During this pandemic, Angels of Long Island is short staffed and looking for help. Their store is cleaned every morning and masks are required there. Please only consider volunteering if you are not showing any covid symptoms. Everyone’s safety is their first priority. Lastly, every Saturday until further notice, Angels of Long Island will team up with Carroll’s Kitchen, another Long Island based non-profit. Together they will be handing out gourmet to-go meals for free to anyone who stops by the Angels’ Patchogue store when the meals are available (please visit the Angels of Long Island Facebook page for meal arrival updates). Anyone is welcome to come and let a team member know how many dinners you need. The meals are distributed via curbside pickup. “So many people are out of work,” says Debbie. “If we can help their budget a ltitle by providing a meal for their family, it thrills me!” I personally would like to thank both nonprofit organizations for making a difference on our island, touching the hearts of those in need and having a smile on your faces while doing so! “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.” Proverbs 19:17

Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization ran by Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo. They turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Their non-profit continued to grow so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience.” The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street. The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every Monday-Saturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you. All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them. Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables. Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and

Artists Share Their Talents For Coloring Book

Dozens of talented student-artists at Massapequa High School joined forces with art teachers from the Massapequa School District to spread some cheer in the community. They are creating a digital coloring book, set to be released prior to the holiday break. The idea was conceived

by officers from the high school’s National Art Honor Society. Art students from both the main and Ames campuses, as well as elementary and secondary level art teachers, contributed drawings for the book. It is expected to be about 100 pages when complete. With the goal of making it a family

activity, the sketches range from simple to complex, so artists of all ages can find something to color. Paul Leone, co-adviser of the honor society along with Patti Krakoff, said that the contributing students and teachers had the option of submitting hand-drawn or digitally created pieces. Because

it will be published online, people will have the option of selecting the pages they want to complete and can print them out at home. “We wanted to make sure that it was accessible to everyone and digital was the way to go,” Mr. Leone said, noting that the art honor society is a service-

based organization. “This was a way to do it safely and contribute to the community in a meaningful way.” Honor society copresidents Gabriella Auz and Kayla Hassett said that the organization has created coloring books in the past, and this was a good year to revive the idea to raise the spirits of

the Massapequa school community during the pandemic. They said that all of the drawings are of holiday and winter scenes. When the coloring book is released, they will also announce a hashtag so people can share their colored-in pieces on social media.

The advent of the New Year brings with it the promise and relief that we will be able to be vaccinated against this annoying virus, and get on with our lives in whatever normal way that we can. As the expression goes, “Help is on the way!!” Remember that membership dues are now due for 2021, and I ask all to remit as soon as possible to the office if you have not as of yet. Our Christmas Decorations Committee did a great job, and we are now finished with that for another season. We look forward to the upcoming 2021 agenda that we will set with the Board. One of these items is our upcoming scholarship program, chaired by Carol Leff and Karen Gawrych. They do a great job with this. If you know a graduating senior student at Massapequa High School or Plainedge High School, please have them check with their guidance office for details. We are also offering our Member’s Child / Grandchild Scholarship, which is open to any graduating senior who is the child or grandchild of a current Chamber member in good standing. Details for this award will soon be found on our newly designed website - thanks to Loren Wildes and Bar Harbor Web Design for the great work on the website…Loren is a true professional and her work exhibits that at all times. You may also contact our office and Shelley will assist with any scholarship information that you may need.

Our Treasurer, Greg Massimi, had to step down from the Board. My thanks to him for his six months of dedicated service and assistance. Past President Gary Slavin will take over as Acting Treasurer for now. We have announced that the Board seat has opened to all to apply for, so that we can appoint a new Board Member at the February Board Meeting. Résumés are due to Shelley by January 31, 2021 for all applicants. We look forward to our new member joining us in the near future. We have some sad news this month, as Past President Patty Orzano lost her Mother, Anne Palmieri. We give all of our sympathy to Patty and her family, and pray that her mother rests with the Lord. I never met Mrs. Palmieri, but I know how devoted Patty was to her Mom the sign of a great Daughter. May she Rest in Peace.

Karen also works for the Chamber on our Toy Drive and Food Donation Committees. I value her friendship and input at our meetings, as she is always on the money. Robert is the father of two children, and is a great community benefactor, as he donates to many LI charities with his money and time for fundraisers. I am proud to work with him, and look forward to his wise counsel on all of our Chamber matters. He was recently awarded a Man of Distinction award for LI, and kudos to him on that well-deserved honor.

COVID-19 has impacted tens of thousands of Long Islanders, and many who have recovered from the virus are now combatting a variety of lingering health issues as a result. Known as “long-haulers” these individuals are living with the chronic effects of the virus that can include organ damage, poor lung function, fatigue, muscle aches, cognitive slowing and headaches. Also, longhaulers still exhibit various symptoms of COVID even

after testing negative for the virus. “The long-lasting health effects of COVID-19 could affect anyone at any age, but appears to be more likely with those over the age of 50,” said Director of Infectious Disease at Catholic Health Service’s (CHS) St. Francis Hospital Alan M. Bulbin, M.D. “Those with other comorbidities, chronic illnesses or those who have had a more serious acute infection are also more likely to be impacted. But we have also seen

younger patients show longterm health impacts after recovering from the virus.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it is actively working to learn more about the range of short- and longterm health effects associated with COVID-19. CDC officials said continued research is revealing that many organs, including the lungs and heart, are impacted by the virus. Dr. Bulbin recommends that medical treatment

for long-haulers should be managed by an individual’s primary care physician. He said the challenge currently facing doctors in treating those with longlasting health results from COVID-19 is identifying the proper treatment regimen. To help those dealing with long-term health effects of COVID-19, CHS’s St. Charles Hospital now offers a Post-COVID Outpatient Rehabilitation Program. Patients who are at least 14 days past a COVID-19

diagnosis are provided medically-supervised physical therapy for endurance training, strength training and education. Recognizing a need to develop a program specifically for patients who are dealing with the aftereffects of COVID-19, the medical team at St. Charles used their experience in working with patients who have respiratory illnesses such as emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Buyers are not staying home watching football on these cold January 2021 days. In fact, Buyers never stopped looking during the holidays and are continuing to attend Open Houses to purchase a home. I had an Open House Jan 3 and 21 families waited patiently while social distancing to see the home. An offer was emailed to me before the end of the Open House. Two additional offers came in that day. I verified all information provided with each prospective Buyer’s lender. I presented all offers to the Sellers. They chose the Buyers that they believe are most financially qualified and could move within the Sellers timeframe.The moral of the story is have your credit in good shape, get preapproved and find the right realtor to work with you. Don’t waste your time, so before looking at homes, view the pictures and video, if available, and look on a map to see where the home is located. If you can, drive by to see if the home is on a high traffic street or a passive steet where only those living on the street are driving by. Know your most important criteria. With your agent, do your home work including verification of the taxes, prior to seeing the home.
