As parents we become confused when, after constant repetition of the same theme, our teens still do not respond. “Active Parenting” is perhaps the most effective program ever offered in the “how to” of raising children and teens. During this time of uncertainty it can be tough for families to keep a sense of calm. But it is important to help our teens feel safe, keep

healthy routines, manage their behaviors and build resilience. Parenting is not easy, Active Parenting can help. Providing access to art for members of the community is one of the missions of the National Art Honor Society chapter at Massapequa High School. The student organization recently hosted two virtual paint nights, which were enjoyed by hundreds of students, parents and other art lovers. This year, families could sign up online for $50 and pick up a kit at the high school that included all of the necessary art supplies. The first event was held on the evening of Feb. 5 and participants painted a lavender field. The second paint night followed on Feb. 12. The theme was “Choose your own citrus fruit” and artists could paint ether a grapefruit, lemon, lime or orange and pick their background color. Honor society coadviser Paul Leone said that about 40 people signed up for the first paint night and about 80 for the second, but the number of actual participants was much higher because each kit included 10 blank canvases. He noted that many families logged in to Google Meet and did their paintings together. Some even shared their extra canvases with friends. Co-presidents Gabrielle Auze and Kayla Hassett were the painting instructors, with Gabrielle leading lavender fields and Kayla guiding citrus fruits. They provided stepby-step instructions and used a portable document camera, the OKIOCAM, to show participants the progression of their paintings. Gabrielle said that the virtual paint nights were a good way of bringing attention to Massapequa High School’s art program. Bridgette Balian, the vice president, noted that it was a safe way for people

to experience an activity that has become very popular in recent years. The honor society hosted paint nights at the school before the pandemic. “It was a fun event that we could we host for everyone else and share our love of art,” added activities coordinator

Mackenzie Becker. Each paint night also featured rafﬂes, as participants had the opportunity to win goodie bags filled with art supplies that were donated by the district’s art teachers.

While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. A Peer-To-Peer Mental Health Lesson Massapequa High School senior Isabella Ritieni recognizes the stress that comes with being a teenager, so recently she connected with students at Berner Middle School to emphasize the importance of mental health and wellness. For her Girl Scout Gold Award project, Isabella created a mental health awareness video for Berner’s seventh graders. The video was shown during health education classes and focused on strategies to cope with everyday stress and anxiety. It also emphasized to students that they are not alone in dealing with these issues and provided contact information for local mental health resources. “I think it came out really great and I think the kids learned a lot,” she said. Isabella, an aspiring

teacher, could not present to health classes in person due to the pandemic, so she decided to make the six-minute video. She also provided a survey to get feedback from students after they viewed the presentation. Her project advisor was Adrienne LoPresti, the associate director of the Massapequa-based YES Community Counseling Center. She also worked with high school social worker Joann Waters, district health education coordinator Denise Baldinger and Berner health education teachers Luana Dunn, Kathleen Meehan and Denise Robertson. Ms. Robertson said all students benefit from peer-to-peer education and Isabella’s video was short but impactful. She noted that after watching the video, many of her seventh graders implemented

some of the stress-release suggestions such as journaling and creating a worry box. Additionally, Ms. Robertson commended Isabella for recognizing the need to have discussions in school about mental health and finding a way to do a meaningful community service project at a time when opportunities are limited. She said the video will become another resource in the mental health curriculum. Isabella has been a member of the Girl Scouts since kindergarten. The Gold Award, the highest honor in the scouts, is earned upon successful completion of a community service project. She began work on her project last summer, and said she chose seventh grade as her target audience so they can take this knowledge into their teen years.

New Ground Appoints Steven Pecorini as Board President New Ground Inc., a local nonprofit that works to break the cycle of homeless for Veterans and families living on Long Island, announced the appointment of Steven Pecorini as President of its Board of Directors. Mr. Pecorini, who joined New Ground’s Board in 2015, succeeds Edward McDougal who served as Board President from 2011-2020. Mr. Pecorini is a pro bono consultant to nonprofits and a retired banking executive. When he left JPMorgan Chase in 2019 after 36 years, Mr. Pecorini’s accomplishments included managing large operating departments, leading financial planning initiatives, and successfully running complex technology projects. He then worked for a year as the Operations Manager with Habitat for Humanity in Nassau County where he performed a wide variety of functions including donor and volunteer management, social media development, and construction coordination. Mr. Pecorini has a MBA from the Columbia Business School and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Williams College. Mr. Pecorini and his wife, Mary, reside in Floral Park and are proud parents of three great sons and a wonderful daughter-in-law, and are brand new grandparents. After learning about the art of letter writing, second graders in Meggin Hall’s class at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District put their new skills into practice. They did so by writing letters to the men and women who have served in the United States military.

Ms. Hall’s students made cards for the Valentines for Veterans program, an annual tradition at East Lake. The children were eager to show their appreciation for veterans by writing personalized messages. They thanked veterans for their service, sacrifice and commitment to their country.

