for senior citizens followed by Friday and Saturday night shows. It was directed by Kathryn Tauches. The pit orchestra was led by Eva Arnold and the technical crew was led by Daniel Wahl. Sets were built and designed by art and technology students under the direction of Gale Domingo and James DeSantis.
