McKenna and the Bee “Steward” was the winning word for ﬁfthgrader Hailey Freire during the annual spelling bee at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on December 13th. The voluntary spelling bee was open to all fourth- and ﬁfth-graders. Hailey emerged as the top speller among 47 students

who participated in the preliminary round and six ﬁnalists who competed on the auditorium stage. Teacher Edward Courtney read each word and also used it in a sentence. Fifth-graders Joseph Moehringer and Olivia Trojanowski placed second and third, respectively. The three winners each received a trophy and

Barnes & Noble gift card. Hailey said that she spent a lot of time practicing at home with her mother and father and noted that many words on the list were hard. She explained that being a good speller will help her do better in school and attain her goals of going to college and getting a good job.

MASSAPEQUA FIRE COMMISSIONER - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino (second from left) and Town Councilman Tom Hand (third from right) recently joined with members of the Massapequa Fire District to install Gary Perischetti as Massapequa Fire Commissioner. Commissioner Persichetti ﬁrst was elected as Commissioner in 2013, before winning his recent re-election to the position. He has been a member of the Massapequa Fire Department for the past 42 years and served as Chief of the Department from 1992 to 1994. Supervisor Saladino proudly led the installation, and along with Councilman Hand, thanked the ﬁre service members assembled for their invaluable service to the community.

Chewy Macaroons

A Little Bit Goes A Long Way

Preparation:

Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees Beat egg whites with salt until stiff Gradually beat in sugar until stiff (shiny peaks will form) Slowly fold in coconut and vanilla

There is a Tony Robbins phrase that stays with me, which goes as follows: “People tend to overestimate what they can accomplish in a year, and they tend to underestimate what can be accomplished in a decade.” I love that phrase and think of it often. To bring it out to a wider perspective, I interpret it to mean that human nature tends to box us in to thinking that when it comes to meeting a goal or aspiration, we must take an “all or nothing” approach. It simply isn’t true. Another old saying, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” is one of the most brilliant lines ever spoken (it originated from an old Chinese proverb, which was translated into English). I was just speaking with a coworker about the holidays. As we were discussing the copious amounts of food many of us tend to consume during the holiday season and how gym memberships are often initiated in January and not followed through with, I jokingly told her about my “Lazy Girl Workout.”

I explained that during the winter months when it is not as easy to take my long hikes outdoors or to play outdoor sports, I do tend to be more sedentary. I also have a larger appetite in the winter. However, I never pass up a moment to squeeze in some form of physical activity, even when I am doing something like watching a movie or catching up on Netflix. I call it my “Lazy Girl Workout.” Sounds funny, right? Most days, as I am laying on the floor or in bed doing my “Netflix and Chill” thing, I take the opportunity to do my leg lifts in repetition for about half an hour. It gives my legs a nice, low impact workout. I will also do my abdominal isometrics and some arm circles while I’m at it. No, it’s not quite as robust as 45 minutes on a treadmill or an hour of lifting weights, but if you compare doing nothing to doing something, I am ahead of the game. Human beings will often set up losing propositions for themselves by saying, “Well, if I can’t do the very best thing, then

why bother at all?” They fail to see the immense value in a whole lot of consistent small steps. Last year, I was having a moment when I was feeling very overwhelmed. There were a lot of challenges going on in my life in a rather short period of time. My father said to me, “By the yard, life is hard. Inch by inch, life’s a cinch.” As simple as it sounds, that phrase absolutely changed my perspective. If you can only manage your life and your goals inch by inch right now, then do that. If you can manage your life by the yard, then do that. Either way, do something. To go back to my original conversation with my coworker, before long, I had her brainstorming the small exercises she could do while in her office (push-ups against the file cabinet) or in her car (hello glute and ab isometrics!). Whatever your goal, be it fitness, career, family and so forth; do consistent small things each day, each week, each month, each year. One day you will look behind you and be amazed at how far you’ve come.

New Year, New Me Mindset.

It’s officially 2019! If you’re reading this right now, think about all you have to be grateful for: eyes to see, education to read, knowledge to interpret, the gift of free time to do what you please (which happens to be reading this article, thank you!) and the blessing of seeing another year begin.

giving your recyclables to a homeless individual so they can get the money for them instead of you getting the money for yourself or simply cooking a meal for a needy friend every so often. Think of how much more we can do for those around us and even those around the world!

