Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach
program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

‘Farm To Fairway’ Natural Fertilizer To Reduce Chemical Dependency At Golf Course
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh recently announced a new initiative, ‘Farming to Fairway,’ in which thousands of feet of Sugar Kelp grown in local waterways will be harvested, dried, composted and used to treat landscaping at the Hon. Joseph Colby Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course in Woodbury and throughout Town parks. The Town has expanded its kelp operations in partnership with Adelphi, SUNY Stony Brook, and Cornell Cooperative Extension, now growing over 3,000 feet of kelp – the equivalent of 10 football fields - in Harry Tappan Marina, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park Marina, TOBAY Beach Marina, Oyster Bay Harbor and Cold Spring Harbor Conservation Management Areas Supervisor Saladino stated, “In continuing
our commitment to the environment, this new Farm to Fairway initiative provides dual benefits as Kelp significantly reduces nitrogen in our waterways helping to improve water quality, and decreases our dependency on chemical fertilizers on land. As strange as it may seem, kelp is proven to be incredibly successful as a natural fertilizer as it is 100% organic, dense in nutrients, and does not net an increase in nitrogen through storm water runoff pollution. When applied to fairways specifically, it helps to increase root growth, improve appearance, promote seed development and enhances natural resistance of the fairways to stresses such as disease, drought, and insect pressures.” Sugar Kelp is a large brown seaweed that naturally seizes carbon from its environment as it grows. Kelp is grown in the winter months and
is harvested in the spring before waterways are in use by boaters and water sports enthusiasts. Kelp helps to improve the balance of the ecosystem in the waters. The growing of kelp has become an emerging trend in environmentallysound initiatives, as it produces many positive benefits for the ecosystem of our beautiful waterways. The Town anticipates harvesting nearly 3,000 feet of kelp in 2022. Kelp benefits water quality through the extraction of nitrogen and carbon, which in high levels contributes to the growth of harmful algal blooms which can have detrimental effects on marine life and water quality. YESCCC’s PACT Initiative works with five school districts and communities in Farmingdale, Island Trees, Levittown, the Massapequas, and Plainedge along with the three community
coalitions: Farmingdale Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team, Levittown Community Action Coalition, and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition. Additional partners include each community’s Chambers of Commerce in Farmingdale, Levittown, and Massapequa; Long Island Prevention Resource Center, Nassau County Police Department, and the New York Counterdrug Task Force. Fifth graders recounted some of their fondest memories and turned them into books at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Not only did the project make them better writers, it also helped them
improve their technology skills. After reading several memoirs as mentor texts, students then brainstormed ideas for their own writing topics. In keeping with the season, many of the
young writers wrote about holiday traditions and their favorite winter activities. They used Book Creator on their Chromebooks to take their stories to the next level, allowing them to add pictures and have fun with text.
Fairfield Students Give Gratitude To Local Law Enforcement The Students Against Destructive Decisions club at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District is all about safety. The mission of the club is to emphasize safe decisions and students decided they also wanted to show gratitude to those in the community who help keep them safe. In recognition of national Law Enforcement
Appreciation Day on Jan. 9, the SADD club made a basket of goodies for local police officers. Students wrote cards with personalized messages. Several children, who have active or retired members of law enforcement in their families, shared personal stories in their letters. The gift basket also included coffee and coffee cups as well as a bag of Life
Savers candy because, as SADD adviser Olivia Marlin noted, police officers help save lives. On Jan. 12, officers Luthy, Valentino and Zimmerman from the Nassau County Police Department’s 7th Precinct POP Unit stopped by Fairfield, where students presented them with the gift.

Hometown Heroes Recognition Applications Now Available Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola have announced that the Town will begin accepting applications for the 2022 Hometown Heroes’ Community Recognition Program. This initiative recognizes the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces – both living and deceased – who are current or former Town of Oyster Bay residents. “My Town Board colleagues and I were amazed by the outpouring of support this program received in its first year by our incredible residents, businesses and local heroes,” said Councilman Labriola. “We are proud to return this important initiative to our communities and we look forward to further recognizing our
veterans, active duty service members, and their families for their commitment to defend our freedoms and democracy.” Banners bearing the nominated individual’s name, rank, photograph and area of service will be unveiled throughout selected park facilities across the Town of Oyster Bay in the months leading up to Veterans Day in November 2022. Any interested individual or organization who would wish to sponsor a banner can remit $75 to sponsor the production of a banner. No profit is made from this program. Once the banners are displayed, the Town will maintain the banners, and will remain on display until Veterans Day, where they will then be taken down to avoid any inclement winter weather and returned to the service family or their loved ones.
Those who sponsored a banner last year are reminded to submit a new application in order to be included in the 2022 season. Applications must be received by March 11, 2022. Supervisor Saladino added, “This is an especially meaningful way to honor those who bravely and selflessly served our nation. Life’s WORC was founded 50 years ago after the closing of Willowbrook State School back in the early 1970s. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps Yunis. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau
and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism. A pair of Massapequa High School seniors were recently recognized for their leadership in physical education. Anthony Matturro and Alyssa Papasodero were the 2022 recipients of the Nassau Zone Outstanding Student Award, presented by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Two students, one male and one female, are selected each year from every high school who best exemplify their understanding of the New York State learning standards for health and physical education. Anthony and Alyssa were chosen for the award by teachers in Massapequa
High School’s physical education department for exhibiting physically active lifestyles, valuing healthy choices, demonstrating responsible personal and social behavior including good character, citizenship and sportsmanship, showing leadership, and being positive influences on their peers. Anthony and Alyssa are active participants health and physical education classes. “I just do the best I can, try as hard as I can and lead by example,” Anthony said, adding that he credits his determination and success to his wonderful physical education teachers
from elementary school to high school. Alyssa said that she enjoys all of the activities in physical education classes and likes the variety of sports she gets to play with her classmates. She is grateful that her teachers selected her for the award out of hundreds of students. “I think it’s a great accomplishment,” Alyssa said, “and I’m very thankful that the physical education teachers saw something in me.” The pair also play sports for Massapequa, with Alyssa a member of school and community ice hockey teams and Anthony a football and baseball player.
