A Story With A Purpose

The story of a fictional girl, recruited by NASA for an important space mission, came to life in a classroom at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students participated in Submerge Storytelling, an interactive experience in which they learned how to use evidence to draw conclusions. During the course of a week, fifth graders spent one hour per day in the room for different factfinding missions. Students

in kindergarten through second grade also were invited in for one half-hour session. The program was in partnership with the PTA’s Art in Education committee. Cory Levine, CEO of Submerge Storytelling, transformed the classroom into the bedroom of fictitious middle school student Emmy Sagan. Students had to explore the room to draw conclusions about her mission to locate minerals inside the rings of Saturn. They also had

to make predictions about challenges that Emmy and her fellow astronauts could face in their journey. The science-based activity actually helped students develop a variety of literary skills including using evidence to support a claim, identifying character traits, sequencing and story elements, and comparing and contrasting. Other themes included altruism, friendship, integrity and perseverance.

I certainly hope that all had a great Christmas and Hanukkah season. The year 2022 seems to be starting off the way 2021 did - with this Omicron variant getting us all down and feeling that things may never get better. One thing that I ask of all our members is to please exercise extreme caution and care when gathering with people. Stay safe and healthy, as we all want to hear that the ones that we care about are in good stead as we get through this again.

My thanks to Friends for Life Homecare, and especially Amy Recco for chairing and sponsoring our Christmas Tree Lighting and Hanukkah Celebration at Klestinec Park on December 4th. Big thanks also to Melanie Duffy and Broadway Gourmet Bagel Café and Caterers for donating the hot chocolate for this event. The celebration took place without a glitch, and all had a great time, especially the kids with Santa. I look forward to this next year also. Special thanks to all those that decorated the park and then took down the decorations at the completion of the holiday season. Our Christmas and Hanukkah Party at Zona was great. Our Meeting Planning Committee, Robin Hepworth and Karen Gawrych, did a splendid job setting this up. We also celebrated my birthday that night with a delicious cake at the party. It was great to see all in attendance that evening. Our stalwarts Patty Orzano, Phyllis Doria, Robert R. Barrett, and Karen Gawrych outdid themselves with our Food Drive and Toys for Tots program again this year. They are to be commended for their dedication and commitment to these projects through the years. At this time, I must give special congratulations to Past President Denis Monette on his appointment as the Commissioner of the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management. This is well-deserved, and he will do a great job. Kudos also to Past President Gary Slavin as he becomes the President of his Statewide Insurance Group. I am most proud of both of these men for these accomplishments. This is what makes our Chamber…Massapequa Strong! We just held our January Board Meeting, and I announced that Past President Patty Orzano will be chairing the Nominating Committee. We will elect the rest of the committee at the March Board Meeting, so they will have a month to put a list of nominees together. A slate will then be presented at the April General Meeting for all to consider for the next administration of the Chamber. I am also glad to tell all that the Board increased the scholarships this year from $250.00 to $400.00 for each award given. More will come out about that as we begin the process. The committee will be chaired by 2nd Vice President Karen Gawrych. The January Luncheon is scheduled for Mario’s on Broadway on Thursday, January 27th. Watch your e-mails for the details on the luncheon. At the February meeting, we will honor Volunteer Firefighters from Massapequa and North Massapequa - more details will be coming on this as well. Finally, I ask all to keep our loved ones in their prayers during this difficult time. We have had some close to our Chamber that need prayers, like my good pal Sal Polito’s wife Marie, and Denis Monette’s wife, Carol - that’s what we are all about, caring for each other. Please pray that this pandemic ends soon and we can all get back to our own normal, not the new normal. Co-Workers Donate Toys And Send Cards To Neighbors Across Long Island

The holidays were a little brighter across Long Island, thanks to the generosity and thoughtfulness of PSEG Long Island employees. By participating in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program, an employee-led toy drive and a holiday greeting card campaign, dozens of coworkers helped spread cheer and hope this holiday season for neighbors in need. More than 120 co-workers fulfilled holiday wishes for 105 Suffolk County children enrolled in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. From bikes, tablets and video games, to toys, dolls and action figures, several hundred gifts were donated in all. A handful of PSEG Long Island employees also helped distribute the goodies and load clients’ vehicles the week before Christmas at the Salvation Army’s Riverhead headquarters. Here’s what some employees said about participating: “I am happy to carry on this tradition that my family started when I was a kid,” said Ashley Arndt of Dix Hills. “We always sponsored a family in need and it felt so good to support these sweet

boys and girls. I am thankful that PSEG Long Island is committed to supporting our community and helping our neighbors and friends. This company makes it easy to help so many diverse people across Long Island.” “Being raised by a single mom of three children, I remember how important it was for my mom to have access to a program like this that would allow for a few more gifts to be put under the tree on Christmas morning, said Brittney Schmidt of Smithtown. “I am happy that now I’m able to give to other families. I am also grateful to work for a company that values the importance to giving back to our communities.” “Participating in the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program over the years has always been a rewarding experience that brings to light the spirit of Christmas,” said Diane Finocchio of Farmingdale. “I’ve been supporting the Angel Tree program since my start with PSEG Long Island,” said Krysten Acevedo of Center Moriches. “I do it because I hate the idea of a child waking up on Christmas

morning to nothing under their tree and wondering what it was they did to get on Santa’s naughty list.” The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program serves Long Island children from newborn to 16 years old, and relies on the support of individual donors, companies and organizations to make lasting impressions by fulfilling the wish lists of children and families who might otherwise not receive gifts. During the past eight years, PSEG Long Island employees have donated presents to more than 1,200 families who live in the company’s service area. It’s just one of the many ways in which the company gives back to the community. An employee-led toy collection drive was also hosted.
