Adopt an Officer As part of the “Adopt A Police Officer” program, Suffolk County Police Officer Jeanne Osias visited with kindergarten students at South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon School District for the second time this year.

Officer Osias will be visiting once or twice a month throughout the school year to encourage positive police interactions and develop a trusting relationship. During this visit, Officer Osias talked about her job and then

For St. Paul’s Pantry This year has been moving fast and it’s that time of year for the Stacks Auto Food Drive. We work with North Babylon Lions Club and St. Paul’s Church to help the families in our community. We will be doing our food drive from October through December. Please drop off anything you can at 745 Deer Park Ave. in North Babylon. If everyone drops off just one can of food this will make a huge difference for families that are in need. Together we will be helping our community. Stacks will take one dollar from every oil change and donate it toward food for the St. Paul’s Pantry.

The Nativity was a joint effort of all four councils and NYS Parks Department officials. The Nativity was blessed during a brief ceremony by Fr. William Brisotti, Pastor of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish in Wyandanch on December 14th at 4:30pm. Fr. Brisotti blessed the Nativity with Holy Water, spoke about the meaning of the Nativity and led the Knights and Park Staff in a verse of “Silent Night.”

My Night Before Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

It’s been over ten years since we last celebrated Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house. Over 20 years of my life, from childhood onward, were spent around that grand dining room table, enjoying our traditional fare of spaghetti with garlic and oil, complemented by anchovies and walnuts for the adults, just plain tomato sauce for me. This was followed by massive piles of fried shrimp, filet of sole, fried mushrooms, all prefaced by a giant platter of antipasto of course. And then, there was dessert, that array of homemade cookies – baked lovingly by my grandma and grandpa. I’m not sure where the recipes originated from, or if they were my grandmother’s own personal spin on some old favorites, but they were delicious. I recall, somewhere during my college years,

becoming interested in the actual process that went into creating these tasty treats. I set up camp at my grandparents’ kitchen table, rolling dough, cutting it into tiny strips, twirling it into a cookie shape and – best of all – drizzling the icing on top. Yum. How I miss those traditions. Looking through some old photo albums recently, I came upon dozens of snapshots of these Christmas Eve gatherings, pre-dating even little old me in some cases. The decorations may have changed through the years, and even the cast of characters to some degree… but certain things remained a constant. The tree for instance. That big, beautiful Christmas tree which stretched to the cathedral ceiling, adorned by what seemed like hundreds of sparkly ornaments… surrounded by dozens of shiny presents, wrapped with

perfection by my grandfather. And always, at the end of the night, there would be that “one more” gift that would be brought up from the basement, usually the best of all. But above all that – the presents, the food, the frenzy to have everything run perfectly from beginning to end within a reasonable interval of time (seven hours or so, give or take) – were the memories made with those people, in that house. Priceless memories. When I grow up, I had always thought, I want every Christmas Eve to be exactly like this. Of course, when you’re a child, they don’t have the heart to tell you that things will never be quite the same, or that perfect, ever again. How grateful I am that it was though, even for a brief moment in time. Merry Christmas to all. May your Eve bring even a hint of that same magic.

Testing Their Minds In an effort to further study just how powerful the human mind can truly be, Babylon Junior-Senior High School students enrolled within Dr. Mark Malaszczyk’s recently reintroduced Advanced Placement Psychology course were treated to a special visit from certified hypnotherapist and Babylon JSHS parent, Eileen Berry. During the workshop, Mrs. Berry shared information pertaining

to hypnosis, saying that most clients utilize hypnotherapy in order to change negative behaviors and maximize skills. Such factors that a client might need help with are assistance with quitting smoking, weight management and stress management. “A common misconception of hypnosis is that a person will be able to be controlled entirely,” said Mrs. Berry. “However, this is not true, as the

Giving Thanks

Students in Saint Cyril and Methodius School’s 4th and 5th grades participated in an 8:30 a.m. Mass the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, gifting the community with their song, lecturing, reciting Native American poetry and more. They also collected pantry items so important

to families in need, especially at this time of year, when everyone wants to be able to celebrate the holidays as best they can, during a time when gratitude is so crucial to finding everyday happiness. The food items contributed by classrooms throughout the school will go to SSCM’s Parish

Outreach Program in Deer Park. Local parishes and their volunteers are the lifeblood of parish social ministry on Long Island, where across the county, combined parish ministries include thousands of volunteers and serve as many as 75,000 people in need each year.
