For the past decade, North Babylon High School sophomore Emily Meyer has made it her mission to provide gifts to hospitalized children during the holidays. On Christmas night in 2009, Emily became sick and was admitted to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where she had her first encounter with the hospital’s Child Life Program. Through specially trained and certified child life specialists, the program helps children to learn about the hospital, as well
as provides therapeutic play and support for patients and their families. After receiving a large gift bag filled with toys from a Child Life representative in 2009, Emily was determined to provide that same experience to others. Every year since then, she asks for donations of new, unwrapped toys to be donated to Good Samaritan, as well as Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Stony Brook University Hospital, the John Theissen Foundation, Angela’s House and the Ronald McDonald House. Donations can be picked
up from any location by contacting Emily directly at em1810@yahoo.com. Emily has also partnered with the North Babylon Union Free School District, which has set up donation boxes in the main lobby of each school for students to donate new toys. “My goal this year is to match the 2,500+ toys collected and delivered last year and bring joy to the children that need it most,” Emily said. “Thank you so much for your help and Happy Holidays!”
Is It Safe To Donate Blood During The Pandemic? Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due
to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation center
than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

The Wyandanch Union Free School District’s social worker, Kelly Ureña, was honored at the Town of Babylon’s 22nd annual Hispanic Heritage Festival on Oct. 26. The virtual celebration, which was live streamed on the town’s Facebook page, highlighted three local Latino figures and acknowledged Ureña for her important contributions to the Hispanic community. During the celebration, Ureña attributed her love of community and her role with the Wyandanch School District to her parents who instilled in her at a young age the importance of being a helpful and kind neighbor. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Shaffer offered their congratulations and thanked Ureña for her ongoing, selfless service. Ureña has served Wyandanch schools since 2015. She is currently the social emotional learning specialist at Milton L. Olive Middle School. Prior to this role, she worked as the community site coordinator leading the family and
KELLY UREÑA community engagement office’s initiatives in the provision of adult classes to Wyandanch residents and served as the social worker for Lafrancis Hardiman Elementary School and Lafrancis Hardiman Annex. “The Wyandanch Union Free School District is so proud of Kelly and her contributions to our schools, and her accomplishments,” said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Gina Talbert. “Her dedication to our students, their families and the Wyandanch community has been instrumental in our district continuing to rise and build future leaders who can follow in her footsteps.”
Ureña created social emotional learning classrooms for the Milton L. Olive Middle School, where students engaged in various activities to help address SEL needs. She supported the Wyandanch community volunteering and coordinating volunteer efforts to provide interpretation services at the Wyandanch COVID-19 testing site alongside the Suffolk County Executive Office and the Town of Babylon. She also coordinated the Wyandanch School District’s community food distributions with donations from Island Harvest Food Bank. As a leader in her profession, Ureña offers professional development in her field and is known for her work in strengthening families, communities and building partnerships. She is a lead dialogue facilitator for Latina Moms Connect, serves on the board of The Long Island Latino Teachers Association, and sits as a trustee on her local school board. The district congratulates Ms. Ureña on this wonderful honor.
External Diploma Program The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based
program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure

Samantha is a member of the school’s varsity basketball and soccer teams and a New York State Scholar Athlete. “She displays outstanding character in school, on the field or court and especially in physical education class,” Mr. Friesen said. Anthony, a member of the varsity baseball, soccer and swimming teams, is also a New York State Scholar Athlete. He has also explored a passion for music as a member of the school’s concert, jazz and marching bands. “Anthony displays a positive attitude and enthusiasm in school, on the field or in the pool and in physical education class,” Mr. Friesen said. Additionally, both athletes regularly volunteer with various groups and organizations outside of school to help make a difference in their community.
