100 Days Smarter The 100th day of the school year was a milestone celebrated in elementary classrooms throughout the Massapequa School District on February 14th. Students participated in various literacy, math, art and physical activities. At McKenna Elementary School, children rotated through different centers. Kindergartners did 10 sets of 10 different exercises, colored paper snakes that were 100 inches long and stacked 100 plastic cups. Each student was also given a snack that looked

like “100” - a pretzel stick and two cookies. Firstgraders customized their own T-shirts and wore special crowns. They also counted how many times they could perform certain tasks in 100 seconds, like clapping their hands and saying the alphabet. East Lake Elementary School’s first-graders did 100 exercises, rolled dice to get to 100 and created gumball machines by making colored dots on paper plates in five sets of 20. The children listened to the story, “The 100th

Day of School,” then drew pictures and wrote sentences about the best part of the school year so far. Second-grade teacher Christine Marshall had her students participate in 100 minutes of reading. Children rotated through different literacy centers including independent, partner and group reading, sight word beanbag toss, Valentine’s Day reader’s theater and Chromebook activities.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go When I graduated from high school, I was given the noted Dr. Seuss book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” as a symbolic gesture of good luck toward any and all future pursuits. I since came to learn that this particular gift has been somewhat of a tradition for those moving onward and upward in life - no matter the age. Of course, the places outlined in the magical land of Seuss are not so much literal; but, rather, a figurative representation of the adventures which await those on the brink of adulthood, the endless potential for exploration and the Great Places which exist just over yonder. The poem reads like a veritable how-to, designed to assist in navigating the twists and turns life is sure to reveal in the years to come. Nearly 20 years beyond this stepping stone, the words

ring just as true: “Step with care and great tact… and remember that Life’s A Great Balancing Act.” Indeed it is. I recently listened to a podcast which analyzed the age-old query of whether happiness leads to success, or vice versa. Like the chicken/ egg debate, there is of course no concrete answer; however, most research seems to suggest that happiness is the starting point from which the greatest success blossoms. To be in a positive state is to have a productive, constructive mindset, making growth that much easier. Delving deeper into the topic, it was stated that those who attempt to find that tedious work/life “balance” are often misdirected in their goal. In reality, these elements will never truly exist in the perfect proportion we strive for, as our existence - and all the elements which affect

it - are in a continuous state of flux. Rather, the objective should be to find a place of fulfillment within, making the necessary adjustments along the way as we navigate those same twists and turns predicted by Dr. Seuss all those years ago. Taking this lesson into a geographic territory, it was recently brought to my attention that the passport I obtained some five years ago is nearly halfway to its expiration date, having been used precisely once on my very first international flight - first flight anywhere, in fact - to the Emerald Isle. Where to next? The fact is, it doesn’t really matter. Anywhere will do, so long as it brings pleasure and adventure and a newfound sense of discovery. Your mountain is waiting. So . . . get on your way!

The Sergeant Peter F. Colleran, Jr. Post 7763 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Massapequa Park conducts its annual Poppy Drive during the month of May each year. The money raised through the generosity of the residents, businesses and individuals who donated this past May has enabled Post 7763 to continue providing assistance to veterans in need. The idea of sponsoring a service dog

to assist a veteran in need was considered. America’s VetDogs organization, located in Smithtown, was contacted and provided a speaker to inform the Post officers and members about sponsorship opportunities for their service dog program. The speaker, Cliff Miller, informed the members in November that, “All of the Americas’ VetDogs begin their journey as puppies before starting

their training as service dogs. Sponsorship helps to defray the expenses of the breeding, birth, veterinary services and early training of the puppy, all of which are necessary for the journey to service dog to begin.” The officers and members unanimously agreed at the Post December meeting to sponsor a service dog for a veteran in need. Jaime McGrade, Community Fundraising/ Events Manager for the

America’s VetDogs, was contacted and informed of the decision to sponsor a service dog. Arrangements were made for VFW Post 7763 Commander William Colfer, Poppy Chairman Richard Magee and Quartermaster Arthur Krumm to present a check for $6,000 for sponsorship of a puppy to Ms. McGrade at America’s VetDogs facility in Smithtown on January 22nd. And so the journey begins for a puppy to one day help a veteran live without boundaries. Since 2003, America’s VetDogs (VetDogs.org) has trained and placed guide and service dogs to provide independence, enhanced mobility and companionship to veterans with disabilities from all eras. In 2015, VetDogs opened its programs to first responders, including fire, police

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

to succeed. Below, you will see a photo of Purity Kanyiri, a 5 year-old girl in need of a sponsor. Purity attends nursery preschool at Gikumene Primary and resides at this orphanage. Embracing germs: They’re not all bad

erms have gotten a somewhat undeserved reputation. For decades, people have done what they can to avoid these unseemly organisms, thinking that exposure to germs is the single-best way to get and remain sick. Certainly, there are germs that a person would be wise to avoid. However, not all germs must be avoided. Germs are tiny organisms that can enter the body through open cuts, the mouth, the nose and the eyes. Germs are found all over the world. The four main types of germs include bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. Bacteria are a type of germ that often get a bad rap but actually may have beneﬁts that outweigh their negatives.

