FCA’s original orphanage, the Temporary Home for Children, was founded in 1884. Louisa Lee Schuyler, great-granddaughter of Alexander Hamilton, spearheaded the establishment of the orphanage. During this upcoming Women’s History Month, Family & Children’s Association will be honoring Louisa Lee Schuyler’s vision by joining forces with some of the most inﬂuential female philanthropists and business owners across Long Island with its inaugural Long Island Women in Philanthropy Breakfast & Fashion Show. FCA is extremely proud to represent a female majority workforce, including its management. All of its ﬁve divisions are led by women in Assistant Vice President roles and the organization as a whole is very excited about this new initiative; their goal is to bring together like-minded women in our local community.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the 11th Annual Town of Oyster Bay Long Island Blues Winter Classic will take place on Saturday, March 5th at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center. This special event showcases LI Blues hockey players with special needs enjoying a game they love verse three other teams from the tri-state area. Councilman Hand Invites Residents To Apply For Picnic Permits Online Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand announced that residents are invited to apply for picnic permits online at www. oysterbaytown.com/ picnic. As a part of the Town’s commitment to digitizing services for the convenience of all, these online reservations are valid for picnics at Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay, Harry Tappen Beach and Marina in Glenwood Landing, SyossetWoodbury Community Park, and Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park. “Our beautiful Town Parks are the perfect

location for a family, school, or community group outing set in the great outdoors. Each location, from Teddy Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay to Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa, offers something unique for residents to enjoy,” Councilman Hand said. “Thanks to the hard work of our Parks Department, the process to apply for a picnic permit has now been streamlined to increase convenience and accessibility for residents.” Picnic Permits are required for groups of 25 or more at all Town of Oyster Bay picnic pavilion locations and include exclusive use of the permitted area from

Local Author Promotes Literacy Long Island author Jen Calonita has some inspiring words for young readers and writers at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District during a visit on Feb. 10. Specializing in fractured fairy tales, she shared her expertise as a writer of several middle-grade and young adult books. During a pair of assemblies, Ms. Calonita spoke about her love for writing, which developed in elementary school,

as well as her career transition from magazine editor to author. She also discussed how reading and writing go hand-in-hand. The morning kicked off with a bagel and books breakfast. Fourteen students from grades 3-5 were invited for a smallgroup meeting with Ms. Calonita. Library media specialist Tara Gonzalez said that interested students were asked to write a short essay on what it would mean for them to have breakfast with an

author. Later in the day, Ms. Calonita hosted a writer’s workshop for fourth and fifth graders. Together they developed an original fractured fairy tale. “This was a great experience for Lockhart students,” Ms. Gonzalez said. “We want to inspire their love of reading and help them see themselves as authors, and we thank Ms. Calonita for her guidance and encouragement.”

Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Kevan M. Abrahams (D - Freeport) urged Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman to immediately extend the deadline for residents to file assessment challenges with Nassau County’s Assessment Review Commission (ARC) to Monday, May 2. In a Monday, Jan. 31 letter to County Executive Blakeman, Minority Leader Abrahams wrote that the extension is necessary due to the “myriad of economic challenges that have been caused by COVID-19 and the ongoing disruption to the housing market because of the pandemic.” “It is therefore our shared

belief that an extension to the filing deadline, similar to the extensions provided in previous years and even predating the pandemic, is necessary to ensure that residents have a full opportunity to robustly exercise their rights as Nassau County property owners,” Minority Leader
