To help hospitals meet the pressing need for blood, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Laura Maier, and cancer survivor Aliyah Petrone of Massapequa partnered to host a Blood Donation Drive. 30 pints of blood were donated at this collection drive, potentially saving 90 lives since a single pint of blood can save up to three lives. “The Town of Oyster Bay is home to many extraordinary residents and community role models, including Aliyah Petrone of Massapequa. Aliyah was diagnosed with
Acute Myeloid Leukemia at 18 years old and was treated successfully at Cohens Children’s Medical Center. Now, as a cancer survivor, she advocates for children with cancer and has coordinated numerous successful blood drives in our town, thus directly saving lives,” Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino said. “I’m incredibly proud of our partnership with Aliyah, especially as blood donations are needed now more than ever to help local hospitals meet growing demand and continue lifesaving operations.” “Blood donations are
extremely important to help secure necessary blood transfusions for patients. During this pandemic, blood supplies have dwindled and are critically low, so this blood drive, one of the largest in our local area, was critical for our local hospitals. Town of Oyster Bay Hosts 2022 Induction Ceremony
The Town of Oyster Bay hosted its 2022 Induction Ceremony with the swearing-in of Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Lou Imbroto, Councilman Tom Hand and Town Clerk Rich LaMarca. “This great team has stood before you promising a new term that would be like no other – and boy, did we get that wish. We committed to using every talent and skill to guide this Town safely and professionally and overcome every challenge, and that’s exactly what we did when faced with the largest challenge in a century. While we continue to battle this pandemic, we have set a course which has become a template for others, and dealing with the pandemic was just the beginning,” Supervisor Saladino stated. Supervisor Saladino and the Town Board have
returned fiscal stability and trust to the Town of Oyster Bay, turning a $44 million deficit into a $47 million surplus, all while cutting taxes. “We take great pride in these accomplishments, but it is the evolution to the finest services our Town has ever seen that makes us most proud,” continued Supervisor Saladino. “We delivered the promise to protect your way of life, improved our parks, our infrastructure and your experience in this most beautiful Town. To magnify this accomplishment, we did it while cutting and freezing taxes four years in a row. And you don’t have to take my word for it – two independent Wall Street firms have recognized our efforts with six bond rating upgrades while our residents see new roads, and our businesses see a new path to success which includes same-day permits, and a new user-friendly
Town. “The new day in the Town of Oyster Bay is far from sunset. We’ve attracted many new companies and job opportunities to our Town. We’ve made great strides in downtown revitalization, investment in our infrastructure including roadways and improving services. Our vision for the future includes great improvements and a continuation of investment in road repaving, more downtown revitalization, the ongoing protection and restoration of TOBAY Beach, the remediation of the Grumman Navy Plume and overall preservation of our roadways, expansion of our local parks and environmental facilities. We are so excited about our future and continuing the great service to our residents,” concluded Supervisor Saladino.
Students Entertain Seniors With Holiday Tunes
A holiday tradition returned to Massapequa High School this year as local senior citizens were invited to a free musical performance on Dec. 13. The afternoon concert was a preview of the high school’s nighttime winter showcase, “An Evening of Holiday Music,” on Dec. 15-16. Welcoming the crowd to the newly renovated auditorium were interim Superintendent of Schools Brian Conboy, Director of Fine and Performing Arts Vincent Green and Principal Barbara Lowell. The concert opened with the Treble Choir singing a traditional German carol, “Kling Glöckchen, Kling.” The singers, under the direction of Ilena Dempsey, also performed a Hanukkah song, “Hanerot Halalu,” and “Do You Hear What I Hear?” Up next was the orchestra, conducted by Marjorie Spagnuolo. The string musicians delighted the crowd with “Sleigh Ride” and “A Mad Russian’s Christmas.” Mozart’s “Gloria In Excelsis” was the first number for the a cappella choir, led by Nichole Greene. They also song “Bidi Bom,” “Away” and “Be a Light.” The three groups, which

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand reminds residents that Town sanitation and S.O.R.T. Recycling collection schedules will be modified for the Monday, January 17th observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. “There will be no sanitation or recycling
collection on Monday, January 17th for residents who normally receive Town service,” Councilman Hand said. “Residents who generally receive Town pickup on Mondays will have their collections done the next day, Tuesday, January 18th. Those who usually receive pickup on Tuesdays will be collected
on Wednesday, January 19th.” The Councilman added that Town offices will be closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but parks and skating rinks will be open and offer extended hours. Making Music And Granting Wishes “We are one little school, but our impact has been big,” said Dr. Michael Yannucci, principal of Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, at the 33rd Make-A-Wish concert on Dec. 23. The holiday music performance also featured the announcement of this year’s donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation – $9,800. Since the school began raising money for the wish-granting organization more than decades ago, this year’s donation is the fourth highest, Dr. Yannucci noted. Collectively, the school had raised more than $180,000 for Make-A-Wish. “This Lockhart tradition has continued through the support of tens of thousands of students and their families, hundreds of educators and their families, and the larger Lockhart community,” he
said. “It’s an effort inspired by the wishes we grant and the lives we hope to make just a little bit better.” Lockhart will grant three wishes this year. Nicky, a 6-year-old boy who is now cancer free after being diagnosed at 3, will get his dream vacation to the beach. Danna, a 6-year-old girl with a heart condition, will get a maltipoo puppy and 7-year-old Cris, who is battling cancer, wishes for a large television, PlayStation 5 and many games as a way to stay connected with his friends. “I hope you all feel a sense of pride knowing that we’ve worked together to help make a difference in children’s lives,” Assistant Principal Louisa Vecchione told the students and staff, thanking them for their generous donations to the cause. The student council, led by adviser Emily Bresnihan,
also took part in the event, with remarks about joy and kindness. “Lockhart takes part in Make-A-Wish every year because we are a kind and caring school,” student council President Matthew Park said. “We not only care about people in need, but do something to help. We show how kind we are by raising money to grant wishes for very ill kids as a way to make them feel better.” The centerpiece of the concert was, of course, the fifth grade musicians. The orchestra, conducted by Michael Molloy, the chorus, led by Kathleen Dyckman, and band, under the direction of Amanda Collins, performed a wide array of Christmas, Hanukkah and winterthemed songs. At the end, all musicians and the audience joined together for a holiday sing-along.

Local not-for-profit organization, Heroes Among Us joins with the United Veterans Organization of Nassau County and local Veterans of Foreign Wars groups, and the Nassau County Executive’s office to build a monument in Eisenhower Park to honor all post 9/11 servicemen and women. The monument will join other memorials in Veterans Memorial Park which honor veterans who served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans Monument will be the only monument of its kind on Long Island and one of the first in New York State honoring the courage, dedication, and bravery of United States servicemen and women who fought in military conflicts after 9/11. Over this twenty-year period, 7,000 servicemen and women died in battle and 30,000 post 9/11 veterans have died by suicide. The monument will provide a permanent reminder of their service and provide a much-needed sanctuary and

To bring some joy to children battling cancer, students at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District created warrior necklaces with inspirational messages. The project was spearheaded by art teacher Melinda Gibbons. Fifth graders made close to 100 necklaces which will

Fairfield Artists Craft Messages Of Strength donated to Love Smiles, a nonprofit pediatric cancer foundation, and will be added to care boxes for children undergoing treatment. Students designed the necklaces using Photopea, an online photo editor, on their Chromebooks. They each chose a motivational word such as “brave” or
“strong” to include over the background. Ms. Gibbons printed out the designs and students placed them in necklace bezels before adding the string. The project allowed students to explore digital art while also performing an act of kindness of others.