People frequently overlook good bacteria in an effort to eradicate bad bacteria, and that can have serious detriments. Unfortunately, the “antibacterial” products available for cleaning and medicines used for treating bacterial illnesses do not discriminate between good and bad germs. They simply eradicate them all. Heathline says that this can create an imbalance of bacteria in the body that may lead to harmful bacteria taking over. Harmful bacteria also may evolve to resist common treatments because of the overuse of antibacterial and antimicrobial medicines and products. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that antimicrobial agents have been used for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases.

Although they’ve helped treat illnesses, these drugs have enabled the organisms they’re meant to destroy to adapt to them, making the drugs less effective. Some bacteria are even resistant to certain antibacterial drugs. The CDC says each year in the United States at least two million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics — with at least 23,000 people dying as a result of these infections. Various medical sources urge that regular handwashing with plain soap is enough for cleansing. Consuming foods with naturally occurring helpful organisms, such as yogurt, chocolate, feta cheese, pickles and dark chocolate, can help increase the levels of good bacteria in the body. Taking a probiotic supplement also may help, although researchers at the Cleveland Clinic report that there is not enough proof to say for sure. People should speak with their doctors before taking probiotics or other steps to increase bacteria to make sure they are a wise decision for each individual.

Such activities should not necessarily be avoided, but it’s important that men and women not push themselves to the point of overexertion when performing them. Stay hydrated. Muscle soreness may appear if men and women are not drinking enough water before, during or after their workouts. A dehydrated body’s muscles do not have enough electrolytes, and that can be contributing to the feelings of soreness some exercise enthusiasts feel. Drink lots of water throughout the day, and don’t forget to bring a water bottle along to the gym when working out. Muscle soreness can be painful and difﬁcult to deal with. But the solution to address such soreness is oftentimes very simple.

ain in the lower extremities may be indicative of a condition called peripheral artery disease, or PAD. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute says PAD occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to the limbs, head and organs, contributing to atherosclerosis, or a hardening of the arteries. Blocked blood ﬂow and eventual limited oxygen supply to these areas can cause pain and numbness. When severe enough, PAD may lead to tissue death. Discomfort due to PAD usually occurs when a person is walking or exercising, because the muscles are not getting enough blood during these activities to meet their needs, says the American Heart Association. Those with diabetes may confuse pain with neuropathy, and the elderly may think pain from PAD is a normal sign of aging and stiffness.

When undiagnosed, PAD can lead to further complications, including increased risk for heart attack, stroke and coronary artery disease. Even amputation of a limb may be necessary. However, PAD is preventable when taking a few steps to improve diet. According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people

in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption and lower PAD risk remained even after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status and various cardiovascular risk factors. Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary ﬁber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of ﬁsh and dairy; and limited meat and meat products. Peripheral artery disease can be a warning sign of cardiovascular trouble. Altering one’s diet may help naturally prevent or treat this condition.

However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection. CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “braineating” amoeba.

TOOTH TRIBUTE - Kindergarten students at Unqua Elementary School learned about brushing, flossing and other ways to keep their teeth clean and healthy during a program on February 9th. DIVISION III CHAMPIONS - The St. Dominic’s Varsity Boys swim team won the Division III Championship, the first time in history for the Bayhawks. In addition, the team was a runner-up in the Division III Dual Meet! The team was lead by Coach Caitlin Meoni. These boys swam their hearts out this season and finished with a record of 7-3.

As part of their science unit on natural resources and recycling, kindergartners reused different materials to make their own robots at

for a robot that could perform a common task such as cooking, cleaning, brushing teeth and doing homework. Magnet and STEAM teacher Lorie Moran said the children were encouraged to “go through their junk drawers” and bring in objects to help build their robots. Some of the materials included cardboard tubes, bottle caps and plastic utensils. Mixing and Mingling Students broke out of their lunchtime routines during Mix It Up at Lunch Day at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School Day, an initiative designed to foster new friendships. During the two-day program, students in fourth and fifth grades were randomly assigned lunch tables. Mix It Up at Lunch Day is an international campaign by Teaching Tolerance encouraging children to expand their social boundaries. The goal is to empower students to be proactive about caring, acting responsibly

and being all-embracing when it comes to their peer relations. It was spearheaded at Lockhart by social worker Kerry Rivera. On the first day, children picked colored pom poms from a bag and sat at the table with the corresponding color. Prompted by conversation question cards, they participated in discussions to learn more about each other. Students picked colors again on the second day, and this time played games such as tic-tactoe, word searches and crossword puzzles while working together.

Ms. Rivera said that students completed an online survey after the two days and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Most students stated that they had learned something new about those they sat next to and that most spoke to people outside their normal friend group. “The purpose of this was for the students to form new connections with their peers,” she said. “It was great to watch them engage with each other and most everyone thought it was a great experience.”

Celebrating Customs language teacher at Berner and Massapequa High School, taught the students various phrases relating the holiday in Mandarin Chinese. She also discussed Chinese New Year customs and

traditions.
