Joining the Fight West Babylon Senior High School joined the global community by recognizing and supporting World AIDS Day on November 30th. This year’s theme was “Access Equity Rights Now,” reminding students to continue to push forward and build a strong global movement in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Each year, a group of West Babylon High School students put together a performance to educate their peers and their community on HIV/AIDS, how to prevent it, and how to show compassion to those living with the virus. Students took to the auditorium stage for choreographed dance performances, informative
skits, inspirational songs and poems and video presentations. With more than 34 million people around the world affected by the disease, World AIDS Day is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, support those living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died.

For St. Paul’s Pantry This year has been moving fast and it’s that time of year for the Stacks Auto Food Drive. We work with North Babylon Lions Club and St. Paul’s Church to help the families in our community. We will be doing our food drive from October through December. Please drop off anything you can at 745 Deer Park Ave. in North Babylon. If everyone drops off just one can of food this will make a huge difference for families that are in need. Together we will be helping our community. Stacks will take one dollar from every oil change and donate it toward food for the St. Paul’s Pantry.

As I grew older, there were the latest Barbie dolls, electronic gadgets and toys to be had – the “fun” stuff. I remember that tinge of disappointment when I would spy shirt boxes wrapped under the tree, knowing it likely meant clothing. Yawn. How funny the way our perceptions change as we age.

Then came the gift card phase, those years of wanting to head out on my own post-holiday shopping spree in lieu of putting any real thought into a Christmas wish list. And so it remains, for the most part, to this day. Aside from a few token “musthave” toy crazes that erupt each holiday season, even the children of today seem perfectly content to collect money and gift cards from their relatives and either squirrel it away or splurge on
tree on Christmas morning. And so, too, is some of the innocence, the childish delight. How nice it would be to recapture an element of that, especially in this day and age. This Christmas, perhaps the focus should be not on what’s under the tree, but rather those around it… the true reason for the season, after all. This year, there is nothing in particular I want, other than to spend it with my loved ones and cherish the moments and the memories to be made. That’s my list, short and sweet.

As Goldilocks’ lawyers and the prosecution went toe-to-toe trying to prove their respective clients’ cases, other fairy tale characters were called
to testify as witnesses including the Big Bad Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood, the Gingerbread Man, the Three Blind Mice, Chicken Little and more. After hearing all the facts in the case, the jury of peers had the opportunity to hand down a verdict and sentencing for Goldilocks.

In honor of Computer Science Week from Dec. 5-11, students at Forest Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District participated in a Hour of Code during library classes from November 28th through December 9th. The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180-plus countries. The Hour of Code, now in its third year, takes place in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper. Forest Avenue students were taught basic coding skills, played games using code and learned that anybody can code.

HOLIDAY SINGALONG - As part of a longstanding tradition spanning approximately 25 years, students from the North Babylon School District performed a holiday singalong at the Belmont Lake State Park Holiday Tree Lighting. The group was comprised of approximately 400 fourth- and fifth-graders across the district, and members of the board of education also attended the lighting. Literacy Techniques Babylon Elementary School was recently selected to host a collaborative workshop for six educators from the Tuckahoe Common School District and share information about the district’s robust teaching techniques and approaches to literacy instruction. “Learning is a lifelong process,” said Babylon Elementary School Principal Travis Davey. “This collaborative meeting afforded our staff
the chance to collaborate with colleagues, offer perspectives and ideas, as well as spark a deeper conversation about the ways in which students learn.” Throughout the workshop, Babylon teachers modeled classroom lessons, met with the Tuckahoe representatives and shared information about how the district is working to strengthen literacy instruction at the
kindergarten through second-grade level. “Babylon is very enthused to share our instructional successes with other school districts,” said Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “Hosting such visitations is a testament to the authenticity of the workshop model and to our staff’s commitment of delivering a well-rounded literacy experience to all children.”
