Our January General Meeting was at Mario’s Pizzeria Restaurant. We had a great turnout of our business members, and all enjoyed each other’s company. The February General Meeting will be held at Sal’s Place, and we will once again honor the local volunteer firefighters from the Massapequas who proudly serve in those positions. The Long Island Pet Expo returns for the first time since the outbreak of COVID on March 5-6, 2022, with fur flying entertainment, dog sporting competitions and educational programs designed for the whole family. The event returns to the Suffolk Federal Credit Union Arena and features many special attractions, pet adoptions and outstanding shopping for pet lovers and their pets. “The Long Island area is passionate about animals and pets of all kinds,” said show co-producer Karen Garetano of Family Pet Shows, which runs seven similar events in the northeast. “We are excited to be back in the area after a long, unplanned break. The number of pet licenses
in the region has almost doubled since the start of COVID, and the interest in the event seems to have doubled too based on our phones and social media activity.” The 80+ special exhibits always feature some of the hottest new products coming out often before they hit the retail shelves. Dogs on leashes are always welcome, and several area rescue groups with adoptable pets will be on hand. Popular performers and presenters include Diana Frohman and her beautiful Dancing Dogs. Schutzhund Demonstration by Maximum K9 Service , the Dog Lovers Days Lure Course, Johnny Peers Muttville Mix, Doggie U K9 Academy Rainforest Reptiles, TICA
Championship Cat Shows and more. “We always have fun at these events, but we also are strong supporters of responsible pet ownership and humane values when it comes to all issues involving animals and pets,” said Garetano. “We partner with several community organizations, shelters, veterinarians and other animal lovers educate and inform when it comes to best practices for training, feeding and all aspects of pet care.” Community and rescue organizations participating in the show include Tylers Rescue, Chippy’s Angels to the Rescue, Haven Animal Foundation, Last Chance Animal Rescue, Pet Partners, LI Golden Retriever Rescue, and more The event is expected to draw over 10,000 attendees over the weekend. Admission is Adults $15, Kids 3-11 are $6, and those under three years old are always free. Saturday March 5th the hours are 10 am to 7 pm, and on Sunday, March 6th, from 10 am to 5pm. There are two important components to any children’s story – the words and the pictures. It was the latter that children explored at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District during a visit from illustrator Anna Raff. Ms. Raff, an awardwinning fiction and nonfiction illustrator with more than a dozen books on her resumé, spoke to students on Feb. 4 to kick off East Lake’s Pick a Reading Partner program. The assembly was coordinated by
library media specialist Anna Schwen and reading teachers Carmen Keany, Christina Lipori and Jennifer Ragona, and presented in partnership with the PTA’s Arts in Education committee. In her presentation to kindergartners and first graders, Ms. Raff read, “You Are Not a Cat!” and did a drawing demonstration to show how she captures emotion in illustration. With second graders, she read, “A Big Surprise for Little Card,” and talked about creating characters. East Lake’s oldest readers
heard about the illustration and publishing processes. Each session ended with a question and answer session, in which students were inquisitive about her path to becoming a published illustrator. “I hope that the children are inspired to read more book,” she said. Ms. Raff was warmly greeted by student-made posters and bulletin board displays celebrating many of her books. Additionally, she personally signed copies of any of her books that children purchased in advance of her visit.

Students Put A Modern Twist On Books Book Creator because it allowed them to customize their designs, picking the fonts, colors and layout. The books needed to include text features such as pictures with captions, a table of content, glossary and a dedication page. Many students also chose to embed videos to liven up their digital books.

According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.