It’s not uncommon this time of year to hear people speak of New Year’s Resolutions and what way they want to “better themselves” in the New Year. Society has almost groomed us to believe we need to partake in coming up with a way to improve ourselves with the start of each New Year.

One thing I have felt called to do in my life is to help those in need in Africa. I don’t know why specifically there, but it’s been a calling I have had for most of my life. I’ve sponsored a child in Kenya, got involved with another organization that helps people in need in Africa, and since I specifically feel called to help those in Africa suffering from a lack of clean water, I recently decided to start a fundraiser through an organization to raise money to bless people in need in subSaharan Africa with fresh water.

My question is: why do we feel the need to start each New Year thinking about ourselves? Don’t we do enough of that already? Just think, on an average day we pick out an outfit for ourselves in the morning, eat meals throughout the day that we enjoy, partake in habits we created, work a job that we applied for and connect with friends that we chose. The last thing we need to do is to start each New Year by thinking of more ways to make life about us. I hope we can all see the beauty in helping others. It just so happens that when we lose ourselves in serving others, we actually find ourselves in the midst of it. The more we give, the more we receive! I believe the biggest misunderstanding that anyone can have is to believe their life is theirs to do whatever they please with. Living with that type of mindset can lead you into an egotistical lifestyle and it easily distracts you from what your calling really is, because we all are here for a purpose. I do believe we should be mindful of our habits, our lifestyles and ourselves, always bettering ourselves to make the world a better place. However, I believe we should get in a habit of thinking more of others and less of ourselves. This New Year, instead of thinking of how much weight you want to lose, how many countries you want to travel to, what job promotion you want to achieve or what you want others to think of you, try changing your mindset to think of how you can help others. Maybe your New Year’s Resolution can be to volunteer once a week at a local non-profit, donate all your unwanted clothes instead of throwing them in the garbage,

After plenty of research, the organization I started my fundraiser through is The Water Project. The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that unlocks human potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, which suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. My fundraising goal is $12,000, which if reached will fully fund a water project in a needy community in sub-Saharan Africa, allowing them to receive a fresh water well and learn proper sanitation skills. If I do not reach my fundraising goal, the organization will take all that I raised and put it towards helping as many people as possible in subSaharan Africa receive fresh water. I simply cannot imagine lacking access to clean water and it breaks my heart knowing that is a reality for some people. The Ronald McDonald House provides a comfortable and supportive environment for families who have a child undergoing treatment for a serious pediatric illness. It allows families to stay together during a medical crisis. Volunteers provide numerous services including preparing meals and snacks. The Ames students worked in four teams of three to bake brownies, cinnamon bread, cookies and cupcakes. Helping Hands advisers Alyssa Levine and

Nicole Reiss said there are limited volunteer opportunities for students under 16 years old, but the Ronald McDonald House’s Little Hands Helping Little Hands Baking Program is specifically designed for children and teenagers. “The students were seeing first-hand that there’s a need for their help,” Ms. Reiss said. “When you help other people, it’s more fulfilling than receiving anything for yourself.” After the student finished baking, they

received a tour of the facility and learned about the services offered. Student Lindsey Black said she had never been to the Ronald McDonald House before and was struck by the bright and colorful design with different themes for each room. She noted that there were many other volunteers there that day and it was uplifting to see so many people contributing to a good cause.

Helping others is the mission of the Helping Hands club at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, and ninthgraders recently learned how much joy their selﬂess acts can bring to others. A dozen students went to the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park on Nov. 13 to bake for the families there. “We made a small difference,” student Colin Mushorn said. “It’s going to change the world, eventually, with everyone doing their part.”

Brandon raised four puppies for the Guide Dog Foundation and is currently a volunteer at Good Samaritan Hospital. Next, all semiﬁnalists must complete a second phase of applications, which include essays, recommendations, and transcripts. An independent

selection committee will review the applications and select 250 regional ﬁnalists by the end of January to participate in online or in-person interviews. The winning scholars will be announced in March and invited to Atlanta in April for a celebratory banquet and attend Coca-Cola’s Leadership Development Institute. “To have two students chosen from the same high school is huge!” said Farmingdale High School Principal Dr. Samuel Thompson. “They took the initiative to apply, and we
