When was the last time you took in a nice play, or a concert in an intimate venue? Perhaps an art gallery showing, featuring some local up and coming artists, or a museum exhibit? I don’t know about you, but culture really feeds my soul. A weekend spent entrenched in the arts or science or history can feel akin to a mini-vacation, and makes me feel connected to my humanity and the world around me. Come to think of it, a nourishing hobby can do the same; whether it is volunteering at your local animal shelter, jewelry making, horseback riding (my personal favorite) or rockclimbing. It could be just about anything. I can’t speak for everyone, but for those of us who are often entrenched in the routine of grocery shopping, play dates, errands and preparing for the

Around Town calendar each week for the newspaper, I see so many interesting and culturally enriching events taking place throughout Long Island. I will admit, I have been guilty of thinking, “Note to self. You have to go check this out,” and then I’ll get sidetracked and forget to go. I’ll let myself get so swept up in life that the days will get away from me. It happens to the best of us. But the twenty-four hours that we are granted each day are filled with endless promise, and we owe it to ourselves to make the most of them whenever possible. When it comes to squeezing every ounce of opportunity out of each weekday in terms of career, I’m batting a thousand. But I’ve been slacking a bit on squeezing every ounce of life and enjoyment out of the 48 hours between Friday night and Sunday night. Let’s make this a collective challenge! Each weekend, let’s

at everything the area has to offer, from movie screenings and crafting, to classes, lectures and music events. Next time something catches your eye, stop in your tracks, make plans and get tickets, or simply make a reservation. Incidentally, you would be surprised at the amount of free activities around town. Feeling like a homebody this winter? Invite a bunch of friends over for a Saturday night potluck dinner and classic movie screening. Share laughs, memories and great food. Then take in some classic films in your living room. Maybe even break out a board game or two. Do something that will have you skipping back to work or school, or the Monday routine, with newfound vigor. I’m holding myself to this one too. lot to learn, and I’m excited to see what they will be competing with at States.” Farmingdale’s robotics teams have consistently qualified for the Southern New York State VEX Championship and have advanced to the VEX World Championship (held every April) for the past four years. While the number of individuals choosing to self direct their services is quickly growing, the PBS Community Foundation aims to provide support through grass roots, community based networks. The PBS Community Foundation initiatives started with Big Time Glee, a singing group that now meets twice a month in Smithtown. This group performs at various events such as Long Island Ducks games! In response to numerous requests from the Self-Directed community, the Foundation created a similar group in Nassau, which meets monthly in Bellmore. This is called the Nassau Voice. Aditionally, another initative, The Crafting Connection, meets every other week to work on different crafty projects or just to socialize and play games. More recently, Self-Directed individuals are focusing on the health of their mind and body. The PBS Community Foundation offers Yoga Without Boundaries twice a month at the Yoga Darshana Center in West Babylon. This center generously donates the space and Dan Elfawal, a certified special educator and yoga instructor, leads a free yoga class open to individuals with all abilities. Dan says the students walk away focused, calm and self confident. Through the practice of yoga, students build strength and develop coping skills, which can lead to a healthier lifestyle. The PBS Community Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, was established to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs. They particularly focus on selfdetermination and full inclusion in the local community. Their mission is to help these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community, as well as encourage long-term planning and to support efforts towards establishing social connections and friendships in the community. For individuals with disabilities, the movement away from inadequate and segregated institutional congregate custodial care has been taking place for 40 years. Now more than ever, individuals with disabilities are seeking the opportunity to stay in their own communities and pursue their personal goals, while receiving the needed levels of support to make full community inclusion a sustainable reality. In New York State, anyone who is eligible for OPWDD Services (NYS Office For People With Developmental Disabilities) and enrolled in the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Waiver, can choose to selfdirect their services. As of September 30, 2018, there were 2,926 individuals enrolled in ‘Self Direction’ on Long Island. (Source: NYS OPWDD) Self-Direction is a person-centered approach that empowers individuals with developmental disabilities to create a life plan with supports that they chose, based on their unique strengths, needs and goals. It also gives the individual more control over

Style Directors for Martha Stewart Weddings agree, saying that roughly 75 percent of wedding dresses are strapless, although some alternative necklines are starting to become more popular. With so much attention directed their way, brides might look for ways to tone their upper bodies for the big day.

