On Sunday, November 12, 2023, a coalition of Jr. Fire departments gathered for the 1st ever Town of Babylon Jr. Fire dept. drill exercise that focused on auto extrication using the “Jaws of Life” and other life-saving 1st responder equipment. What better ways to celebrate the diversity, uniqueness and creativity of independent, local businesses than by supporting them during the busiest shopping season of the year? Plaid Friday was conceptualized in Oakland, Calif., several years ago in an effort to encourage holiday shoppers to slow down and shop locally at small businesses rather than partake in the frenzy of the traditional Black Friday rush at big box retailers. Similarly, Small Business Saturday® was founded by American Express in 2010 as a communitycentric day to support local businesses. Small Business Saturday was the catalyst for the generalized Shop Small® movement, which encourages consumers to patronize small businesses.

Local businesses are at the heart of their communities. In a 2015 survey by the Urban and Land Institute, researchers found that more than half of respondents said they wanted a neighborhood where they wouldn’t need a car very often. More than 40 percent specifically noted the desirability of local shopping and entertaining as main features. A neighborhood with a Main Street or thriving local shopping hub can be a big draw. Consumers make these neighborhoods a reality. Every time they grab a coffee from a local café, purchase a piece of artwork from a neighborhood artist or dine at a family-run restaurant, shoppers are supporting local business owners and strengthening their communities. Here are some ways to make shopping small a priority this holiday

season. • Take inventory of Plaid Friday and Small Business Saturday sales by keeping up on local social media. Build holiday shopping lists around the offerings at local businesses. • Dine out at local restaurants or shop smaller food merchants. • Visit a local tree farm. When decorating for the holidays, support the farm or local nursery that grows Christmas trees and makes their own wreaths and garlands. • Keep your money in your community at a local bank or credit union rather than a large national bank. Local banks may have special promotions to boost savings for holiday gifting. The holiday season is the perfect time to support small, local businesses.

Mr. Sesto said, “ It’s been an ongoing project of mine to get more recognition for the volunteer fire service, specifically the junior firefighter program. And through the help of all the advisors and all the fire departments within the

Town of Babylon, we finally, after years of work and planning, were finally able to get it all together and hold our first ever Town of Babylon Junior firefighter drill.” Councilman Terence McSweeney who is also a member of the FDNY and a volunteer with the North Babylon Fire Company, partnered with Sesto on

this vision. McSweeney said, “This was all possible because of the vision of Cirino Sesto. He had a vision and made it come to life here today.” McSweeney said the driving force behind this drill is to engage the kids and provide a handson approach for them in hopes they decide to join the department when they turn of age.

Boy Scout Troop 399 Annual Walk For Wellness

Boy Scout Troop 399 recently volunteered at the Annual Walk for Wellness at Belmont Lake State Park sponsored by the Family Service League. Domenico, Max, Nate, Quinn, Stanley, Ryan, Kadyn, Christopher and Owen, along with adult Scout Leaders and volunteers, distributed water and t-shirts and served in other capacities,

contributing to the event’s success. Boy Scout Troop 399 is a Boy Scout Troop based in North Babylon, NY, and a member of the Sagtikos District of the Boy Scouts of America’s Suffolk County Council. Troop 399 is sponsored by the North Babylon Lions Club. Originally chartered in 1975, Troop 399 has

NFPA Urges Extra Caution When Preparing Your Thanksgiving Feast The National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) urges added caution when cooking on Thanksgiving Day, by far the leading day of the year for home cooking fires. In 2021, an estimated 1,160 home cooking fires were reported to U.S fire departments on Thanksgiving Day, reflecting a 297 percent increase over the daily average. “Thanksgiving is a hectic holiday with multiple dishes cooking and baking at the same time, along with lots of guests, entertaining, and

other distractions that can make it easy to lose sight of what’s on the stove or in the oven,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA. “With all these factors at play, it’s not surprising that the number of cooking fires spikes so dramatically.” Overall, cooking is the leading cause of U.S. home fires and injuries, and the second-leading cause of home fire deaths. Unattended cooking is the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire

deaths. “Keeping a close eye on what’s cooking and minimizing the likelihood of getting distracted are key steps people can take to ensure a festive, fire-free holiday,” said Carli. Following are additional tips and recommendations from NFPA to help cook safely on Thanksgiving: Never leave the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop. Some types of cooking, especially those that involve frying or sautéing with oil, need continuous

attention. When cooking a turkey, remain at home and check it regularly. Make use of timers to keep track of cooking times, particularly for foods that require longer cook times. Keep things that can catch fire like oven mitts, wooden utensils, food wrappers, and towels at least three feet away from the cooking area. Avoid long sleeves and hanging fabrics that can come in contact with a heat source. Always cook with a lid

beside your pan. If a small grease fire starts, smother the flames by sliding the lid over the pan, then turn off the burner. Do not remove the cover because the fire could start again. Let the pan cool for a long time. For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. Only open the door once you’re confident the fire is completely out, standing to the side as you do. If you have any doubts or concerns, contact the fire department for assistance. Keep children and pets at

least three feet away from the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried. Hot foods and liquids should be placed away from table and counter edges. In addition, NFPA strongly discourages the use of turkey fryers that use cooking oil, which can cause devastating burns. For a safe alternative, NFPA recommends purchasing a fried turkey from a grocery store or restaurant or buying a fryer that does not use oil.
