Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced that the Parks Department will begin to offer a night fishing parking permit to nonresidents, effective January 1, 2020. In order to obtain the permit, a non-resident must be sponsored by a current Town resident who has already obtained a night fishing permit. Supervisor Saladino stated, “As the popularity of night fishing on Long Island has continued to flourish, the Town’s will begin to offer a new, nonresident night fishing

parking permit. This parking pass, which must be displayed on dashboards while parking in Town lots where night fishing is permitted, will allow nonresidents to night fish at four different locations in the Town of Oyster Bay throughout the year.” Non-residents will be able to obtain a night fishing parking pass by submitting a $50 fee and being sponsored by a current Town resident who has obtained a night fishing permit. Each resident with a current night fishing permit will be able to sponsor one non-resident,

and will be held responsible for the non-resident’s decorum while using Town facilities. Permits are available through the Town’s Parks Department, located at 977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa. Night fishing hours are 7pm to 7am at select facilities. Night fishing is permitted at the following locations throughout the Town, during the following dates: • January 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020 • Harry Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing • Theodore Roosevelt

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay. The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for

three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the risk of coronary heart

disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be

especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Professional baker Danielle Chieffo of Massapequa has been appointed to the faculty of Nassau BOCES Barry Tech career and technical education high school as culinary instructor. Chef Chieffo will share her considerable industry and educational experience with the next generation of culinary professionals, both at Barry Tech and as an in-district teacher. Chef Chieffo, owner of Cutie Oodie Cakes custom bakery in Massapequa, has considerable industry experience under her toque. She was pastry chef at The Carltun, an elite dining destination on Long Island, and bakery assistant at Bare Naked Bakery in Bellmore. She has held key positions with the Whole Foods multinational supermarket chain as a shift leader, team leader and member of the bakery production team. Chef Chieffo is proud to be the first female chef to be named culinary instructor at Barry Tech. She is no stranger to the

DANIELLE CHIEFFO school’s culinary program, having served for the past three years as a teaching assistant. Now that she has a classroom of her own, she intends to continue and expand on the important work she has been doing. “What I love most about this program is that it’s all inclusive,” she said. “We teach all skill levels, confident in the knowledge that there is a job for everyone.” In addition to her work as a teaching assistant at Barry Tech, she has served as culinary instructor at the school’s annual Summer Camp, delivered

in conjunction with Hofstra University. She has taught baking and cake decorating in the adult education program at Sewanhaka High School, and has served as a baking coach, delivering baking classes in schools and libraries throughout Long Island. She holds degrees in food service management, baking and pastry art from Johnson & Wales University. “I’m doing what I love and sharing it with students who are as passionate about it as I am,” Chef Chieffo says of her position as culinary instructor. She is equally thrilled to be working in Barry Tech’s leading–edge kitchen facilities. “The home economics room I grew up with in high school doesn’t compare,” she observed. “Our students are learning in a real-world work setting with the equipment they will use in the industry. We are preparing them to do their very best, either in the workforce or in a college program.”

Throughout our local communities many people have heard of the YMCA of Long Island but don’t realize all that they do. From education to exercise, volunteerism to volleyball, preventative health to preschool, the Y doesn’t just strengthen bodies, but it also strengthens communities through programs. The YMCA of Long Island is truly a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. They welcome people of all ages, from all walks of life and from all backgrounds to join them in making communities stronger and making Long Island a better place to live, work and play! In 2019, the organization celebrated 100 Years of Transforming Lives and is excited to continue to do so in 2020 and beyond. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family

Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school in 11 school districts across the island, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The YMCA of Long Island offers so much and can make a large difference in your life or the life of others. Registration for their winter programs begins on January 19th.
