Town Recognizes Massapequa High School Senior for Rare Perfect Score
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and his colleagues on the Town Board recognized Massapequa High School Senior Sarah Popeck for her incredible accomplishment of receiving a perfect score on the Advanced Placement Research exam. Sarah is one of only 375 students
worldwide to earn the top mark. “It is so special to know that one of the very few students to earn a perfect score was raised and taught in our Town,” said Councilwoman Laura Maier. “Sarah’s hard work and dedication is remarkable and we wish her continued success.”
Sarah’s impressive achievements also extend beyond the classroom. She serves as the Northeast regional technologist for a non-profit organization aimed at gun violence prevention, citing engaging social studies teachers as her inspiration for becoming involved in such a worthy cause.
Upcoming Free Virtual Community Tax Grievance Workshops
Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D-Lawrence) is partnering with the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission (ARC) to host free virtual community tax grievance workshops on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, 2 p.m. and Thursday, February 24, 2022, 7 p.m. to inform residents about how to challenge their property
taxes online. During these virtual workshops, taxpayers who disagree with the assessed value of their property can learn how to navigate the online grievance process. Questions can be submitted via chat to the representatives from ARC. They will be answered after the presentations or the representatives will contact you directly.

NMFD’s William Gruener Installed As President Of The Nassau County Fire Police Association
The North Massapequa Fire Department is proud to announce that William Gruener of Ladder Company #1 was recently installed as President of the Nassau County Fire Police Association. The organization supports the many volunteer fire police units throughout Nassau County and their ongoing efforts to keep first responders safe by controlling vehicle traffic at emergency scenes. “It is
a difficult and sometimes dangerous job and we truly appreciate the efforts of our fire police,” said North Massapequa Fire Department Chief of Department Mark J. Frascella. “Bill has more than sixty years in the volunteer fire service and has always been extremely dedicated to this department and the community. I know he will bring that same level of commitment as President
of the Nassau County Fire Police Association.” Chief Frascella also noted that Firefighter Gruener is a proud Korean War Veteran, having served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955 and is a member of the New York State Chaplain’s Association. Administering the oath of office was North Massapequa Fire District Commissioner and ExChief James M. Maroldo.

New York Farm Bureau Seeking 2022 Scholarship Applicants New York high school seniors who are graduating and interested in pursuing a career in agriculture can apply for New York Farm Bureau’s Agricultural Youth Scholarship. Eligible students can use the financial award for college or advanced training in the skilled trades. Statewide winners can earn up to $3,000 towards their future education. The applicant or their family must be a New York Farm Bureau member, and the student must live and/or work a farm or be involved with agriculture
in the state. The student must also complete the application which includes writing an essay addressing what they value and stand for in agriculture and life and how these values have impacted their decision to pursue an agricultural career. Scoring will determine both county and district winners and may include a personal interview. Each district winner will receive $250 and then compete for one of two state scholarships worth $3,000 and $2,000, based on their submitted applications.
Applications must be submitted by March 1, 2022, and the judging will take place prior to April 20, 2022. Reading and kindness are emphasized daily at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, so the two were combined for the 2022 Pick A Reading Partner program that kicked off on Jan. 21. This year’s theme is “Spread Reading With Acts of Kindness!” The three-week program began with a virtual assembly by performer Jared
Campbell, whose uplifting songs emphasized the importance of doing well in school and showing good character. During PARP, which is presented in partnership with the PTA, children are encouraged to read for at least 20 minutes per day with a family member or friend. There are also daily and weekly challenges, and special gifts and surprises. Through Feb. 11,
students can participate in a variety of reading and kindness challenges. There are more than 20 suggested activities including reading books about kindness, reading a recipe then helping to make dinner, reading song lyrics and then singing to someone, reading with a pet and taking out books from the Massapequa Public Library at Bar Harbour.

