Donate To Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly’s Pet Food Drive

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) is pleased to again join Long Island Cares and help it “rain food for cats and dogs” by hosting a pet food drive now through the end of May. Legislator Donnelly’s district office is serving as a drop-off location for the 11th Legislative Pet Food Drive where much-needed pet food and supplies will be collected to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www.licares.org). In previous years, constituents of the 17th Legislative District have generously

donated to this annual drive. All donations go directly to Baxter’s Pantry. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets. The Spring Equinox The official beginning of spring is a highly anticipated day among people who can’t wait to put away their winter coats and soak up some warm sunlight, but the day of the spring equinox is just as worthy of celebration for its uniqueness as it is for its symbolic connection with the end of winter. the “vernal equinox” or the “March equinox,” the sun crosses the celestial equator going south to north. Equinoxes (there’s another one in September each year) are the only two times a year that the sun rises due east and sets due west for everyone on Earth. As the sun passes overhead on the equinox, the tilt of Earth is zero relative to the sun. That means that the planet’s axis

neither points toward or away from the sun. Though it’s understandable why so many people appreciate the spring equinox, which ushers in increasing sunlight hours and later sunsets, the day’s uniqueness makes it even more worthy of celebration. Traditional Irish music can enhance any St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Restaurants and pubs opening their doors for events during the month of March, and especially on March 17th, may want to coordinate seisiún at their establishments for extra ambiance and flair. Seisiún is the Gaelic word for “session.” It refers to a mostly informal “jam session” at which people play traditional Irish music. Seisiún generally are unrehearsed gatherings of musicians that happen mostly in pubs. Seisiún may seem as if musicians are part of bands, but this is not necessarily so. Music Director Earns Educator Of Note Award

The North Babylon Union Free School District is proud to announce that Director of Music and Arts Dr. Kim Löwenborg-Coyne received the Educator of Note Award from the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. North Babylon Board of Education members and administrators celebrated her achievement during the Feb. 17 board of education meeting. The Long Island Music Hall of Fame was created as a place of community that admires and explores Long Island music in all forms. It is dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. Along with Dr. Löwenborg-Coyne, the organization has inducted more than 100 musicians and music industry executives, including Billy Joel, Louis Armstrong, Tony Bennett, Run-D.M.C., and The Ramones. Dr. Löwenborg-Coyne started her teaching career in Rockville Centre schools and became the director of music and art programs

for North Babylon in 1996. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in music performance and a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Molloy College. She also completed her Masters of Arts in musicology at CW Post, Long Island University and earned her Ph.D. in higher level music education at New York University. She works diligently to acquire grant funds for the district to bring the best programs, cuttingedge technology, quality instruments and education to North Babylon schools. In addition, she consistently seeks to bring culturally diverse residency programs to the district, such as the African Dance residency with teachers from the Harlem School of the Arts, “Dance to Learn and Learn to Dance” with Ballet Long Island and a Steel Pan Orchestra Residency. Dr. Löwenborg-Coyne’s hard work was even more prominent during the pandemic as the district purchased supplies to provide home kits for

students and hosted drive by instrument distribution. Rather than cancelling concerts, Dr. LöwenborgCoyne worked with sound and film engineers to orchestrate drive-in movies that consisted of small, live performances. As a result, the district has seen outdoor theater, singalongs and painting sessions. In addition to her leadership, Dr. LöwenborgCoyne served on the founding committee for LIAA’s Long Island Scholar Artist Awards from 2007 to 2017 and chairs the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Arts in Education Advisory Board. She was also president of Suffolk NYSCAME from 2009 to 2010 and has hosted many NYSSMA Festivals and SCMEA events in her schools. The district is very proud of Dr. Löwenborg-Coyne’s accomplishment and applauds her dedication and tenacity to the North Babylon music and art program.

Town Of Babylon Officials Launch Drive To Support Ukraine

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilmen Terence McSweeney and DuWayne Gregory recently joined together with leadership and congregants at the Holy Family Ukrainian Church for a prayer service in support of the people of Ukraine. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly and Knights of Columbus Chancellor Patrick Corcoran were also in attendance. At the service, Supervisor Schaffer announced that the Town of Babylon has launched a drive to collect monetary donations that will go toward supporting

Ukrainian refugees who are fleeing the Russian invasion. The drive is being coordinated through the Industrial Development Agency with the goal of raising $25,000. “The Town of Babylon is home to one of the largest Ukrainian populations on Long Island, and we will do everything we can to stand with the people of Ukraine, and with our friends and neighbors here at home who still have family and friends over there,” said Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “The Babylon community always comes together in times of crisis and I know this will be no different,” added Supervisor Schaffer.

All proceeds collected through the drive will be donated to the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church in Lindenhurst, which will work to disseminate the funds through charitable organizations where refugees are resettling. Supervisor Schaffer and the Babylon Town Board hope to reach the $25,000 goal by early April. In person donations can be made directly to the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church at 225. The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams. YES Community Counseling Center has what they call a PACT (Partnering In Action and Change For Tomorrow) Initiative, which addresses our nation’s top substance abuse prevention priorities among persons aged 9-20 – underage drinking, marijuana, and opioid use. PACT seeks to understand patterns of youth and young adult underage drinking and substance use and implement targeted evidence based programs, policies, trainings, and education. Through community collaboration, they provide datadriven strategies and educational outreach to strengthen our communities’ prevention capacity to change the conditions by which youth and young adult substance use exists. PACT is comprised of ﬁve communities and school districts

(Farmingdale, Island Trees, Levittown, Massapequa and Plainedge) and collaborates with Farmingdale Alcohol Drug Abuse and Prevention Team (ADAPT), Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC), and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC). They also partner with the Long Island Prevention Resource Center (LIPRC), Nassau County Police Department, and New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force. Those entities work together to prevent the onset and progression of alcohol and substance use among youth and young adults aged 9-20. Prevention begins when communities’ health problems are understood within their environment; only then can YES CCC effectively plan and implement strategic action. The PACT Initiative uses the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to identify and select comprehensive, data-driven strategies to develop community solutions. The SPF is a 5-step planning process that guides the selection, implementation and evaluation of effective, culturally appropriate and sustainable prevention activities.
