The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams.
The BRIDGES program also includes on site recovery support groups, drop-in hours and wellness/self-care workshops and it provides prevention programs and self-care workshops to staff, students and young adults at high schools, colleges and other organizations.

Fundraising is vital to the survival of many nonprofit organizations. Charity watchdog groups like Charity Navigator suggest nonprofits should aspire to spend less than 10 percent of their budgets on fundraising. That can be a tall task and underscores the need for charities to find creative, cost-effective ways to raise funds. Nonprofit organizations raise funds in various ways. Some organizations partner with local businesses and receive a portion of the proceeds participating establishments earn on certain days, while other organizations may cold call prospective donors during times of the year when giving to charity tends to increase, such as the holiday season. Activitydriven fundraisers are another popular way for nonprofit organizations to raise funds, and these endeavors can be highly effective. What are activity-driven
fundraisers? Activity-driven fundraisers focus on an engaging activity that encourages supporters to actively participate in an effort to raise funds. The Ice Bucket Challenge is one of the more notable activity-driven fundraisers in recent years. Participants in the challenge would pour a bucket of ice water over their heads or the head of another person, and then challenge or nominate another person to follow suit. Participants also would urge donations to support research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, an incurable motor neuron disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Additional examples of activity-driven fundraisers are runs and walks in which participants solicit donations from supporters that increase with each mile they walk or run. The American Cancer Society’s Breast Cancer Awareness 5K walk and fun run is one popular activity-
driven fundraiser that annually attracts sizable numbers of participants and donors. Are activity-driven fundraisers effective? The sheer volume of activity-driven fundraisers makes it more difficult to gauge the success of these events. However, a recent study from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that people are inclined to contribute more when the experience is painful and labor-intensive. That suggests that activity-driven fundraisers like charity runs can be highly effective and lucrative ways to raise money. Indeed, various estimates suggest the Ice Bucket Challenge raised more than $220 million worldwide. Nonprofit organizations raise funds in myriad ways. Activity-driven fundraisers are among the more engaging, and often successful, ways to raise money for a good cause.

Councilman Laura Maier announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay will host a Pet Food & Supply Drive in partnership with LI Cares. The drive will take place from March 15th to April 15th with a focus on collecting for the family members most vulnerable to hunger, residents’ pets. Long Island Cares formed Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 to assist in feeding dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members. “Pets truly are members of our family,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Pet food and supply donations will help furry friends in need, which in turn keeps pets at home with their loved ones. The Town of Oyster
Bay is proud to partner with LI Cares to collect generous donations for this worthwhile cause.” The creation of Baxter’s Pet Pantry by Long Island Cares has helped distribute over one million pounds of pet food, all of which has been donated through pet food drives like this one and corporate donations. “Unfortunately many beloved pets are placed into shelters or given away because families cannot afford the necessary food and supplies,” added Councilwoman Maier. “When struggling families have to make choices to heat their homes, buy medication or feed their own families, pets can become an afterthought. As businesses, we were gratified when New York State passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) in 2019. The CLCPA provides a road map for our state to reach a renewable energy economy, which will not only combat the devastation and unpredictability of the climate crisis but will lead to greater economic opportunity for New Yorkers as the state creates green jobs and invests in frontline communities.
Thriving communities for businesses to flourish: Thriving communities are good for business. According to the investment plan laid out by NY Renews, in addition to funding renewable energy investments, the $15 billion fund will also go towards improving public transit, public housing, and public schools, all necessary infrastructure for communities to succeed. Additional funding will go towards community-based organizations in neighborhoods most impacted by pollution and the climate crisis to fund local projects that increase our renewable energy supply, make homes and buildings more efficient, and increase resilience to climate change. A significant portion of this funding will go to low-income communities of color, which have received historically inadequate investments from the state and are most vulnerable to pollution and climate change. All of these investments will help New York communities thrive.
This is why we strongly encourage you to allocate, at minimum, $15 billion in climate, jobs, and justice funding in this year’s New York State budget. These funds will benefit businesses and the communities which we serve in a multitude of ways: Creating jobs and increasing spending power: Investing $15 billion yearly in climate, jobs, and justice will create and sustain 150,000 good-paying jobs over the next decade. Creating stable jobs in renewable energy, building efficiency, public transit, and supportive industries will grow New York’s economy and increase spending power. This is good for New Yorkers, and it’s good for business. New York has the opportunity to be a business leader in renewable energy specifically, creating these jobs here in our state rather than allowing other states to overtake us in this critical and growing market. All jobs created — in renewable energy and otherwise — are good news for New York.
It’s clear that this $15 billion investment makes good business sense for New York. We strongly encourage the governor and legislature to include this funding in this year’s New York State budget.

Stable investments in building a renewable energy economy: Under the CLCPA, New York must run on 100% renewable electricity by 2040, and our entire economy must be carbon-neutral by 2050. We have made pitiful progress: just 31% of our electric generation comes from renewable sources, and since 2019, we have reduced our economy-wide emissions by only 6%. Moreover, New York currently sends over $30 billion out of state every year to purchase fossil fuels. This lack of progress is concerning for businesses: we want to be able to count on a consistent energy transition along with — or faster than — the timeline outlined in the CLCPA. We need to know that the laws of our state will be followed. New York has had three years to try to meet its own timelines without significantly increasing financial

These payments will ensure working New Yorkers will have more spending power and more breathing room, which is good for business and good for our state.

In recent years, however, we’ve become concerned that the CLCPA has not been funded. It’s clear that New York needs significant and consistent funding allocations to meet the goals of the CLCPA and realize the benefits of the law for New Yorkers. By allowing the law to remain an unfunded mandate, Albany will create an unstable situation for businesses and leave significant economic benefits on the table.

In support of their mission of giving back to veterans and first responders, nonprofit Paws of War recently hosted their “Hearts and Heroes” event at their headquarters in Nesconset, where they provided 27 service animals with free veterinary care, which included wellness checks, flea and tick medications, vaccinations, bags of dog food and microchipping service. The pandemic has brought financial challenges to veterans and first responders Many disabled veterans live on low or fixed incomes and their service animal’s medical care is essential so they can provide the level of support and comfort upon which the veterans depend. “As a former veteran, I know how critical and expensive it is to take care of these service animals.