Origins Of The Heart-Shaped Chocolate Box
Hearts abound on February 14, and few symbols (and gifts) are more widely associated with a holiday than heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are with Valentine’s Day. Chocolates became trendy in the mid-19th century when the first chocolate bar was made by British company J.S. Fry & Sons by combining cacao powder with sugar and cacao butter to make a rich, melt-inyour-mouth treat that was markedly different than the gritty and greasy drinking chocolate that was losing popularity in Europe. Within a few years, competitor Cadbury introduced the first box of chocolates. It was called the “Fancy Box” and it didn’t take long to become wildly popular. The marriage of chocolate and heartshaped boxes seemed a
natural progression, but the National Valentine Collectors Association says that heart-shaped boxes actually predate chocolate boxes. Various heart-shaped vessels, including “betrothal pendants” and silver boxes in the shape of hearts, were popularized a century earlier. There even were heartshaped porcelain boxes as well as ones for sewing. Having already introduced a chocolate box, Richard Cadbury marketed the first Valentine’s Day box in 1861. It was filled with delicious chocolates, and later could be saved as a keepsake to store special notes or other mementos, according to the North American Packaging Association. Furthermore, the gift fit with Victorian sensibilities in that it was demurely suggestive, NPR reports. Its introduction coincided perfectly with
Valentine’s Day, which also soared in popularity around the same time. Giving chocolate on Valentine’s Day also proved popular in North America. The American chocolate company Hershey’s introduced its Hershey’s Kisses in 1907, and in 1912 the Whitman’s Sampler arrived. In the 1920s, Russell Stover unveiled their own heart-shaped boxes, which today still include the “Red Foil Heart” and the “Secret Lace Heart.” Russell Stover has since become the No. 1 boxed chocolate brand in the United States. Today, more than 36 million heart-shaped boxes holding 58 million pounds of chocolate are sold each year, reports the education resource SoftSchools. They have become a quintessential symbol of Valentine’s Day celebrations.
Residents Invited To Submit Photos For Town Publications Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson invites residents to submit photos taken in the Town of Oyster Bay to be considered for future use in Town publications. “Our residents recently received their 2022 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman
Johnson. “We accept photos for the calendar, as well as other Town publications, including our website, social media pages and brochures.” Councilwoman Johnson noted that photos should be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but highquality photos may also be submitted. Emailed photos should be sent to photos@ oysterbay-ny.gov. Printed photos can be submitted
to the Town’s Public Information Office, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Residents should make sure their name, address, phone number and brief description of the photo are included with their submission. The photographer is responsible for the correct spelling of the names and subjects in the photos, as well as notifying subjects they may appear in a Town publication.

What would Valentine’s Day be without images of a golden-tressed boy armed with bow and arrows? The arrows represent feelings of love and desire, and they are aimed and cast at various individuals, causing them to fall deeply in love — or fall out of it. In Roman mythology, the boy is known as Cupid and is the son of Venus, the goddess of love. Portrayed as a cherubic and mischievous toddler, this magical boy was purported to be the matchmaker of gods and mortals alike. For students of Greek mythology, Cupid represents Eros, the Greek word for “desire.” He was the son of Aphrodite, Venus’ Hellenistic counterpart, and would play with the hearts of mortals and gods, sometimes leaving mayhem in his wake. In Greek mythology, Eros was more teenager than bubbly baby, and capitalized on his status as a heartthrob rather than the cherubic status of Roman mythology, according to Richard Martin, a Stanford University professor. While Cupid may have been an adorable imp, some historians say Eros had a darker side, going so far as to describe him as calculating and sinister — forcing the wrong people into lovelorn matches. According to Museum Hack, while Cupid could make people fall in and out of love, he also was once in love himself. In this telling, Cupid is a young man when Venus learns that a mortal girl is born with such great beauty that others start to forget to worship Venus, adoring this girl instead. Upset about the misdirected adoration toward this mortal, Venus asks Cupid to have the girl, Psyche, fall in love with a monster. Cupid agrees, but once he sees Psyche he “accidentally” hits himself with one of his own golden arrows and falls in love with Psyche. The resulting match does not prove easy, and through a series of unfortunate events, Psyche must prove her love to Cupid and accomplish various tasks to win back his heart. Eventually, Psyche does and achieves goddess status. Cupid has been portrayed both as a young man and child through Renaissance art and beyond. When Valentine’s Day became popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, Cupid was linked to Valentine’s Day celebrations due to his matchmaking abilities. His popularity only continued in the early 20th century, when Hallmark began to manufacture Valentine’s Day cards featuring Cupid. Cupid helped push people together in ancient mythology, and he can even be the catalyst for modern day matchmaking as well.
