Does anything else even need to be said? Animals bring us so much joy, unconditional love, centeredness and clarity. Growing up, my parents were “not animal people” as they would often remind me at the mere mention of wanting a dog. I never experienced the joy and responsibility of having a pet when I was growing up. As a result, it just wasn’t on my radar as a kid, or even in my early twenties. At the age of twenty-nine, I found myself newly single, living in New York City and yearning for something or someone to care for other than myself. Without overthinking it, I adopted a two month old Shih Ztu and brought him home. With no idea of how to take care of a dog, I stumbled into a pet shop where I was loaded down with puppy food, vitamins, wee wee pads, a bed, a brush, food/water bowls and just about every other accoutrement you can think of. I can remember the first time I let this pup run loose in my tiny studio apartment. He was a ball of energy; a little white pouf ball of love as he snuggled up close in my
lap. I named him Francis Albert after Frank Sinatra, of course, which later incarnated to Frankie. Frankie was my first official family member. Not the family I was born into, but the family I would create on my own. He was there before my marriage and before my son. At one point in time, it was just me and Frankieboy. When my son was born, we hemmed and hawed about how Frankie may react to a new baby in the house. Would he behave? Would we have to worry? From the moment we brought our son home from the hospital, Frankie took on the role of pseudo-nanny (yes, like in Peter Pan); watching over the crib, alerting us when the baby was crying, and gently laying down next to our newborn son when he took his naps. It was astonishing; even more so, since Frankie-boy was not exactly known for exemplary behavior. In fact, he flunked out of dog obedience school. True story. As my son grew, it was so much fun to watch the two of them play together and bond. Rolling in the grass, playing ball or fetch, and
running around the house or the yard. It would always bring a smile to my face. Now, at fourteen, Frankie is getting on in years as my son is getting stronger and stronger and hitting his stride. I know there will come a time when Frankie is no longer with us, and it is hard to imagine. We still keep him running for exercise and we love him up as much as we can. I will always be grateful to him for teaching me how to care for another living being back when it was just me and him. These days, there is another dog in the fold, our Pitbull mix, Boris. To see this little Shih Ztu and large Pitbull get on together is a riot. They vacillate between rivalry and playfulness. Add my two favorite horses, Kingston in Melville, New York, and Lucky the beautiful Arabian, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, into the mix and I just can’t imagine a life without animals around me. I am so glad that my son is growing up experiencing the joy that animals bring.

Third-graders are digging deep into other cultures at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Each student in Danielle McCaffery’s class has been assigned a country to research in the social studies project. Children are using
Chromebooks to look up facts about their assigned countries such as cultural aspects and geographical features. Online resources available through the district website include PebbleGo and the World Book. Library books are also serving as key informational sources.

MATH REVIEW MADE FUN - To review a math lesson on angles, lines and points, fourth-graders in Theresa LiCausi’s class answered questions using the interactive trivia game Kahoot at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. making any significant dietary changes. Discuss any inflammation issues you have been having and which foods might help. Generally speaking, a diet full of diverse, antioxidant-rich foods can provide relief for those with various levels of inflammation.

Sleep Like a Child Again

any adults lament that even if they were solid sleepers in their younger years, by the age of 50, their quality of sleep has unraveled. Some cling to the wisdom that people simply do not need as much sleep as they get older. Even though that is partly true, sufficient sleep is still a vital component of a healthy life.
Many older adults do not get enough sleep due to insomnia, states Jack Gardner, MD, a neurologist certified in sleep medicine. They’re concerned about health issues, may have sleep apnea, can experience pain or frequent urination, or may be taking medication that impedes sleep. Dr. Leila Kheirandish-Gozal, director of clinical sleep research at the University of Chicago, says that, over time, insufficient sleep can impact metabolism, mood, memory, and heart function. Various strategies can help people get more sleep and enjoy better sleep quality.

Create a luxury bed environment Splurge on the largest mattress you can afford and one that is comfortable for both parties (if married/coupled). A roomy bed routinely invites sleep. If you have a restless partner, try two separate beds pushed against each other.
Keep electronics out of the bedroom It can be challenging to disconnect from electronics, but it is essential to falling asleep. Even a back-lit text coming through in the wee hours can be enough illumination to disrupt sleep. See your doctor If medications or illnesses are keeping you up, a change in regimen may provide the relief you need. Older adults can learn the steps to sleeping more soundly and easily. Check your pillow Take into consideration whether you are a side sleeper, a back sleeper or stomach sleeper, as there are pillows designed for all three sleeping styles. Some stores now feature more custom pillows with different levels of firmness, bounce back ability and even temperature. Yes, temperature. If you’re always struggling to get the cold side of the pillow, consider a “Cool Pillow,” that stays perpetually cool throughout the night. Proper Breathing Slow, relaxed breathes from your diaphram, versus quick, shallow chest breathes can mean the difference between drifting off or staying alert. The National Sleep Foundation recently updated its sleep recommendations per age group to include categories “may be appropriate” and “not recommended.” This includes a range of hours that may be adequate for certain adults. Adults between the ages of 26 and 65 are advised to get seven to nine hours of sleep per evening. However, six hours or 10 hours also may be acceptable. People over the age of 65 need roughly seven to eight hours of sleep each night, though between five and six hours also may be fine. Generally speaking, anything under five hours is not recommended based on data reviewed by sleep experts.

“Helping Both Ends of The Leash” Paws of War is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military Veterans who suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each V e t e r a n can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love that only a companion animal can bring! Since 2014, Paws of War has supported over 100 Veterans with service dogs rescued from kill shelters.

If you work or volunteer at a shelter and have a special dog that you believe would be a good match for a Veteran in need, you can submit a short video and biography of the dog to Paws of War through their website! They will then consider your rescued dog for their program once they have received all the information you can provide. All dogs that will be considered must be rescued/ shelter dogs, social, healthy, eager to please, good with other dogs and good with people.
You can also donate to Paws of War to help them carry out their mission. Individuals can donate on their website or by mail. There is truly no donation amount that is too small. They would not be able to carry out their mission of helping both ends of the leash without the generosity of their supporters. All donations are taxdeductible.
This organization relies heavily on devoted volunteers to continue providing their services. With such a small staff, Paws of War depends on the generosity of volunteers to support their fundraising efforts, to provide support to veterans and to help out with their dogs. School librarian Michelle Robinson observed students from three different grade levels in action. They explained that they are looking to expand their elementary library program, and were impressed by Massapequa’s innovation. Second-graders used Chromebooks to do research, and Ms. Mitchell showed them how to access information from PebbleGo, a child friendly database. Fifth-graders, who were in the midst of their biography unit, used an app called We Video to create digital reports about their subjects. A third-grade class spent most of their library period down the hall in the Makerspace room, where the Smithtown librarians saw collaboration in action. Ms. Mitchell and technology learning coach Vickie Ahearn spearheaded a stop-motion animation activity. After reading
“Balloons Over Broadway” about the founder of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, students worked in small groups and made balloons, floats and puppets. They took pictures on iPads in front of different backgrounds using a stop-motion app. The short segments would be combined for a classwide parade video. Ms. Mitchell’s adapts her library curriculum to support the classroom teachers. Students participate in engaging activities that are relevant to lessons in their other subject areas, while developing communication, critical thinking and problemsolving skills and using their creativity. “Libraries can be such an asset to their academic lives,” Ms. Farrell said. “Our library media specialists, like Ms. Mitchell, keep the idea of libraries so relevant to our students.”

Two representatives from Smithtown made the 25-mile trip to Fairfield Elementary School on Jan. 30 to learn more.