The heart shaped cards featured a colorful stars-and-stripes image on the front and their handwritten letters on the back. Students also included a poem. The cards were sent to the office of Nassau County Executive Laura Curran to be distributed to veterans.

This Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse Experience Makes a Huge Impact on Long Island & Beyond The Farmingville Historical Society was formed in 1992 to preserve and restore the Bald Hills OneRoom Schoolhouse. The Bald Hills Schoolhouse is a one-room Greek Revival Schoolhouse built in 1850. It stands on its original foundation on Horseblock Road in Farmingville and served the Farmingville community until 1929. After 84 years of being closed, the Schoolhouse was re-opened in November 2013 to educate the community through student field trips, history speaker presentations, historic events and now through The Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse.

Girls On The Run Continues To Empower Girls On Long Island Now Offering Virtual And In-Person After-School Teams After a successful fall season, Girls on the Run is back this spring with both virtual and in-person options for girl empowerment in the Long Island area. Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a nonprofit that aims to inspire 3rd- to 8th-grade girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident through running and other physical activity. Each GOTR practice is led by trained volunteers who teach important life lessons such as standing up for oneself, setting and achieving goals, and managing emotions. This past fall Girls on the Run quickly adapted its research-based curriculum and engaging programming to serve girls in the community amidst the global pandemic. Practices are already held outdoors. At practices, participants and coaches maintain social distance and utilize extra sanitation materials. On bad weather days, rain dates or virtual lessons that mirror the in-person lessons can be used if necessary. More than 100 girls participated in the fall and coaches, caregivers, and Girls on the Run staff were all inspired by the results. “This has been such a positive experience for our daughter! We have even noticed a very positive change in her overall attitude and behavior!” –Parent of 4th grade fall season participant. “I wasn’t so sure when my husband signed up our daughter for this program as she’s not very athletic, but I was wrong. She really enjoyed it and looked forward

to going to practice every Wednesday and Friday. And the best part, she met new friends. Thank you!” –Parent of 5th grade fall season participant. In the spring, the organization will host both in-person and all-virtual teams during its 8-week program. Thanks to the generosity of donors and sponsors, Girls on the Run is able to offer financial assistance to ensure no girl is ever turned away due to her financial situation.

Like the fall, Girls on the Run will continue to follow protocols to keep girls and coaches safe and adhere to all local COVID-19 guidelines. Flexible programming will allow all in-person lessons to transition to a virtual platform if needed, and a 100% virtual program will also be offered as select sites for the 8-week spring season. Spring 2021 Program This 8-week program begins the week

of March 22. Teams of 3rd-5th grade girls will practice twice a week for 75 minutes. Teams are available throughout Nassau County and parts of Suffolk County. Girls will complete their end-of-season celebratory 5K on Saturday, June 5th at their respective sites, adhering to local guidelines. Registration is currently open as room is available for our 15-person teams. Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) is partnering with YES Community Counseling Center (YESCCC) to provide Opioid Abuse and Overdose Prevention Education for families and concerned community members on Thursday, March 25th at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom. Expanding the awareness and availability of naloxone is a key part of YESCCC and MTAC’s public health response to the opioid epidemic. YESCCC continues to deliver FREE opioid prevention education and naloxone training across the Massapequas including local governments, first responders, schools, organizations, parents, and residents. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that is used to temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, namely slowed or stopped breathing. T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Kathy is a 74 year old resident of Middle Island who was nominated by one of her friends. She has trouble hearing, but continues to be an active participant in the Catholic Daughters of America and the first one to jump in and help out, according to her nominator. She is also very active in the parish senior club and pre-COVID she attended all the functions. Kathy needed hearing aids, but could not afford them on her fixed income. However, after being nominated and chosen, The Twilight Wish Foundation was able to grant her wish of receiving hearing aids! This was a life changing experince for all involved.

Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Please note, when going to grant a wish, this foundation takes all the necessary safety precautions. If you would like to get involved with The Twilight Wish Foundation, you can! Berner Students And Staff Are ‘Souper’ Generous It may have been called the “Souper Bowl” but students and staff at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School weren’t limited to bringing in just soup for the annual February food drive. Any non-perishable goods, such as canned vegetables and boxes of macaroni, were welcome. The Chief’s Challenge club, under the direction of adviser Caroline Glynn, hosted the food collection in the week leading up to

the biggest football game of the year. They promoted the drive by hanging up posters around the school, and their efforts were successful as students and staff donated several hundred items in just three days. Students also watched a video about childhood hunger during homeroom to learn about the need. There were two boxes in the auditorium lobby, one for each of the two teams playing in the game, so donors could place food in

the box of the team they thought would win. All donations were given to YES Community Counseling Center in Massapequa, which operates a food pantry. Chief’s Challenge member Mia Giannico said the food drive is important at this time of year because many food pantries have a decline in donations after the holiday surge, yet the need to provide for hungry STUDENTS AND STAFF ARE ‘SOUPER’ GENEROUS - Berner Middle School’s families on Long Island Chiefs Challenge Club held its annual “Souper Bowl” food drive for the YES Community Counseling Center food pantry.