Brides who want to tone up can speak with a ﬁtness instructor at a nearby gym to learn various ways to ﬁrm their arms, chests and backs in advance of their wedding days.

Braised Lentil and Chard with Sausage By Kristen Link of Massapequa, New York

What You Will Need:

1 1/4 lb. sweet Italian Sausage 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 up diced yellow onions 1 large garlic clove minced 1/2 cup diced carrots 1/2 cup diced celery 1 cup diced fennel bulb (stems removed) 2 cups packed, roughly chopped Swiss Chard - stems removed and diced 1 cup green or brown lentils washed 1 bay leaf 1/2 dry red wine 2 1/2 cups beef stock 1/2 teaspoon red chili flakes salt and pepper to taste

Add in lentils and stir. Pour in wine to de-glaze the pan, scrapping any bits up off the bottom if necessary. Pour in the remaining stock (or water) making sure the lentils are almost entirely submerged. Add the bay leaf. Let the pot come to a low boil before setting the burner to low heat and simmering with the lid off. After 15 minutes, add in chard leaves and stir. If at this point the lentils still seem al dente or are no longer covered in liquid, add a little more stock or water until they are submerged. Season as needed with your red chili flakes, salt and pepper. Place sausage links into the lentil mixture so that they are halfway covered. Let cook for another 10 minutes or until the lentils absorbed. Serve with crusty bread if desired! Enjoy!

Preparation: In a large Dutch oven or saucepan with a lid, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add sausages in a single layer. Cook on each side until they are brown. Remove sausages from pan and set aside. Add the remaining oil to the pan and add in onion. Cook onions for 5 minutes until they are tender. Add garlic and cook 1 minute before adding in carrots, celery, fennel and chard stems. Stir well and cook for 5 more minutes.

to keep me warm. I was uncontrollably shaking and shivering from the inside out. I felt aches and pains and my eyes bulged with fright and confusion. “What is happening to me?” I thought. As a chronic baseline anxiety sufferer my entire life, I was in the throes of the worst and most extended episode of acute anxiety I’d ever known. I was experiencing five or six full blown panic attacks per day, generalized anxiety, agoraphobia and unbearable physical sensations. I feared I was dying, or worse, losing my mind and “going crazy,” a common fear among those with anxiety and panic disorder. It all started when I was seven or eight years old (the age my son is now) and I began to experience intense feelings of worry connected to my physical health. As I reached my preteen years my anxiety

grew more ambitious and branched out to what we now commonly refer to as OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). But at twelve years old it just kind of felt like this: “Lock the door and check it three times or something bad might happen.” “Touch the wall as you walk by if you want to stay safe.” You might recognize the above as obsessivecompulsive thoughts and behaviors or “magical thinking,” and you may have even experienced something resembling it. By the time I was a teenager I had graduated to the trifecta: anxiety/ panic, OCD and depression. It was also around this time that I discovered that my well of creativity, intuition and compassion ran deep. The spoken and written word became my solace, and the gift I felt I had to offer the world.

My highly sensitized being may have created anxiety, but it also blossomed into an ability to connect with others in a rarefied way, and to express myself as a successful journalist and writer. This excerpt from my book was also published by the ADAA - Anxiety and Depression Association of America, with the purpose of lending my voice and support to this community. After years of asking, “Why me?” I never again have to ask that question. Through sharing my story in the media, and through

speaking engagements, I have turned it around from a challenge to a gift. My Journey With Anxiety

STEAM activities have had a holiday theme throughout December at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. These hands-on projects focusing on science, technology, engineering, the arts and math have delighted students with seasonal connections. Under the direction of Magnet and STEAM teacher Joanne Markowski, first-graders

were charged with making snowmen out of Crayola Model Magic, a material similar to clay. Each team had to make a small, medium and large sphere before they could add the details like arms, buttons, eyes, a nose and scarf.
