Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson announces that a Toddler Arts & Crafts Program will be offered during the months of February and March. This 6-week program offers classes at the Town’s Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room and Hicksville Athletic Center, and is open to children ages 2 through 4. Students Hear A Cautionary Tale Seventh graders in the Massapequa School District gained an understanding of the harmful effects of smoking from a guest presenter who strives to educate youngsters by sharing his personal story. Frank Mullahey, of Massapequa, has been visiting Berner Middle School for more than 15 years to speak to students during their health classes. Mr. Mullahey explained that he started smoking when he was 12 and continued the habit for four decades. More than 20

years ago, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and was given months to live. A surprise recovery led to Mr. Mullahey’s desire to “do something positive” and teach children about the dangers of smoking. He noted the short-term and long-term effects of smoking, including having his voice box removed. Mr. Mullahey speaks with a Servox, an amplifier that he holds up to his throat to pick up the vibrations of his vocal cords. Additionally, he can’t go swimming and can’t eat certain food.

Each class is approximately 30 minutes to an hour long. The cost of the program is $25 per child who is a Town resident, and $30 per child whose care giver is a Town resident but not the child. Space is limited and upon registration, the child’s birth certificate and a tax or utility bill will be required to validate age and proof of residency. A guardian must be present during the class. A smock and supplies will be provided with enrollment. The Toddler’s Arts & Crafts Program is run by the Town’s Parks Department, Recreation Division. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced today that the 10th Annual Town of Oyster Bay Long Island Blues Winter Classic will take place on Saturday, January 25th. This special event showcases LI Blues hockey players with special needs enjoying a game they love verse three other teams from the tristate area. The public is welcome to attend and admission is FREE. The tournament will consist of six games that will take place throughout the day between the four teams. “The LI Blues is an inspiring hockey program in which children and young adults with developmental disabilities play ice hockey in a wonderful setting,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This LI Blues organization brings all the fun of playing ice hockey to

How Is Catholic Schools Week Celebrated on Long Island? On Long Island, Catholic Elementary Schools celebrate the week with Masses and open houses to thank parents and parishioners, and to introduce new

families to the benefits of a Catholic education. These frequently kick off with a Mass and open house on the Sunday the 26th, but can be held early as St Patrick School in Huntington is doing on Thursday the 23rd. In addition to the Open House to welcome new visitors, Catholic Schools Week features a series of events designed to recognize the contributions of students, parents and faculty during the course of the week. Many schools also offer additional open houses and opportunities for prospective new families to visit during the week as well. Catholic schools are unique in many significant ways, and Catholic Schools Week highlights many of those differences. First, Catholic education acknowledges the parents as the original teachers in each of our lives and celebrates the continued and ongoing involvement of parents in their child’s education, and with their child’s school. Catholic Schools Week is the best opportunity for families who might be considering the benefits of a Catholic education

to experience first-hand the commitment to academic excellence and faith formation in your local school. Prospective families tour the facilities, are introduced to the innovative reading and math programs that accelerate academic achievement, and they get to see how the safe, loving, supportive and orderly environment in a Catholic school makes it the perfect environment to support learning. As many of the touring parents have said, the best part of the visit during Catholic Schools Week is being able to see and feel the difference that a value-centered education can make for every child. This is frequently reinforced by the contact prospective families have with the 7th and 8th grade students, most often as tour guides. It begins the last Sunday in January, which in 2020 is January 26th, and runs through Saturday, February 1st. The theme for Catholic Schools Week is ‘Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.’ During Catholic Schools Week, schools across the Diocese, and across the country, mark the occasion with Masses and special entertainment and activities for the students, families, parishioners and members of their extended communities. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and the school’s contributions to our church, our communities, and our nation

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading non-profit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Louis Imbroto today announced that registration for the Town’s 2020 Spring Youth Ice Hockey Program and House League is underway now through January 26th at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, with onsite registration available on Sunday, January 26th (8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.). The Ice Skating Center is located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. “Youngsters enrolled in the Town’s Youth Ice Hockey program are given the great opportunity to improve their skating and hockey skills as part of a program that has earned recognition by the National Hockey League for its high level of quality,” said Councilman Imbroto. “The Town of Oyster Bay’s Youth Ice Hockey Program is among the best around, with a dedicated coaching

staff ready to teach this sport to the many boys and girls enrolled in our program.” The program is open to girls and boys ages 3-16. Individuals interested in registering for the 2020 Spring Youth Ice Hockey Program must bring a copy of their birth certificate, proof of Town of Oyster Bay residency (tax or utility bill) as well as payment. Check, money order, MasterCard or Visa will be accepted. All registrants must bring these items, even if they have participated in the past. A parent or legal guardian must be present at registration. The program is held on Sunday mornings, and Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Registration fees are as follows: *6U: $225 for one child being registered, $175 for each additional

child from same family ($325 for non-residents) *8U, 10U, 12U, & 16U: $350 for one child being registered, $300 for each additional child from same family ($450 for non-residents) All participants must provide their own equipment, and should have some skating ability. Games will be played at all three Town rinks, with game schedules being distributed in February.
